Nice job and very informative. You’re right, some profile adjustments and you would be spot on. Thanks for al your hard work, or should I say, labor of love in brewing. Cool to see you becoming more mainstream and being included in these products development process. Cheers Scott
Yeah not much tweaking should be necessary. Thanks for the comments Scott! Cheers!! 👍🍻
Thanks for the video Bryan! Especially taking temp readings from the center and outside. That thought never crossed my mind that there'd be a difference
Yeah I had a feeling there would be a little difference. But as long as the average is write you want it I think it will end up with food results! Glad you enjoyed! 👍🍻
Awesome video! Thank you very much for the honesty. Looking forward to this unit once available...
Thanks for watching!! 👍🍻
Great video! Thanks. I'd love to see more on this system.
More to come!
Thanks for this video Brian! Spike makes some amazing equipment. I love all my Spike kettles. This looks to be a pretty solid eBIAB option, and a great brew day. I hope you do some tasting video when it's ready. Cheers!
For sure!! Thanks Matt! 👍🍻
Thanks for the video Brian! Perfect for me to watch while I am waiting on a coat of poly to dry. Honey do list while on quarentee lol. Sláinte!
Thanks Dennis!! Lol stay with it! You want to get that list done! 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers You know the deal.... Momma ain't happy...ain't no one happy. Lol! Make her happy and I can buy more brewing gear 🤙
Just used A38 for the first time myself, good thing I used my larger fermenter lol
Really liking the Spike system the more I read and learn about them.
Very active yeast indeed!! 👍🍻
I would think the simple answer would be to add length to the recirculating tubing, allowing it to lay on top of a small grain bed. I brew in a 30 gallon e herms system and sometimes do 5 gallon batches while using the longer tubing. As a side note, my efficiency is in the high 60's with 5 gallon batches and into the 80's with 15 or more gallons. My 3 vessels are Spike Kettles...love 'em! They make awesome equipment.
Yeah I think you are right on the tubing. Cheers! 👍🍻
I've seen some with systems like this do an "around/under the basket" recirculation along with traditional through the grain bed recirculation simultaneously with good results. Seems like that could work well with your setup here with a little modification, rather than one or the other.
Yes the brewtools systems incorporate this. I got the idea from that system (I currently have one on loan from them) I could easily do it with this one just need to add a 3 way valve to the pump outlet. (Which I have in case I want to test it out) 👍🍻
Also it seems that recirculation tube is the weak point of the system getting it set right. Does it need to whirlpool during that step? Or could you use their center drop arm up top some you could feed it to the center into a fly sparge nozzle?
Thanks for the review. I currently brew small batch (1.25 gal) biab and I’m waiting impatiently for Spike’s system to become available. I want to move up to 5 gal batches so I think I’ll go with the 15 gal system vs the 20 gal you’re testing as I think it will be better optimized for that batch size. However, nice to know that the systems are flexible.
Yeah the smallee versions will be out in the near future.. 👍🍻
Great job demonstrating the small batch. Your mash finished at about 7:47 in the video. Your pump out hose was connected to the whirlpool port. Shouldn't you be recirculating the wort via the mash basket port during the mash? That would fix the temperature inconsistencies you experienced.I would recommend getting a longer silicone hose so the end just rests on top of the grain bed.
The solo has a hard time maintaining temps due to the sensor placement. I was recirculating a small amount through the whirlpool to keep the wort moving part the sensor in an effort to try help the accuracy. 👍🍻
This is my dilemma, I brew 5 gallons and I want to be able to brew high abv beers and that’s why I was looking at 20 gallon kettles. Good video Brian
Thanks. Hope this helped you out! 👍🍻
Great Video! Question for you. What is the time it took on brew day from starting to bring water to mash temp to finishing the boil? I’m on a 120V Robobrew and hate the 6+ hour brew day. I think doing 5 gal recipe with no sparge can get down to roughly 3 hours.
