the pikemen are great on very flat plains vs cavalry! as long as the enemy doesn't: dismount, have archers, have infantry, have horse archers..
also you need to micro them, also they really only work when the enemy cav has time to gain enough speed, so once the knights either get stuck-in, or are doing short charges...
(They're fairly awful)
In a Vlandian-only playthrough, a small squad can be useful to screen cavalry charges, but they're hyper-niche troops that aren't staggeringly great at the only niche they fill
the least-annoying way to micro them is to make two squads of thin Lines, or a dragged out Square. ideal is to have 2-troop deep line as wide as can be, but they'll need protection at each end.
if the game had like, a "staggered box" formation, they'd be way easier to use.

When commander die they have debuff and run like headless chicken, also loose formation work and they can solo the cav, in other words don't die f3 then wait ( if range cavalry they dead )

It's damn sad how bad spears and especially pikes are in vanilla. If you ever get a wild hair, see the difference for yourself running RBM. Definitely not as realistic as the name implies, but the difference is night and day.

Rbm is great but i think they take the changes to an extreme. Like, swords literally bounce off clothing

Well I don’t expect t5 unit to beat t6 unit but to lose agaisnt the khizeit heavy lancer (t5, probably the best t5 shock cav still) feel terrible for a unit specialized in countering cav

@@tagstergaming4556 yes, but IT requires realistic battles mod. But its really nice, as vlandia i recreated tercio tactics. Mod is just better pikes i think.

I dont know what saddened me the most... Seeing the pike formation not being effective against cav or the wildlings losing... Im a wildling enjoyer and defender, but damn the ai doesnt know how to use them at all
I was so surprised that the wildings lost too! Do you think the formation I used was correct against the cav?
@@tagstergaming4556 maybe... They were to compact... Maybe line or loose formations that are tge same width than the cav charge? But even so, thats good only on the charge. Maybe agaisnt cav the sturgian spearmen will perform better. As a bonus round you in that video you could mix both units (pike and spear) agaisnt a cav unit?

nah, they suck, you use them in mixed infatry groups, should do ok in square formation vs cavalry if they had shielded units to protect them.
