@@vamoneygroup nope i can challenge your point. He was the best player in the league for those two weeks he had on February 2012. In that timespan the knicks had a 7 game winning streak without melo. It is one thing to look at the stat sheet and another to actually watch the game. The reason he became the best player at that time is because he came out of nowhere and teams were baffled how great he played and those team he played against had no gameplan against Lin. Beside he had nothing to lose at that time because he was getting kick out of the league if he did not blow up at that time. After those two week teams started to figure him out and that was the end of the Linsanity.
You on the other hand had no point to begin with, stating a an empty statement with no facts to back it up. I bet your favorite analyst is Skip Bayless because all you can do is hate on a player without actually watching and analyzing the game

And let's also not forget that Lin was still a mere rookie during Linsanity, with at most 1 ok playing season before 2011-2012, while those players who "exposed" him, as some were calling it, were already in the league for a decade or more. That would be like Lin being an elementary school 2nd grader being bullied by highschool 10th or 12th graders & yet Lin was able to hold his own against them as a 2nd grader in those 2 months of Linsanity, as Linsanity wasn't just about the 7-game win streak (although there was also a 6-game loss streak & 5-game win streak after). And that included not being a hyped-up player going into the NBA. We also have to remember that Lin did not ask for Linsanity. Just like him, Linsanity also came out of nowhere. As mentioned, he was just desperate to stay in the league after being traded twice, including not even getting a scholarship after being the top high school senior player in N.California. And to think that years later he could have returned to GSW in 2020, to be reunited with Steph Curry, but that didn't happen. Who brings a 10-year vet to the minor leagues? Smh. The hype of Linsanity 2.0 alone, not including the hype of his return/homecoming back to the Bay area to play again, would have been huge, especially when it was exactly 10 years since he was with GSW. Lin is currently playing in Taiwan, his parents' home country, as a Steeler, after his stint in China & is still putting up decent numbers, like another 38-point high, just as he did the 38 points as a Knick & 38 points as a Rocket. Just weird that it's the number 38 for some reason, heh. But one thing for sure, he doesn't have to put up with racism & stereotyping where he is currently playing, while he got loads of that in the country where he was born. If anything, Jeremy's short mission with the Knicks was to bring them back up to 0.500 so they could have a post-season, when they had a drought 8 of 10 seasons before he came along. And then the Knicks got another near-decade drought after he left. Yes they were successful the next year without him, but that was about it, then it was 7 years straight of nothing.
Ben Simmons is a better example for Shaq to use. Nobody ever called Jeremy Lin a franchise player.

Lin had to work 100x as hard as any NBA player to get recognition and earn himself a place in the NBA. His worldly brand is as big as any NBA legend and Lin is the definition of one of the greatest sports stories of all time

Jeremy Lin is a player that gave us a dream to make it to the NBA. He took every opportunity, and he worked hard to reach that level. Sure, he's not the superstar like the Kobe and MJs, but everyone's story to be part of the NBA has a meaning.

Jeremy Lin only gets the press he does because he's not of African descent. Jeremy Lin's career stats are comparable to Raymond Felton and Ramon Sessions.. Thousands of players have had better careers. That's Shaq's point. He had a hot streak the year he averaged 14 alongside Melo & Amare and everyone hyping him today are the same ones that suggested New York should relieve Melo & Amare of their stardom and lean on Jeremy Lin.. You guys are the reason they traded him that same year.

Jeremy Lin was never supposed to be a "great player". He ceiling was good player. He just caught lightning in a bottle that took the world by storm for a month. But once the hype died down, he still had a solid NBA career.

