- President Trump marked the D-Day anniversary by reading an excerpt from a prayer President Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered to the nation by radio on the evening of June 6, 1944, in which he spoke to the country for the first time about the Normandy operation.
My grandfather survived D-Day. He made it to Germany and back. He was in Easy Red sector

Yesterday I saw a WW2 vet entering a supermarket with the help of another gentleman. To see a man so frail and weak from age, only to know that he was once young, vibrant and brave to serve his country.
While I watched him walk, I nodded to him, thanked him for his service and said a prayer. Never take these brave men for granted. That generation, both men and women were truly the greatest generation.
I’m blessed my grandparents that raised me are still alive my pop who served is 94 there’s something about having people that served an lived this an their words an their experience being so much more profound an honest then any accounts I see others have, so many comments of oh no I heard this I read that.. just a shame but history does repeat because division always comes an we are not the same America we were not even close this time around I do not see unity anywhere

My dad was one the the greatest generation and joined the army in April 1942. He's been gone a long time, but I think about him often, served in the 3547 Truck Battalion and served in North Africa, Italy and Germany. He was not a D-Day hero but will always be a hero in my book!

Trying to recite a speech by FDR is a risky endeavor. We know how FDR spoke - and there is a recording of this radio address, given as Americans woke to learn that the Allied liberation of Europe had begun. Even Morgan Freeman would sound "wrong" doing this speech.
If it were my choice - which it wasn't - I would've just played FDR's speech. Reading the words of a brilliant orator - say, Winston Churchill - isn't necessary when you have film or audio of them presenting it.

@@STEVE8OS Not sure I follow. We didn't follow that the US was secular during the time that prayer was written/read - hence the 1962 Engel v. Vitale decision. And obviously we still are not following it, if politicians continually to pray in public - endorsing a religion.
