Speaking of driving while listening to this song, WMMS "The Buzzard" in Cleveland, Ohio used to play this song every Friday at 5:00 P.M. as a "Kick off the weekend" song. It kind of re-energized you after a hard week at work or school.
They were a one hit wonder, but were a big time party band that played many shows over the years, representing the early to mid 80s Canadian invasion. I also love how the video follows the band over 30 some odd years as they aged gracefully - was a fun as hell tune. In my Mustang GT around 1985 with a Tshirt and jeans on. No open shirt that's 70s 😁
This song is based on a lot of things they experienced. This beat goes on was because the one singer couldn’t come up with an ending when he wrote it so another band member came up with another part hence the 2 songs in one. The Mercedes part was a car they owned that they took everywhere . They did a documentary on this song and their experiences being on the road. Super nice guys as well and yes a perfect road song that you can’t help but turn it way up lol.
Wow! In Minneapolis growing up, a local DJ on KQRS would often play this song then Driver’s Seat back-to-back. My older sister would drive the station wagon (she may have been 15 and just grabbed the keys when the folks went out) and we would cruise and wait for it on a Saturday night. Love those tunes. Love my sis. Love those days!
Wow! This brings me back to my early 20s and blasting this on my cassette deck as loud as I could driving down the road. Slapping that steering wheel like it owed me money!
I'm Toronto born and raised and this song was so iconic in my early childhood. What was I doing with song you ask? Jumping up and down singing along to it, blasting it in my dad's 1977 Grand Prix and him lowering the volume a bit and smiling at me, watching me dancing in the passenger seat... lol I think of good ol' hot summer day... good ol' early childhood memories. This is unique. The two songs blended... I AAAAAM CANADIAN 🇨🇦 Great song!

I've always loved this song. Every time I hear it, I'm transported back in time. Around 10 p.m. on a Saturday night, speeding down the left lane of the DVP on the way to Scotland Yard.
Saw them with Angle City, Dec. 18, 1980 in the Paramount Theater, Portland Oregon. That was a really rockin show, The Kings are great live. I have great memories from that night, and still have the ticket too.
The song was huge in Canada, it was kind of the weekend anthem, filled up the dance floor at clubs all over. They were a pretty good band, but only got the hit with this song. You should try Big Sugar, another under rated Canadian band, I suggest Diggin a Hole or Turn the Lights on for starters, but they did some amazing blues too.
Been thinkin' Tom Cochranes "Lunatic Fringe" seems apropos. The CRTCs rules about Canadian Content mean some songs we think are classics are completely unknown to those outside of it.

One of my favourite lines ever: "Nothing matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view." Truer words were never spoken. Also the shout out to Toronto. Speaking of driving while listening to this song, WMMS "The Buzzard" in Cleveland, Ohio used to play this song every Friday at 5:00 P.M. as a "Kick off the weekend" song. It kind of re-energized you after a hard week at work or school.
Same thing with WLVQ in Columbus, Ohio.
I remember Billy Bass from WMMS. Those were the days!
@@hyperboloidofonesheet1036 was about to say the same thing ! That's been an awful long time ago though. Now they play the same songs over and over .
Yes WMMS was very good to us!
@@hyperboloidofonesheet1036 Yes!
Thank You Jamal one of my requests yay!! Great Song!

Man I glad you did a reaction to the song. One of my favorites.
Thanks Grant!
The Kings were the best party band of the 80s. Saw them many times and they always got the place going.
Have you done Driver's Seat by Sniff 'N the Tears?
My Favorite Song!!!!! I can't listen to this one enough!!! I remember it when it first came out!!!!
Thanks Gail!
Wow! This brings me back to my early 20s and blasting this on my cassette deck as loud as I could driving down the road. Slapping that steering wheel like it owed me money!
Great comment D!
I AAAAAM CANADIAN 🇨🇦
Great song!
Roller RINK Special! Used to race around on skates when this song came on...Great Tune. Under appreciated Band from Canada. Interesting fact. The Man who produced Pink Floyd The Wall Album heard the Kings and offered to produce this song for them,,,and so he did.
Great choice...Classic driving tune!
This came out in my high school years...
What a great music scene Toronto had, with great Toronto bands!!
Thx for featuring, Jamel! 👍
Yes it was great Scott, thanks!
I was listening to it on the Radio and dancing around in my rec room down stairs....another great Canadian Band!!
Next Canadian Bands:
Goddo - Sweet thing - Pretty Bad boy
Streetheart - One more time - Tin solder - Under my thumb
Harlequin - Innocence - I did it for Love - Sweet things in Life
April Wine - Rock myself to sleep - Sign of the Gypsy Queen - I'm on fire for you baby
Toronto - Even the Score - Your Daddy don't know - Start telling the truth

Just a few to start with, You already know (Rush - The Guess Who - BTO - Bryan Adams - Alanis Morissette - Celine Dion)
@Rene17 - Streetheart "Action" and "Here Comes the Night".
I've always loved this song. Every time I hear it, I'm transported back in time. Around 10 p.m. on a Saturday night, speeding down the left lane of the DVP on the way to Scotland Yard.
Love that comment Heidi!
Brings back great memories of driving around cranking this tune on the radio.
For sure Michael!
Canadian here - still love this song. I was gobsmacked when I saw this the choice. Thanks Jamel!
Been thinkin' Tom Cochranes "Lunatic Fringe" seems apropos. The CRTCs rules about Canadian Content mean some songs we think are classics are completely unknown to those outside of it.
It was a staple for radio stations on Fridays in Detroit, too. 💕

The version of “The Beat Goes On” that you’re remembering was a different song entirely. And it was a 1967 single by Sonny and Cher.

