Having position players come in to pitch an inning is a great way to keep the morale up and fun-level high in what would be an otherwise demoralizing defeat. I love when this happens!
It’s mostly to save the bullpen. Pitchers only get so many pitches a week and they’re the most expensive players on the team. No sense wasting their arms or risk them getting hurt over a pointless game.
David Ross did it twice with the Cubs. both of them scoreless innings. one game against the Phillies, he hit a home run as a pitcher in the bottom of the 9th.
Keep in mind, ALL these games were way out of reach, and in late innings. So, it was essentially batting practice and going through the motions. Both teams just wanted to get the game over with.
WERE that bad... they did make the playoffs. And actually there was talk last fall about turning him into a relief pitcher but no talk of that so far this year.
Naw, we didn't want to use anyone out of the bullpen in blowouts, so we just sent Gimenez out there to get some outs. (At least he was effective at it unlike some pitchers I know...)
Who were those 2 guys, the first one with Seattle and the one with Philadelphia? It always AMAZES me how well some of these guys do? Yeah sure you're bound to have the half hour, can't get nobody out 9 run innings but some of these guys. Jose Reyes go in and pitch and he'll get like 2 strike outs and a ground ball in 8 pitches. There isn't a hole big enough to crawl into if you get struck out by a guy that never pitched in his life lol
Is there any particular reason for this? I see generally it's done by a team losing by a sizable margin in the 8th or 9th inning. Just don't want to waste a closer?
Ok, so... in Football (Soccer) when a player has to replace a goalkeeper is because there are no more changes and the goalkeeper had a red card or is injured or something like that... In baseball why would a player cover a pitcher? Honest cuestion, I'm curious because teams had a lot of pitchers so, I don't know if there is a limit on changes, Why use another position player? I'm lerning the rules :)
Considering the way the Royals’ bullpen is pitching, my team may be rolling out Salvador Perez on the mound. Can’t be any worse than what we’ve got already.
It's funny how basically everyone makes contact, but usually pops it up for a fly ball. It's like they aren't used to pitches that easy and try too hard.
They throw in position players to pitch whenever the opposing side is winning by a high margin. Hence all the games here being very lopsided scoring like 16 - 3. It's basically just to have some fun.
Lol it’s funny how it’s always when a team is getting creamed. It’s almost like telling the pitchers “You guys suck today so position players are gonna throw today”.
If I was in that situation with a player pitching that slow I'd get a heavier bat to help my timing because obviously a heavier bat will give you slower bat speed, but it would be a good time to do it because you dont want to be swinging the bat too early. another thing that would be possible is just not warm up with the bat weight.

MisterAshtonFTW I thought it would be the opposite but I get what you mean.
Same

Might as well have some fun when it’s a guaranteed loss
David Ross did it twice with the Cubs. both of them scoreless innings. one game against the Phillies, he hit a home run as a pitcher in the bottom of the 9th.
Cubsfan122112 this is *2017*
But did he do that in 2017?
that guy that loves MEMES this is *2018*
It's Brandon Mora lol
It's Brandon Mora lol
Keep in mind, ALL these games were way out of reach, and in late innings. So, it was essentially batting practice and going through the motions. Both teams just wanted to get the game over with.
Morland throws gas🔥🔥
Sox need bullpen help right now. This might be the guy.
When Mitch Moreland is T-1st for best ERA in MLB history
Gennett the only dude to hit 4 hr and pitch in same season(b4 babe)
No he is the first player ever to have 4 hrs and 4 Grand slams and not to mention he pitched in the same year and Ruth never hit 4 hrs in one game
minette wong
JD Martinez had a 4 HR game
Shining
Shoei
Mousey TR I know this is late but I’m a yankee fan saying JD Martinez is insane
y’all forgot nori aoki
It wasn't a strike but Chooch's 2 seamer still had some dang good movement
What about chris Davis for the O's pitching against the red Sox in the 28 inning game a few years back?
Where is Nori Aoki Pitching? He pitched in 2017...
i was at that game and was waiting for the footage the whole time
ROmine pitched twice last year for the tig's. i miss him. great defensive player.