With cleanup and everything was probably 4 hours.. It was pretty quick with a 5500watt element. 👍🍻
Great video. I really like Spike Brewing"s equipment. I've always been interested in the Spike Flex + 7gal stainless fermentor, but I can't seem to find very many videos outside of initial reviews. I was curious to see how people are using it and what their opinions were on it.
My buddy Larry had a review on it and he's been using it for a while now. ua-cam.com/video/C6YztLsSYiE/v-deo.html
I've got both the Flex and Flex plus and love them both. If I buy another I would get the Flex+ instead of the regular Flex as it gives you the option of doing pressure transfers. They have an upgrade kit but you're better off just buying the Flex + and saving a few dollars in the long run.
Hi Brian great video and thanks for all the information, I think I’m going to order this System, my question to you is what are you using for a stand to hold that kettle, I’m looking for something short like that, thanks again and look forward to seeing more of you videos
It is a harbor freight step stool!! 🍻👍
Thanks for doing a 5 gallon batch. Looks fantastic!
One question: how long did you boil to get the volume down to 5.5 gallons on this batch?
If remember it was about an extra 20 minutes. So an 80 minute total boil. 👍🍻
I would like to see a follow up finished product🤞good video
Thanks!! We'll see what they want to do! 👍🍻
Can you do a video on how to set up equipment for a HERMS system, such as SPIKE Trio, in Brewfather?
I'll add it to the list👍🍻
Hey Bryan, I just got my anvil foundry and am prepping for the first brew day. Two questions: what's the best width setting for the mill for this? I currently have mine at .025" I think, but I'm not sure if that's too fine. Second, would you recommend putting a brew bag inside the machine to filter out any small bits?
I use mine at a credit card width. Quite a few people are using bags now. It will produce a cleaner wort and you could probably double crush your grain. You'll probably be ok with that gap. It's just barely tightee than a credit card. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers thank you!
Just ordered one from their bargain cave. Mainly to do 10g batches since 5g kegs don't last long enough in a kegerator... But here to see how to do a test batch size specifically for new recipes.
Glad it helped! 👍🍻
Thank you for the video. May I ask what you have the Spike Vessel sitting on?
A harbor freight step stool, cheap and effective!
Did you have any issues with hops clogging? Are you using any sort of filter when transferring to your fermenter?
No issue with any clogging at all.. I did not use a filter. I am using a riptide pump. 👍🍻
Another great brew day video! Question: Where can I buy that articulating faucet arm you have mounted above the kettle? Cheers!
It is a triclamp elbow/dip tube

Are you referring to the pot filler? You can buy them at any hardware store or amazon.
@@Trent1899 haha I misread the comment... Lol
I got it off of Amazon

Do you have a link to that step ladder/table thing you have the kettle sitting on?
Harbour Freight step stool.
Great video! I want to do BIAB but not sure if I want to do this system or do something with gas. Not sure which way to go.
Definitely a ton of options out there!! 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I do like that they will be selling just the basket and can easily do this with gas.
If I could do it over again I’d go electric!!! Just saying...

Brewing my favorite IPA style. I have one ready for the second dry hop addition today. Extract kit. The water profiling is my new step up to make it better, I think. I've read that Alum will also drop PH. I tested it and it does. Have you tried that at all? Great video again BTW! Cheers
I have not I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the comments! 👍🍻
I would not use alum, as it is also a strong coagulant, meaning it will act like a finning agent. Alum is often used as a clarification aid in waste water systems.
Oh... Is it harmful? I had never heard of using it.
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers It's used for pickling cucumbers to make them crisp. I did an experiment to see what happens. I'll let you know how it turns out.
@@AllenDrewesBuilds sounds good let me know! 👍🍻
Apologies if it’s been covered already but any idea why Spike went with that type of recirculating method, as opposed to a spray or drip method that goes thru the entire grain bed?
Have to ask them about that. I'm not sure. 👍🍻
Although fancy sprayers, rotating whirligigs, etc look awesome we just haven't seen any benefit to them with all of our testing over the years. It adds cost and doesn't add function. We usually tend to lean towards function over gimmicky add ons.