Right! I can't even remember the last time I heard this song! So good!!!
@@MamaNaeNae I hadn't heard it in at least 15 years.

This song is all original. I have been listening to The Kings since the 1980's. KDKB in Phoenix used to play this every Friday afternoon for the drive home. Always a joy to listen. It's one of those songs that makes you drive faster then you should.
This is the best caught in Friday rush hour traffic song ever!
Even better with no traffic?
@@thekingsarehere Back in the late 80s to mid-90s on 95.5 KLOS, Geno Michellini played this a LOT on his "Bang the Drum" segment (also featured the Todd Rundgren song, of course!), every Friday afternoon, to signal the start of the weekend! An hour of nothing but party music, with lots of jokes, funny one-liners from classic comedy movies interspersed in-between! Great to help deal with traffic, or just to have some fun!
@@screwyootube1 Thanks screwyootube, we were so fortunate to get airplay on major market stations like KLOS in LA, now if we could only find a photo of our album cover on the wall at Tower Records... ! Still love LA!
So glad you covered this. The greatest one hit wonder that never made it. I love this song and these guys. As you can see they are truly appreciative of their fans such as yourself!
And you too Ldastro!
One of my favourite lines ever: "Nothing matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view." Truer words were never spoken. Also the shout out to Toronto. And up until recently the line "Me and Zero request you in the Mercedes." I thought it was a clever way of saying just you and me alone. Zero, as in no one else. Then I find out Zero is the name of the band member. lol
I've loved this song for as long as I can remember...almost. It's been a long time. My memory isn't so great these days, but I do remember when I got my first computer and internet (dial-up)
and one of the first things I searched for was this song. I hadn't heard it ages and missed. I got no results, but a couple of years later I did! I was thrilled, I couldn't find a record or tape of it anywhere. But now I have it on the web! What a great song!
Same here! It got so much play when it came out, but you never heard it again. I don’t know why classic rock stations won’t play this fun as hell song.
When I finally found it on UA-cam, I almost cried. It was also one of the first songs I searched for. It was my favorite as a kid.

Driving with this? Oh, yeah. My friend and I would cruise a local park (Hines Parks in western Wayne County in Michigan) with music blowing out of the speakers. This song was one of them. We also loved playing the Who and Huey Lewis and the News.
Awesome comment RM!
I was in high school when this was released...such a fun song

This song is "THIS beat goes on" and Sonny & Cher's was "THE beat goes on." Two completely different songs with a similar title.
There was an FM radio station in Cleveland that would play this song and others, the same 5-6 songs every Friday at 5 pm. to kick off the weekend. Loved it!
And the DJ who did that just passed unfortunately, Michael Stanley.
One of my favorite one hit songs from the 80's is David &David Welcome to the Boomtown
The David & David album is great.
Was a teenage kid in 80, living in the detroit area. This song got a ton of rotation here, rightly so! Always a favorite! On repeat on this old man's ipod! Great pick!
Very cool Shawn!
Jamal, thanks for reacting to these Canadian bands. We have so much more to offer music wise than people realize.
Here is a small list of pop/rockin' bands that may catch your attention:
1) Teenage Head - Let's Shake
2) Streetheart - One More Time (GordonYYZ). (This band had numerous Canadian hit songs).
3) Red Rider - 1) Breaking Curfew 2) Light In The Tunnel/Human Race (This band also had many hit songs).
4) April Wine - 1) Say Hello 2) Enough Is Enough 3) Love Has Remembered Me 4) This Could Be The Right One

It's a great song indeed, I was in Jr High school when this came out. It's funny how you hear a song, and it takes you back to that time period for a second or two.
Life was so much simpler back then.

Nice choice for a one hit wonder. Another would be " Eyes of a stranger " by the Payola's
That was my favourite Payolas song until I discovered "Never Said I loved You"
Payolas wasn't a one hit wonder though
Politically incorrect now but "The China Boys"

Not to mention "I'll Find Another (Who Can Do It Right)," "Where Is This Love" and "Here's The World For You."
Or Rock and Hyde's "Dirty Water."
Great Canadian band that fits in perfectly with other classic Canadian bands from the 70's/80's such as: Red Rider, Headpins, Streetheart, Trooper, Harlequin, Chilliwack, April Wine, Rough Trade (from which they stole the wonderful Carole Pope for the rollicking "Never Said I Loved You) ...the list just goes on and on.