There is definitely a lot of players who resented the attention Lin received, and they did everything they could do to downplay his game. If Shaq was being honest, he would also add that Lin was never truly given a fair opportunity once he left the Knicks. He still managed to shine during moments, but he was often boxed out by his own teammates in Houston and L.A.
Harden practically ignored him, and Kobe was never really open to having Lin as a teammate. He was taken out of the lineup during major moments in the playoffs when he was in Houston. The only person who truly believed in him was Mike Dantoni.
Not surprising to see people like Shaq still taking shots at him. Even the other people on the panel were like "Why you bringing him up?"
Ben Simmons is basically a BUM, and a much better example to use in this situation. Lin worked extremely hard, and was a straight up baller. He doesn't deserve this garbage.
Amare and a lot of other dudes liked Lin, even Kobe came to like him before he retired so it's not all bleak at least.
Lin was no all star but he was unlucky. After his 2 week stint, the game plan changed with Melo back. D Antonio works wonders with a guard focused offense and heavy iso Melo returned and changed that. When Lin got overpaid to go to Houston, he probably thought he would be able to get his touch back but then they got Harden and that basically ended his rise. He became a decent role player but injuries cut his career short. Athletic slashers do not last long in the league. He lost his athleticism due to injuries and was never good defensively. He still lasted 9 years in the league which is amazing for an undrafted player.
Glad that you noticed that, about his slashing. I have observed & commented about that over the years. A car crash is bound to happen when there are too many cars on the free-way. Or in this case, on or near the free-throw area. Knocked knees indeed. But yes, everywhere he went, he was eventually put in the background, once another guard is told to take over. Lin had been good as long as he is the primary floor general. A lot of that has to do with confidence, which is a sports stat/metric that cannot be measured. He was pretty good in Houston though before Harden came aboard, including tying his 38-point record from NY. Or also had played well when he was alongside Harden many times. Houston could have won post-season against the Blazers in 2014 if he had not been set out by coach, because Lin was a good defender against a still-rookie Lillard. But that's hindsight for you.
Not hating on your comment but a common misconception of Jeremy lin weakness was defense. He had a career defensive rating of 108 and in 2015-2016 season he ranked #2 point guard in blocks per 36 min only behind john wall. Google his defensive ability he’s a lot better than people think. It’s just bias and racism cause he’s Asian. But stats don’t lie.
Lin actually had a good career during his run in the NBA, the injury was too much for him. He did well with the teams he played for except for the Lakers. Knicks Linsanity, Rockets had a good run with him, Lakers strategy was tanking, he was extremely matured playing for the Hornets, bad luck during his Nets time, was coming back greatly with the Hawks which lead the Raptors to sign him and got his ring though he sat on the bench most of the time. Lin's resume looks fairly nice compare to most of the players.
I am a JLin fan, but 2 things I did not like was ...
1. He often relied too much on his faith, which I think might have made him a little too "soft" &
2. He became too much of a journeyman. I think he should have stayed in Charlotte for at least another year or 2, or more, as he was given that choice to stay, partly because you cannot beat being associated with Michael Jordan there & Lin has said that the Hornets was his most fun time.
So, I think he was always looking for something on the horizon & not satisfied with what he already had. He should have also stayed in NY rather than taking that poison pill, but maybe I suppose that Knicks scenario for a 2nd season was already doomed because D'Antonio was already pushed out (by Melo) & Amare also had some issues with Melo, not to mention that with Melo in the rotation, there would be more iso-ball rather than team-ball which JLin became known for, because the team was already tanking before the discovery of Linsanity.

He even took shots from Tyson Chandler after he was traded to the Rockets . Knicks vs Rockets. and I'm not a very religious person but If everyone gives up on you , you always hold on to your faith and family.
@@gt8932 ... In any physically-demanding sport, including basketball, you can take any hit as part of the game. Or as fouls, which is a violation of the game. What happened with Lin is that he took too many hits without fighting back on some occasion as a natural response, whether the hits were deemed fouls or not. Clapping back on hard hits, foul or not, flagrant or not, has happened with other players over the years & we accept that reaction as fans because we felt it as a just reaction, just as the one clapping back also feels it was also a fair reaction. For Lin, the religion could partly be a reason of not fighting back, although not the entire reason. His Asian family & ancient/traditional cultural values would be another part of it. I'm going to make a hard guess that you won't/don't see much fighting in professional basketball in Asia, such as in the CBA, as more frequently as we've seen in NBA & ABA history. Maybe even in football (soccer) as much as we've seen fighting between athletes & between fans in pro leagues in Europe, Russia & entire continent of America. I'm sure there are some fights in Asia, just less frequent. Again, I'm making a guess & that culture is part of the reason it is less frequent.
And as many people have witnessed over the years, there was this overall feeling that referees missed a lot of hard fouls happening on Lin. I believe there was even a video compilation on that, iirc. And not just by Chandler, but also by Melo, Kobe, Aldridge, etc. While it is admirable to not falter on faith & culture, it could also lead to a path that you may not want if you lean on it too much. I believe that happened to Lin & yet for years he did not accept the fact his faith might have helped contributed to him eventually getting pushed out of the league, who knows. And he tried to return in 2020 but instead they put him into the minors. Imagine that, a decade-long veteran is put into the minors. And not just any veteran, it was one that made historical impact. The NBA might have missed out on an opportunity placing him back with his former majors team, which included reuniting with former teammate Steph, if not just for becoming a possible dual or triple shooting threat, but also for marketing hype, in a time/era when the Splash Bros was happening, just as the hype of Linsanity itself set the world, not just NY & the US, on fire. And it was also his hometown/region to top it off. Sure, his stats failed him along the years, but I think a part of that was the fading confidence in himself. The clapback from critics on him winning the championship in Toronto, criticizing him of practically not playing, pushed him over the edge. In the 75 years of the NBA, no one has focused on a player with a magnifying glass, for not playing but still getting a trophy, more than they had on Lin. That confidence could have returned if he was put on a winning team. We saw him become a top player in the nba minors, so he could have gotten better in the majors. Yes, injury has hampered him (including his back issues), but re-instilling confidence could have helped overcome some of that if put on a winning team.
Anyway, sadly none of that potential happened returning to his hometown team in 2020 & many people feel he was done dirty again. It's a huge possibility he may never return now, as age is now a detriment, & that he has already accepted that fate, as he currently plays overseas. And maybe he now most likely accepts it the will of the creator. At least he is with his "people" at the moment, where there is much much less racial discrimination, which happened in his own country he was born in. But he can still possibly return as an NBA coach sometime in the future. Another potential but unknown outcome that is possible by divine providence. To which he could possibly coach a team to a Finals & maybe even win it. We already saw him on some occasions with the coaching clipboard during timeouts, such as in Houston etc. Perhaps a sign of things to come? Becoming a winning NBA coach could be God's way of redemption for him, a Linsanity 2.0 of sorts. But yeah, I am indeed a fan & you can sometimes have the freedom of criticizing some actions of ones you admire. :)

