You’re welcome. Oddly, I grew up within a few miles of Cranston and we went to rival High Schools...he’s a year older. But I think I have a few inches and about 50lbs on him. 😊
Thank you very much for your tips, suggestions... I'm a BFA student... and this time I really need to understand everything about digital painting... and you really saved me.. thanks ❤️❤️
These videos are a great resource for people who have been painting for years and just need some tips to make life easier and the process a little quicker :)
thanks i have only t=got back to digital designing after ten years not doing any of it and so many programs now compared to before you don`t know where to begin
James....while trying to find a good posterize app for a new Air.....found out the Word version 16.36 has built in posterize capacity. Great app and came with the new beast. Thanks for this and on to experimenting and learning!
Hey James! Great video. The "median" trick is a lifesaver. Was wondering though, how do you go about re-inserting the hue on top of the b+w posterized image? I could easily just duplicate the original image and set it to color mode, but that wouldn't follow the posterized image very cleanly. Any tips would be much appreciated!
Hello, excellent vid and explanation/suggestions! I had heard of this before but didn’t really understand how to do it well so thank you! I was wondering, have you heard of the app Procreate for the iPad? Do you or have you heard of any ways to create this effect on the app? I’ve been looking and doing research on this but I can’t find any just for B&W images
Thanks Sophie! I don’t have a stylus-capable iPad (and I’m still using a Cintiq screen with my desktop Mac) so I have no experience with Procreate, sorry.
@@JamesCrandallPainting it’s ok no problem! I’m sort of figuring it out on the iPad but it’s taking a bit though. It’s a good thing I still have photoshop on my laptop!
My Japanese artist friend tells me that this word is never used in this context in Japan, and that it is misappropriation as used among arty English speakers. I went to Art college in the 1970-1980s (along with several Japanese students) and never heard this word until perhaps the 2000s. That’s why I suggest this usage is a modern invention.
Hello im designing a shirt but dont know how to edit efficently but i made one and its straight posterize then threshold is that applicable? for screen printing?
Somehow I got throughout several years of art education and some 20 years as a professional illustrator without hearing the word. It’s just “graphic design” in English, no cultural appropriation is required.
Loved you in Breaking Bad. Thanks for the tips.

I'm learning vexel art and this is very helpful especially when shading the subject. Can now easily spot dark and the lightest spots from the image.

Thanks Zane! I think you’re already figured out everything I know about that.
Can this be done on a tablet?
Yes, try “NotanIzer”

Notan has a history beyond being a “hipster term.” Nōtan is a Japanese term that means ‘light and dark harmony/balance.’
My Japanese artist friend tells me that this word is never used in this context in Japan, and that it is misappropriation as used among arty English speakers.

I’m sorry...I’d just be guessing about preparing separations for silk screens, you’d better off asking someone else.
@@JamesCrandallPainting thanks!
How do turn this into a sketch?
Maybe print it out and put it under a sheet of tracing paper ua-cam.com/video/s17OttwtGFE/v-deo.html
I’m having trouble posterizing a black person. Any ideas
Unless the photo is badly underexposed, there will be value changes there. Try adjusting the photo brighter before the posterizing step.
You don't go over gimp well and wish you would have shown the top pulldown menu steps.
Okey dokey
hipster term for two values... LOL! Lets try, Japanese term for meaning, the design of light and dark shapes against each other.
Somehow I got throughout several years of art education and some 20 years as a professional illustrator without hearing the word. It’s just “graphic design” in English, no cultural appropriation is required.
This video felt longer than it really is
free ...... not photoshop ???
I don’t understand your comment.
@@JamesCrandallPainting I think he means, is there a free alternative other then photoshop?
I would suggest GIMP as a no-cost alternative, although the steps would be somewhat different
