You don't add water...you only empty the water that's pulled out of the air in your house while the A/C is on. It usually fills up over a period of a few days, depending on how much humidity is in the air.
how often do you need to drain it? Can I leave mine at home all day on and it won't explode if I am not draining it? Or should I open the drain during the day and leave something for it to drain into just in case?

fnmass562 I still drain mine once a week. The more humid, it is the more water. I usually only drain about 3 oz. or less.
