Very good training video that has been scaled to those of us who have little or for me, no idea how the CNC world works. I have been using lasers for 3 years, but this is a whole new experience. I have ordered the AltMill and it is scheduled to arrive in March 2025. I will be ordering your IDC complete set of essential CNC router bits. Thank you so much for the training and the free files. I look forward to more wonderful and informative videos from you in the future.
Welcome to the world of CNC, Allen. I get absolutely no kickbacks for saying this but you have chosen wisely with your purchase of the Altmill and you will not find a better dealer for your router bits than IDC Woodcraft!
allencoleman3786, I'm so glad you found the video helpful! It sounds like you have an exciting journey ahead with your new AltMill and CNC router bits. Enjoy diving into the CNC world!
I just started this cnc mission/passion and this video has got me ready to rock n roll! All your videos are the best!! The tips you share have me saying “YES”!!!! So thank you and your videos are on repeat ❤️ I’m ready to tackle cnc in my next phase of life.. “Retirement 29 years Military service”! 🇺🇸 appreciate you Garrett👊🏼
yoli1800, Thank you so much for your kind words! It's wonderful to hear that you're excited about CNC woodworking, especially as you embark on this new chapter in retirement. Enjoy every moment of your creative journey!
WOW! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful project and for providing all of these amazing gifts, particularly because it is so personal. I have never seen a video so explicitly helpful from start to finish for beginners for this craft or any other craft! You are an amazing leader and teacher. I have saved this video and look forward to watching it several times. I am a newbie 50-something female CNCer and I am hooked! I look forward to binge watching your videos. Thanks again! Kindly and respectfully, Kim
Seriously the best teacher out there. Ive recently bought a CNC and was wondering what software to use as i am a complete beginner. Ive now decided on vcarve due to these awesome tutorials. However, it is teally expensive and pro costs twice as much as desktop (£650 here in England). Im guessing you are using pro but is it possible to do all these things on the desktop version as its only £330? Also, apart from the work are size what are the main major diffeences between them and if i purchase desktop will i be restricted in what i want to do and wish i had purchased pro. Thanks again for the awesome tutorials Garret 👍🏴🇬🇧🇺🇸
paulbateman5769, I'm so glad you're finding the tutorials helpful! VCarve Desktop is a great choice for beginners and can handle a lot of projects just fine. The main differences mainly involve the work area size and some advanced features, but many users find that Desktop meets their needs for a long time. As you grow more experienced and if you find yourself needing those extra features, you could always consider upgrading later. Enjoy your CNC journey,
Garrett love your videos as I can understand what you teaching. I learn by seeing how it is done and you're great at that point. Have a fabulous Thanksgiving with your family and God bless Andrew
WOW! I asked Garrett for something like this a couple of months ago and boy did he come through! This is by far the best from beginning to end video for CNC beginners I've found. Great job Garrett I appreciate it.
I apologize if my comment came off wrong I don’t blame you for putting in a wood burner. I love the smell of wood burning. I grew up building fires in a stripping room for tobacco. Guess I got a little burn out on that. I appreciate all your videos you’ve taught me a lot. Keep up the good work and thanks.
DIdnt make this project exactly but used the knowledge you provided to go back a redo a project that I was working on and I was so much more efficent and understanding of what I was actually doing! thank you for the videos. Going to order some of your bits shortly.
RandyWatson80, I'm so glad to hear that you found the videos helpful and that they improved your project efficiency! Enjoy your new bits and happy woodworking!
This is exactly what i was looking for, just putchased my first CNC machine and now i have a great reference to get things setup and running. Thanks for the video!
th3m1ke, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! It's exciting to consider getting a new CNC machine, and the Longmill is a great choice too. Each machine has its own strengths, so you'll be able to create some fantastic projects with either one.
That's a really good point! I was going to paint the carved areas, but because it was a beginners video, I didn't want to make the video any longer than it already is.
i was thinking the same. I expected him to paint, but we all get the point. simple project for starters and this is the type of project that many of us started with ! great job
bobchristiansen229, Thanks for the kind words! In this project, I used Baltic birch plywood for its durability and smooth finish. It’s a fantastic choice for CNC work!
Hi Mark. That's because you're using multiple router bits in the toolpath. When you go into the toolpath, and the white box, there will be two bits. You need to delete one
The vector you're selecting may not be closed. Select the vector you want to add tabs to, and in the drawing area, click the icon towards the bottom that says join vectors in a straight line. Then try it again
I know its personal preference, but if my projects include cutting the part out, I almost always zero to the bed so that I am sure that I don't cut into my spoilboard.
Hi Tristan. I would have suggested that, but this project is for those who are making their very first projects so I just wanted to keep it as simple as possible. But thank you for commenting about that here so they can read your comment and learn from it!
@IDCWoodcraft, you did an amazing job with the video. Nothing was left out, and it will help those who are new to the skill to build their confidence in this new venture. I wish I had something this detailed when I first started, instead of learning through the trial-by-fire method! :)
Just starting CNC with my snapmaker artisan I am trying to figure out if vcarve is compatible with my machine. One of your coworkers suggested to downloadvthe trial version first but I can not figure out how to send it to my machine. Trial version will not ket me save as a Svg or dxf
I'll look into it with my tech Guy. You should get an email with the link as well. If you don't, send me an email at garrett@idc woodcraft.com and we'll get you taken care of
At ua-cam.com/video/BmRP2lSs7Hg/v-deo.html you made a very specific mention that CNC users will need to get and learn how to use a mouse. Forgive me for my ignorance but is it really common for people on this planet to be unfamiliar with mice, trackpads, and other UI pointing devices?
et_intuition, It's a great question! While most people are familiar with mice and trackpads, there are still some who may not have extensive experience with them, especially if they've been using only touchscreens or similar devices. It's all about making sure everyone feels included and knowledgeable about the tools they'll need for CNC work. Your curiosity is totally valid!

