- Established in 1893, Keewaydin is one of the oldest operating summer camps in North America. And while it looks much the same as it did in the early 1900s, merely 20 years ago something major changed: girls were allowed to go ‘tripping.’ As a filmmaker, Hannah Maia was interested in how something established more than a century ago to promote manliness and “roughing it in the woods” could be relevant for teenage girls today. And so, she did what any good filmmaker would do, she joined their expedition.
This is a story about a traditional, slow, strenuous, and all-female adventure. 40 days spent canoe tripping in the Canadian wilderness using leather tumplines, wooden wannigan boxes, hand-carved canoes, and real food cooked over open fires.
From candid interviews and raw footage, reflective moments and internal musings, Wood on Water demonstrates history and tradition woven into the modern teenage girl’s attitude. It’s a story of many threads as it follows the journey of nine teenagers, two guides and a filmmaker on an epic canoe trip through northern Quebec - Спорт
Keep it up Keewaydin! Experiences like these should be the foundations of Western society.
Canoe trippin and learning the old ways builds so much confidence and character in a person, boys or girls doesn't matter. Later in life when these girls have hard times with something, chances are they will look back and realize the hard time is not that bad, nothing like that nightmare portage or the unforgiving wind they pushed through. These trips also connect a person to the real world, not the made up stuff we live in daily. Thanks for putting out this video!
I loved this documentary…it shows that strength, courage, laughter, joy blood, sweat, tears and the bonds of these ‘sisters’ has always carried women through trials and trails, portage and rights of passages. Well done women. Well done.
Love this! An amazing journey. 40 days and 400 miles in a canoe is badass. I hope this video inspires every girl and women to follow your paddle stokes.
I go to the boy's camp in Vermont. Last summer I did a 10 day and 9-day trip. Next summer I will spend 17 days in Quebec and the summer after that I will spend 30 days or so somewhere in Northern Canada. This is a wonderful film!
You go to keewaydin? I go to songa? And it sounds like we are in the same age group
@@jordanbertrand4193 that's cool.
From cannon building to canoe building and wooden furniture, great!
Great documentary about Keewaydin canoe tripping. Awesome to see the tradition still alive and well.
Love this final version. Well done to you and all the girls. I'm so proud of all of them Katie P's mom..Woohoo !!!
I spent three seasons in the seventies at Keewaydin. last trip section A Hudson Bay trip. Best experience of my life!

This is a great film! Well done Hannah and well done girls! We did the bottom 1/3 of this route as part of a trip last summer. Recognized a few sites we also stayed at and some familiar landscapes. Amazing area. Very cool!
Brilliant. Congratulations to everyone who created this programme, and everyone who embarks.
I loved every minute of this film.
I enjoyed watching this movie so much. Thank you girls, you can be proud of what you have accomplished. Greetings from France.
Really great to see this stuff. One thing I never did get about tying the paddles to the thwart for portaging. I've tried it, and it's very comfortable but predominantly I just use a portaging thwart. Since I've only ever fallen while carrying a canoe with a portaging thwart, I can't quite understand how safe or dangerous it might be to fall while carrying one with lashed paddles. In any event, a portaging thwart can be hand-made out of wood just like the overall canoe itself, so it seems like it would be compatible with the keewaydin ethos.
Incredible and beautiful! Tears of joy!!!
such a well done video! and an amazing experience I'm sure!
What a wonderful film! Really enjoyed it!

An excellent video. I really enjoyed it. I just sent a txt msg to my daughters - letting them know I thought they would probably enjoy it as well.
Thanks for sharing!!
portage and paddle, portage and paddle, portage and paddle... This is the Way! The Keewaydin Way!
Girls get it done.
One day I shall achieve this perfection but for now I'm only HDPE on water....lol great video!!!!
Good luck!
Canoes of all types of construction have their place. But there are a lot of reasons paddling a wood and canvas is absolutely amazing! And, a lot of people don't realize that they are 100% able to do serious, remote, long distance expeditions. They are works of art, but they are meant to be used! Being on the water is nice, no matter how.
Interesting…. I made a comment of the unsafe technique of shoulder yoke using paddles for the portage, sticking neck into a box. Comment was removed from your list! Video shows lady with neck stuck and canoe falling to ground. There is a safe way to do this!
what happened to all the empty cans and packaging?
We carry it all out! :)
@@danawilliams1730 perfect!!!! well done.
As a 30-something year old woman, I would love to experience this with other ladies.
Keewaydin does actually offer a short (3 night, 5 day) women's trip in the Temagami region open to all levels!