They don't really fight each other, they just pretend to. CBA refs brow fewer whistles just like the 90s NBA, and they play more physically because they have size but less skill. It's nothing related to culture. If you watched Lin play in CBA, Lin got the same hard fouls as NBA before. Just because the Chinese players thought Lin was Asian like them, they wanted to prove that they were as good as Lin, and that's why they played Lin more physically.

I believe he even fixed his ability to only drive and create on one side of the floor. I don't know how he's done on jump shooting but I know his ability to be a pass first, driving pg has improved greatly

You make a good point. Shaq should not have used Lin as an example. Jeremy had a great ride...and in my opinion, should have remained in the NBA longer. In this case, Shaq could have used Kawhi Leonard (for example) who sits out games all the time. But maybe it´s easier to go after Lin. In todays NBA, there are simply not many GREAT players.

Jeremy Lin has shown greatness throughout his career. High school: championship. Harvard: amazing winning season. Knicks: linsanity. Rockets: playoffs. Charlotte: playoffs. Toronto: Championship. Asia: killing it
Shaq missed the whole point of Lin's rise to fame. He was an undrafted kid who came out of nowhere and took the league by storm for a short time and managed to hang around for a while. He wasn't expected to be the go-to guy who had an unexpected decline.

Thinking more about this take from Shaq and I actually understand why he feels the way he does. Shaq is defending his own definition of greatness - those that perform at the top of their field consistently year after year. I can respect that he only comprehends his own narrow definition of the word.
The thing is, for many of us, greatness isn't always defined in such a narrow sense. For athletes like Shaq that were BORN with natural gifts that lend themselves to excel in a given sport, then Shaq's own definition of greatness actually makes sense. If you're 7'1" and 325 lbs if you're failing to exceed above the rest of the field consistently then you're certainly not going to be considered a great but rather a disappointment because that same crutch that you're able to lean on in terms of your physical gifts are also setting an expectation for you to meet.
Not all athletes are born with extraordinary gifts like Shaq however. Many athletes have to compensate through nothing but hard work because they have nothing else going for them. This is where a more nuanced definition of greatness arises. A definition that the rest of us can see as spectators as greatness in a more relatable sense. As spectators there is something incredibly special about witnessing someone go above and beyond when there is no expectation set for them. We can't relate to first round draft picks but we can relate to undrafted players, players that are fighting to even make the roster. When players like this play the way Jeremy Lin did, they're great.

Lins story was special because it was a Cinderella story. Remeber he was on a 10-day nba contract and was proabably going to get cut the next day but blew up on some garbage minutes, and then sustained that for a couple weeks. He made everyone around him significantly better too, and the whole squad played special those two weeks. He would later go on to have a very average NBA career and clearly still belonged in the league, as he was putting up major numbers in the G league. So what happened to him? He got black balled.

So, to say Lin is an all time great would be ridiculous, but to acknowledge that he showed that Asians can hoop as an elite guard in the NBA, we should have given him his flowers during his moment. So, many times minorities are overlooked, but for that moment he was the center of attention in the league.