Love the Music Garrett!!! Foot Tapping Music
martyjosephson4937, I'm glad you enjoyed the music! Foot-tapping tunes can really make the projects come to life!

RAcreativewoodworks, Thank you so much for your kind words, Andrew! Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving too!
Great video! I made myself a CNC a few years ago but I’ve never really made any cool projects with it. This will be my first project.
Hey Warner! Make sure you send me a picture when you're done. I want to see
WOW! I asked Garrett for something like this a couple of months ago and boy did he come through! This is by far the best from beginning to end video for CNC beginners I've found. Great job Garrett I appreciate it.
scottdouglass9795, I'm so glad you found the video helpful! Garrett really put a lot of effort into making it informative for everyone.
I wish all cnc videos were like this. A complete walk through step by step
randywoodworking3724, I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the video! Providing a detailed walkthrough is really important to me.
I apologize if my comment came off wrong I don’t blame you for putting in a wood burner. I love the smell of wood burning. I grew up building fires in a stripping room for tobacco. one of the nicest videos you have done
andychapman5476, Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words!
Very well said Garrett, I buy your bits and I am going to have to download that file on the bit info. Have a great day!!
davehoffman9767, Thank you! I hope you find the bit info helpful and have a great day too!
Looking forward to doing this with my new Shaper Origin! Tnanks Garrett! ❤
ctenos45069, You're welcome! Have fun with your Shaper Origin!

cyber0005, Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video thanks for sharing
dennisbracci9212, Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Amazing video, thanks! I want an AltMill so bad but its now over 24 weeks away from delivery. Might have to go with a Longmill instead.
th3m1ke, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! It's exciting to consider getting a new CNC machine, and the Longmill is a great choice too. Each machine has its own strengths, so you'll be able to create some fantastic projects with either one.
Which is the purpose of Oramask in this project ? As you already painted all the project surface why protect the letters ?
That's a really good point! I was going to paint the carved areas, but because it was a beginners video, I didn't want to make the video any longer than it already is.

Great video as usual, Garrett. What kind of wood did you use to make this project?
bobchristiansen229, Thanks for the kind words! In this project, I used Baltic birch plywood for its durability and smooth finish. It’s a fantastic choice for CNC work!
Great video! I’m using vcarve pro and getting 3 tool paths? The first one is pocket1(clear1) ?
3hrs 38min? Thanks!
Hi Mark. That's because you're using multiple router bits in the toolpath. When you go into the toolpath, and the white box, there will be two bits. You need to delete one
Never seen a pc of pine that size at Lowe’s before. Do they only carry it at certain stores?
It will be in the section where you can build your own shelves near lumber
Do you ramp this compression bit in I missed it in the design side
Hi Joe. I did not ramp in this project
Im trying to add tab on my project but it keeps saying there's no vector selected...even after I selected. What am I missing?
The vector you're selecting may not be closed. Select the vector you want to add tabs to, and in the drawing area, click the icon towards the bottom that says join vectors in a straight line. Then try it again

IDCWoodcraft, sorry brother you cant save with the trial version!
Anybody else having a problem with Garrett's download for the project? It keeps saying the path to long.
