Yeah it works well so that paint chipping and having to use more coats to cover a different color aren't as big of an issue ..... just make sure the marker has fully dried for a couple of hours and give it a quick wipe with a towel before painting to make sure any excess marker that didn't soak into the plastic is removed from the surface before painting
Dye doesn't work that way ...... You'd still have to paint the figure to get the same color ...... It would be the same as using the marker, except it's messier, costs more and takes longer than just using a marker
I always use permanent market to dye of stain the plastic with a darker colour, it works pretty well with some black ones and the blue and browns
