A look at the fantastic Carpenters workshop project at Pewsham Locks on the Wilts & Berks Canal near to Chippenham in Wiltshire. The build is as close as they can get it to how they believe it would have looked, complete with slate tiles, timber cladding but with modern regulations. We also take a look at the Dry Dock, the meadows and the locks being currently restored.
We then Take a walk down Towards Queen Camilla's house and see the Naish Hill Section as it's being restored from an overgrown channel to a navigable canal. Both the Queen and King Charles do so much for canal restoration and the Queen is a patron of the WBCT

“Waney edged Larch cladding” thanks Steve, the best canal restoration videos on UA-cam bar none, so many restorations and continuous ongoing updates! Well done Sir.
Thank you :)
Great update on a very impressive restoration project. The Carpenters Workshop should in my view, get an award for the sensitivity of restoration, with Larch wavy-edge cladding and brick floor. It will be an amazing resource for popularizing canal life, particularly amongst young people. The restored dry dock is also very impressive and a good indication of the projects priorities in restoring not only the canal, but also some of the adjoining infrastructure. Great stuff. Thank's.
@@malcolmrichardson3881 every single thing they do down there is to restore to its historic point. People often ask why they don’t widen the locks so wide beams can get down them, I get the question but that means losing all the heritage assets along the canal.
@@malcolmrichardson3881 I also think they will win awards once it’s built
Hello, a couple of the winners didn’t respond and your name was one of the spares drawn out, please email me at courtabovethecut@yahoo.com and I’ll set you up with the trust
Larch. Good to see a canal being brought to life so quickly with decent volunteer numbers and funding.
Numbers are crazy down there these days. I don’t volunteer these days as making videos takes up any free time I have away from the family and my business but when I did a few years ago you wouldn’t get 10 at a party, nowadays you go down there sometimes and there’s 3-4 teams all working in different areas, on different ends of the canal. It’s a hive of activity
The WBCT are doing a great job and really moving along at some pace, I wish them all the best in their endeavours.
@@stevehill4615 they are doing a great job on many fronts, it’s a shame the eastern end is so up in the air with the reservoir
It's "waney edge larch".
Good to see the progress after we had the tour around on the last open day
It's progressing loads, I'm looking forward to the summer and the return of the boat trips and tours!
Will be great if the boat trips can go right down through double bridge, I'm sure the next tour will be a bit different next summer and I'm looking forward to the cakes too. well done to the whole team
Your videos are great, realy enjoy them! 👍
Thank you :) and thanks for watching
Very good video again. You do an excellent job of every one . Good Job 👏👍👏👍 and to the canal trust.... Good Job 👏👍👏👍
Thank you very much!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support!
Great to see another update on this section!
Hi Steve, great vlog. The restoration is looking great. It’s going to be a beautiful area to cruise when open. The cladding is Larchwood, thanks for your hard work mate 👍
It is a really beautiful area, the stretch between what I covered is one of my favourite places on the entire Uk canal network, it’s lush!
@@paulturner7837 congratulations you are a winner, please pop me a message at courtabovethecut@yahoo.com
Good to see the progress being made. The Workshop is clad in Waney Edged Larch Cladding.
I’ll be doing the draw in the next few days

Larch... good video, good audio Mr. C. Brilliant coverage thanks.
Thanks, I actually forgot to switch my mic on for the second bit 😂 the built in microphone seems to be decent on the new camera
@@Gizepi congratulations you are a winner, please pop me a message at courtabovethecut@yahoo.com
Great to see all the progress being made at Pewsham and down to Naish Hill. I enjoyed many a walk along this section & would love to be involved if I still lived in the area.
Thanks for the update Steve 👏
No problem, there will be a few more in the swindon/chippenham area over winter as it’s close for me. With the bad weather and short days I won’t really be going up north
I really enjoy these vids, i have nothing to do with Canels ore boats, but just enjoy what is going on,
@@stevem7868-y4l that’s good to hear and part of why I make them.
I love a channel called auto shenanigans, I have no real interest in motorways but I love driving around and seeing bits and know what it’s all about!

Saw this on UA-cam notifications and wondered if it was Pewsham Canal restoration. Decided to watch it and found it very interesting. Is that the towpath that goes Lacock way? 👏❤️🐸
@@frogladybg6199 yes, the canal ends and then you can go across the fields past Camilla’s
@ thanks for reply. I’m too old to walk from Reybridge to Pewsham but know folks who are lucky enough to do this.❤️🐸
It's my favourite walk, I'll bring you some more videos from that way next year, I want to do one in Lacock as well
Great progress and quality work being done. Sound like you caught them working. ;~)
For volunteers it always amazes me how much they can turn their hands too
Larch cladding. As a Time Team aficionado, the surprising bit was a dry dock with an apse!
@@TheHoveHeretic do you mean the curve on the end? I always though an apse was the curve of a vault
@@CourtAboveTheCut You could be right. It's just that the TT diggers always get* terribly excited when a curved wall tacked on to a rectalinear remains appeared, with 'are we looking at an apse?' .... usually followed by 'it's too early to say for sure!
*note tense. They're back and on this very platform.
@@TheHoveHeretic I guess the term just means a curve in masonry so works if it’s horizontal or vertical
They have certainly come on leaps and bounds since I was last walking along the canal in September. Are they going to rebuild the lock keepers building the other side if the bridge? It’s waney edge Larch cladding by the way
@@Fearnstein yes but it’s not really on the radar at the moment. The next things you’ll see is the accommodation bridge, the carpenters finished, a roof on the dry dock all of these things are well into happening, then bottom lock and the saw pit, there’s money for the saw pit from a will I believe and there’s stuff happening towards the bottom lock which I’m not allowed to mention as it’s not completely confirmed yet.
They clad it with larch cladding.....👍
I’ll let you know how you got on.

Not trying to undermine the video, and a genuine question. I’ve lived on Pewsham for 20 years and have seen a lot of stop start going on with bit of canal, any idea when it’ll join up with the rest of the Wilts and Berks canal?
They are waiting for the EA to make a decision on the melksham link, it’s been going on for at least a decade. Once that’s done they can start linking the kennet and Avon to the Avon at Melksham then continuing on to lacock and here.
The trust has changed drastically over the last 5 years or so, it’s now a much more capable organisation
Larch, Steve.

We need the canal locks restored in Runcorn (Cheshire) … there used to be a flight of locks connecting the Bridgewater Canal spur to the Manchester Ship Canal … I believe that they were filled in when the bridge across the river Mersey was built in the 1960’s … I understand that there is some interest in restoring this historic link between river and canal but I’ve not heard anything more about this project.
Does anyone have any info about this ?

@@CourtAboveTheCut hi … I’m happy that I’ve found out more information about this restoration project but it’s definitely still in its infancy … it looks like it will take a good few years to complete so I’m optimistic about still being around for the opening ceremony … I’m 71 years old now .. but you never know !