No one is going to talk about Leonys Martin hitting 91 and making it look effortless?
What about that jays game where goins AND Barney pitched?
1:36
19 runs
25 hits
8 errors
14 men left on base
Holy.
Shit.
0:47 a position player pitching to a reliever is quite a rarity
Yep but did anyone see mlb put nori aoki pitching for the stros in there?
At 3:06 they are only down by 5. Did they really give up?
You guys forgot Daniel Discalso
Connor Greenwall Noooo he's the reason I'm watching this.
Where is Daniel Descalso? He is the best positon player-pitcher!!
Is Chris Gimenez turning into a pitcher
Brody Hinz No the twins are just that bad
WERE that bad... they did make the playoffs. And actually there was talk last fall about turning him into a relief pitcher but no talk of that so far this year.
He's signed with the Cubs, whose pitching staff is significantly deeper than Minnesota's. So not so likely this year.
Becca S they made the wild card game and lost
Naw, we didn't want to use anyone out of the bullpen in blowouts, so we just sent Gimenez out there to get some outs. (At least he was effective at it unlike some pitchers I know...)
How fast does Moreland throw?
I was at the game when Jon jay pitched
Twins used Gimenez way too much.
Kimberly Olson forget infield, he should be go pitcher next season
Marshall might as well. Bullpen sucks most of the time. Our ‘star’ pitcher can’t seem to do shit anymore.
Well twins are shit and get blown out a lot so why waste a good relief pitcher
Kimberly Olson on the cubs now, so I doubt it
A lot of these guys are throwing like 85 90 with no technique, with a little teaching and practice they could probably throw straight fire
Wow. Some of them looked pretty good!
Where is descalso
What about Nori Aoki?
Who were those 2 guys, the first one with Seattle and the one with Philadelphia? It always AMAZES me how well some of these guys do? Yeah sure you're bound to have the half hour, can't get nobody out 9 run innings but some of these guys. Jose Reyes go in and pitch and he'll get like 2 strike outs and a ground ball in 8 pitches. Wasn't it last season the guy from Detroit played all 9 positions?
Yes
Where was Chris Davis?
You forgot about Mitch Moreland for the red sox
no
7:07 look at the kid in the third row
Haha go Moreland
He looked pretty good on the mound, wicked lefty stuff, lol.
he hit 92!? we need him out of the pen
ya
He did pitch 25 games in college with a 3.27 ERA, and a 12.27 K/9 rate.
I was at that game, I was laughing so hard at the fact that he did better than Porcello.
I deadass thought that was bautista. 2:46
Scooter Gennett actually looked like a real pitcher it looked pretty good actually
I love to think that MLB players struggle to hit a 60 mph fastball while us kids can easily hit 60 mph
Is there any particular reason for this? I see generally it's done by a team losing by a sizable margin in the 8th or 9th inning. Just don't want to waste a closer?
SRMkay yeah, and to have some fun. Gives guys like Moreland that used to pitch a chance to do it again for poops and giggles
What about Chris Davis?
It could be interesting if 1 of 162 games is the "positional player pitcher" and in this game each positional player pitches for one inning
Moreland actually was a stud college pitcher
i want to se manny machado pitch
best position player pitcher I ever saw was drew butera the catcher. that dude hit like 95+ a few times
Ok, so... in Football (Soccer) when a player has to replace a goalkeeper is because there are no more changes and the goalkeeper had a red card or is injured or something like that... In baseball why would a player cover a pitcher? Honest cuestion, I'm curious because teams had a lot of pitchers so, I don't know if there is a limit on changes, Why use another position player? I'm lerning the rules :)
what is Minnesota doing they need to find some pitchers
Daniel Descalso?
Mitch Moreland hits 92 as a lefty pitching for the first time in ages. Why doesn't he just pitch lmao.
Johnster2657 cause throwing gas as a position player doesn’t make you a pitcher. Example: Christian Benthancourt
did anyone have to watch the add 3 times like i did? it was really weird
Well when you're down big time, you remember you need pitchers for tomorrows game.
