    Wow. Thanks for the upload. I got rid of my goats because everyone said they were going to cause me trouble, and aren't hardy enough for winter grazing. Now I raise hair sheep. They're not as good at it as your goats, but I've been impressed by what they'll chose to eat in the winter. What was going on with that little goat with the PVC taped to it's horns?

      Hey thanks for your comments Joe. Yes winter grazing is not easy and is something a person should ease into to. If you do decide to try it again start with adult wethers that have been adapted to your area. I also have hair sheep called Soay Sheep and I am very impressed on how they get out there and scratch in the snow. But yes I have not had the sheep eat the woody vegetation like the goats do. The PVC on the horns was to keep the goat from getting its head caught in metal fences as some have just the right size to get their head in and not get them back out.

      @@jacoblangeslag7887 I almost bought a little flock of Soay at a very good price when I was starting out, but I was intimidated by how completely wild that flock was. I wish I had them now. I have mixed flock of mostly Katahdins, some Katahdin/Dorper, and a few Barbados. We do some winter grazing, but bring the group back to an inexpensive hoop house for hay feeding when the snow is deep. I'm a pretty new farmer still, and I'm glad there's folks like you out there documenting what you do. It makes a big difference for us greenhorns.

      @@swamp-yankee I used to raise a mix flock of those sheep breeds and nubians and boer goats. We would separate the goats every now and then to supplement with copper. But I think the 2 species compliment each other very well in foraging and grazing overgrown areas

    Really great video, so do the goats still eat the hay if it's damp and on the ground?

    • @jacoblangeslag7887
      @jacoblangeslag7887  4 роки тому

      To an extent but they are picky hay eaters if wet or on the ground compared to other animals.

    What are your plans for dead brush ?

    • @jacoblangeslag7887
      @jacoblangeslag7887  5 років тому

      We leave the dead brush for wildlife habitat from pollinator shelter, places for birds to perch, etc. Over time brush falls over if you are fine with it as the light still gets to the ground and not being shaded out. In some areas we push it in a pile with equipment or let goats, horses or other livestock crush it down and trample in up. Like nature used to. Thanks for the question though as we get that one a lot. I should have addressed that in the video.

    Have you ever had trouble with goats getting poisoned by eating box elder trees
