Enjoyed this, I've never seen a "cartridge" review before! You enunciate with your hands which makes it hard to actually see the carts (like at 8:28) 😂 if u could shoot still closeup footage so we can take in the info would help loads. Can't believe you licked the card so we don't have to! Cheers for the vid 🙂
The transparent GBC cartridges are my favourite for sure, such an iconic design. I'm glad you came to your senses and put them in the S Tier where they belong! And Megadrive is my favourite home console cartridge but it could just be nostalgia talking
just saw your post regarding slow progress on viewership etc. I love your videos and the quality, stuff like this will prevail, I am sure of it. Keep going! I, for one, very much enjoy your videos. Greetings from Germany, hope my english is good enough to convey my message :D
I would put the NES cart in E because it and it’s host are just full of air! Master system in C because although it has a label problem the cartridges are durable and stackable and Famicom A because they are very interesting! I do like that you put the mighty Mega Drive right at the top where it most certainly belongs 😀👍
I lost a copy of Phoenix Wright on the DS which got eaten and swallowed by a relative's chihuahua. Probably wouldn't have happened if it was the GBA version.
For me personally, I'd give Game Boy Color the top spot. It's compact, it looks cool because it's clear, enough space for artwork, durable, and you can easily disassemble and clean it with one screw removed.
Never heard of the taste test. Hilarious! Great video. Made my day. You may need to do a part 2 for any other cartridges you missed. For example what do the Evercade cartridges taste like? 😂
When in a console Atari 2600 cartridges actually have the artwork facing away from you so you would just see the label at the top and black plastic on the front. Also similar to the Famicom, every 3rd party developer has their own cartridge and also box design
I'd say Gen has the best cart. Not too big, not too small. Stacks well. Sturdy. Label on the spine. N64 might take the cake, but there's no end label. NES and SNES are #2 and #3. SNES doesn't stack as well as the Gen. Handheld carts suffer from lack of end label, but Gameboy carts are very stackable so I like that.
The C rating for Famicom hurt me deep inside 😂 I love them, and love the personality and variety.. the taller carts usually had a reason to be tall though, they often had larger boards with special chips and such… NES carts were huge for no reason, the board inside was usually way smaller. Anyway, I may be biased as I originally grew up in Eastern Europe where we were accustomed to Famiclone carts, so I collect Famicom far more than NES as a result.. That said, I’d put Konami Famicom carts into S rank cuz of the top label, and normal ones into A. Some Famicom carts were somewhat ugly tho, the weirder shape ones
I mostly agree with the rest of ur rankings.. I do think pal/jp SNES carts are more attractive to look at, but it is annoying that you can’t stack them or see the title on side label..
Also, u forgot vita 😢 switch and vita carts I’d prob give a B tho.. they’re nice and compact and the label art is cool enough usually.. Unless it’s a Pegi cart with those logos slapped all over it 😅
My favorite (but i'm biased like crazy) because the Game Boy was my 1st gaming system ever. So the Game Boy Cartridge is in my opinion the best ever! & the fact they all came with a cartridge case for them to keep clean was a epic choice! NES Cartridge is second because they made the NES wrong! You would think by making the console not able to put in a cartridge correctly the cartridge would break! But they have stood the test of time & NES Cartridge keeps on working! Thanks for the Retro Break & Good Bye!
I love the idea behind this video, and you did a great job with the list! One (fairly mainstream) cart you missed was the Sony Vita. I suspect you would rate it similarly to the Switch because of their similarities in design and smallness, but it might go just a smidgen higher because they're a little more solid and don't have any rattle.
lynx is my fave cart, just love em. i have 5 bright red "burnable" blank ones, but ive been side tracked, never put anything on them, i was planning a lynx game. still just seeing them excites me, i have a writer too from benn venn.
Adding a pair of carts myself: Neo Geo MVS cart: D: Feels like chunky electronic equipment for a vehicle, not elegant but pretty cool in itself. No art only text. Evercade cart: E: Designed to blend seamlessly into the first version of the Evercade handheld. Looks pretty dull on it´s own. I´d give Famicom carts an A or S, the colourful diversity makes them so fun to look at. Like walking into a candy store!
Top video! Now I know never to lick my Switch games, haha. The grey Game Boy carts can discolour easily, so I would rate them one level lower than GBC. As for WonderSwan, I agree about the exposed pins but I like how the carts fit snuggly into the system with the full label visible. They're like a missing jigsaw piece that completes the shape of the device.
The Atari Jaguar cartridges are a bit different to most with a molded round bar at the top to grip when pulling the cartridge out. I'm sure they were terrible for stacking, but they were satisfying to use (unlike the Jaguar controller!).
Probably due to nostalgia and personal bias but I really like the 3ds and ds carts, something about the size and fitting them all into like a case really satisfies me (I>E those game cart holders you find in ds cases)
Even though I love the console, I actually really don’t like the GBA shells shape. If they are loose, you can neither stack them nor put them next to each to flip through your carts. But I do love the size of them and how they do a little click when you insert them into the system.
PCE would probably be S tier for me just due to how far ahead of its time it was technically. Considering that it was released in the mid-late 80s (NES era) and is so ridiculously flat. Just comparing it to a famicom pcb or even a fds diskette it's impressively small.
I'm surprised you own many different cartridges but none for the Neo Geo AES. Was waiting for you to talk about it during the video xD Any particular reason you never got anything there?
To me it's so odd that you lament that you cannot stack the Game Gear cartridges when $1 cases on Aliexpress are available, yet overlook how neatly they fit into the console's design when inserted.
Western NES on S tier is absurd, I loathe that cheap looking gray brick. The rest of S tier is spot on, GBA, GB, N64 and Mega Drive are peak cartridge design.
@@RetroBreak That's what we called them in the 80's and 90's, nez and snez. And the Americans were all haha you mean the N-E-S and Super Nintendo. And we were all, no it's pronounced nez and snez. Check out contemporary UK TV shows like Gamesmaster and Bad Influence! and whatever the one on sky was called for reference if you don't believe me.
@RetroBreak Here is an example of Violet (who was also a character in the Micro Machines game) saying "nez" and "snez" around the 10 min 55 seconds mark ua-cam.com/video/2Fjz8tP9z1M/v-deo.html probably around the year 1992 ish. This was Bad Influence! on ITV. Games World was the name of the show on Sky and had one of the Little Britain actors (not the baldy one) in an early role. Gamesmaster was on Channel 4 I think and one of the seasons was hosted by one of the actors in Lock Stock. They should be mostly on UA-cam but I guess you know most of this already.
N64 is soooo not S tier lol. no top label, slippery rounded cart, label stickers are very thin and cheap. cmon man, all you did was fanboy all nintendo carts to to the top.
The kids managed to lose all their Switch games in one go 🙄 stupid little poor excuse for cartridges. Nintendo really dropped the ball with their design 👎🏼