Spike Brewing - Gotcha. I wondered if there’d be efficiency issues since the grain toward the middle seemingly looks undisturbed, unless the user gives it a stir periodically. Thanks for the reply!
Did you have any issues with grain pieces in the boil? How effective is the false bottom?
It works fine. The flow is a little slow sometimes. 👍🍻
Great video!
I know this is a no sparge system, but I noticed that in this brew, you had a total mash water of 9.5 gallons and a total grain bill of 12 lbs. By my calculations, that comes out to 3.16 qt/per pound of grain (water to grain ratio).
I point this out because I have had efficiency issues with my Spike Solo and I’m wondering if it is because I’ve had too dry of a mash. For example, in creating the custom profile for the Spike equipment, and using a 1.29 water/grain ratio, I had a total mash water volume of 12.15 gallons for a 21.5 lbs grain bill..... if I would have brewed the same recipe with your water to grain ratio in this video (3.16), it would have been 17 gallons.
What are your thoughts?
Make sure you have the correct dead space under the mash basket. What software are you using?
I am using Brewfather. I followed your video recommendations for adding Spike Solo 20G equipment you the software. I can’t remember what the dead space volume I plugged in but it was what was said to add in your video about adding the equipment.
Like I said I’m just learning this new electric brew system and getting used it to. Your videos are super helpful so I wanted to reach out to you as a resource. Spike wasn’t that helpful despite giving them a ton of information.
The mash water amount does seem light. If you use a no Sparge profile. Let it adjust for grain absorbtion. Without paying attention to the grist ratio.
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I plugged in all the numbers in the tutorial video on your page for brew father.... 0.383 qt/lb absorption rate. 1.294 qt/lb of water to grist ratio. I selected no sparge...
I have the 3.5 gallon dead space plugged in like in your tutorial video... one thing I noticed though is in my recipe on brewfather, with my 21.5 lb grain bill, if I adjust the dead space to 6.9 gallons which is the dead space listed on the Spike website for the Solo Basket with 12 gallons in the kettle, the brewfather program shows the exact same total mash water volume as it did when I had 3.5 gallons dead space plugged in... is this a flaw with the Brew father program?
@@chesroberts2275 you'll have to send me some screenshots of your profile. Something is wrong, maybe a box not checked. Not sure exactly. Send the pics to brian@shortcircuitedbrewers.com
How do you change the power output on the pid? There wasn’t much info on this from spike.
I went over that in this video. (I have it time stamped to take you right to the instructions. 👍🍻 ua-cam.com/video/wooyS_fTUbst/v-deo.html=18m48s
Why not utilize the recirculation of the system? The mash conversion is much faster that way.
I believe it would have been channeling the grain due to the depth of the grain bed.
Why is there no sparge with this system? I have a brewzilla and I need to sparge and I thought all brew in a bag systems where the same. I really appreciate your videos there are very informative and enjoyable.
Just the way it was designed. You can sparge with it. If you check out my other video on the system I did a sparge with the system. 👍🍻
How did you chill this ? Did you use the optional spike wort chiller
Counterflow chiller from Exchillerator.
I'm in the market for a shop sink and I like the one you have there. Can you provide a link to that manufacturer? Thanks.

Hey Brian, so far which are your top 3 brewsystems?
Depends on the size of batch really
Cool stuff. So if you wanted to do a 10 gallon batch, would you just double your minerals?
You woukd need to calculate the additions as usual.brunwater or other software. Not just double them. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Ok thanks. I use an old cobble stone system I put together so to see the equipment for homebrew today is really awesome. Nice system.
@@johhnyglaze1 thanks! 👍🍻
How important is the PH and why is it so important
The starches in all grain brewing need to be in a pH of 5.2-5.6 for optimal conversion. It is very important otherwise you won't convert as much of the starches to sugar. 👍🍻