Gincarlo was trying to kill that ball
the best feeling is how they're getting crushed but they don't care in the slightest
Considering the way the Royals’ bullpen is pitching, my team may be rolling out Salvador Perez on the mound. Can’t be any worse than what we’ve got already.
Gennet should pitch for real with that funky delivery
This is a classic! 😂
You know when a position player throws a 1-2-3 inning your bullpen is absolute trash
Not only Delscalso is missing, but Nori Aoki is missing as well.
What about Romine when he played all 9?
0:20 he threw 47mph thats like the slowest pitch in mlb
ur mom ur mom I’m pretty sure the pitch at 5:01 was slower
ur mom ur mom I play little league and still hit faster pitches
OKC Films woah...we got a badass over here. 🙄
0:23 he’s mad
They only do this if they're losing big-time so it doesn't matter cuz they're probably going to lose
My Enchanted Diamond Apple yeah that’s kind of the point
Or very deep in extra innings. See Chris Davis pitching 2 scoreless innings for the win a couple of years back.
Yeah, Im pretty sure they do that so they do not rack up pitch count for the actual pitching staff on an unwinnable game.
It’s usually that or they ran out of pitchers in the bullpen
It was at 5 minutes, I realized how my fastball would of played out.
Damn Moreland out here throwing 92
1:15
GIVE ME THOSE ORIOLES JERSEYS
Pitchers in the minor league are hella mad after watching this
Is anyone really that surprised? Outfielders got mad strong arms. Third basemen too. Im betting most decent position player can hit 90.
Has there ever been an instance where the team came back to win and the position player ended up with the win?
Mitch Moreland out here throwing 92 lol
Pretty sure Kris Davis pitched 2017
It's funny how basically everyone makes contact, but usually pops it up for a fly ball. It's like they aren't used to pitches that easy and try too hard.
Uh did anyone else see how Vimeo could become like a pitcher for the Mainiacks
Mitch Moreland Threw God Dang Fast
0:10 who is heyward signaling to step off the play?😂
Funny thing is you can tell who knows how to pitch compared to those who don’t
Moreland was hands down the best in the video
They throw in position players to pitch whenever the opposing side is winning by a high margin. Hence all the games here being very lopsided scoring like 16 - 3. It's basically just to have some fun.
Add Sandoval to the 2018 list
Basically when the team is losing so badly and they put in someone else to pitch late.
Moreland has a good fastball
so mad riz isn’t on this
Notice how almost every game they were down by like 10
as a 13 year old some these are meatballs
vonnie boi Most of them pitched in college or minor leagues so shut up
vonnie boi you try pitching and see how hard it is
You know it’s a dumpster fire when the Marlins put up 22 runs.
So pitchers are unnecessary?
Daniel Descalso. Hasn’t allowed a run yet.
Well 47 mile per hour pitch
Ive played a 12u team that their best pitcher throws 81mph which is faster than some of these guys
Lol it’s funny how it’s always when a team is getting creamed. It’s almost like telling the pitchers “You guys suck today so position players are gonna throw today”.
Now i get why the Sox resigned Moreland... if they use him for added bullpen depth in legit situations
Where is Shohei Ohtani
Jose Reyes is the best pitcher
Jesus Christ the twins had Chris gimenez pitch a ton
WHERE IS DANIEL DESCALSO!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
You forgot Nori Aoki
The first three teams are being demolished
Scooter Genett though
The majority of the batters have more difficulty hitting 65 MPH then 95
paul jones to me i think that that proves the most important part of hitting is your timing
I'm Awful yes i believe timing and ability to lay off pitches that are un hitable,
If I was in that situation with a player pitching that slow I'd get a heavier bat to help my timing because obviously a heavier bat will give you slower bat speed, but it would be a good time to do it because you dont want to be swinging the bat too early. another thing that would be possible is just not warm up with the bat weight.
Lol scoter stepped to the side and threw sidearm
Turns out they should have put them in sooner
DREW BUTERA