I really like the PC Engine cartridge. It looks like something that would actually be used in a modern console today
fun video idea!

Never really thought about this before, lol, but I am partial to a Game boy cart….cool vid! 😊
Fun detail about the DS cards: They fit pretty much exactly in a tic tac box which make for great travel storage.
Also, Playstation Vita is missing.

PCE would be easy S tier if the rom size wasnt so restricted by its small physical sizing for the era
Street Fighter 2 showed that could do bigger rom size, but I guess it was easier and cheaper to just make CD games after that
N64 should have had a top label and the labels wear pretty easily.
The C rating for Famicom hurt me deep inside 😂

No sega master system cards or ps vita cartridges?
I was going to say the same about the Ms cards! Maybe they are too similar to the PC Engines cards.
Maybe I just forgot! Oops! 😅

started off STRONG with the PC Engine!!
and I actually prefer the American SNES cartridges more too.
Now you can also make a video where you rank the boxes in which the games are. :)
Lmao , glad i stayed till the end to witness the taste test

Don’t have one. Never been interested in fighting games so it’s not a priority. I know there’s other genres too so I do want to get one eventually!
Where would you rank unlicensed cartridges like the Tengen NES carts?
Bomberman 64 though 💙
To me it's so odd that you lament that you cannot stack the Game Gear cartridges when $1 cases on Aliexpress are available, yet overlook how neatly they fit into the console's design when inserted.
"And it lingers!!!" 😂
🤢
is bitter!
focus issues make this hard to watch
Western NES on S tier is absurd, I loathe that cheap looking gray brick. The rest of S tier is spot on, GBA, GB, N64 and Mega Drive are peak cartridge design.
How could you rate the C64 cartridges higher than the Master System? They are 200x worse, no?
I find the C64 carts kind of a novelty because most are Cassette tapes, so having a cart with no loading times is a + point for me 😅
I have never heard the cart tastes bad for the switch who figured this out and why do it ?! 😂
Hu cards are an S tier for me
You forgot so many!!
I only did the ones I could find in my room. I’ll have to do a part 2 when I can get to the rest of my games!
The coolest is the NES.
it's "nez", not "ness", and "snez", not "sness"
There's no Z in NES
@@RetroBreak my bad, I should have said; it's *pronounced* "nez", not "ness", and "snez", not "sness"
@Chadleyization says who?
