  • Schumann composed this work in 1838, inspired by his love for Clara. He himself described it as weird and crazy music. In any case, it is extraordinarily shifting and changing, but its breathless diversity hides a profound unity. Yuja is keenly aware of this unity, and, as she does in Chopin's Preludes, does a marvelous job of making transitions from one piece to another, or from one mood to another.
[She omits 14 bars from 5'46'' and 13 bars from 9' 06'', no doubt to avoid too haunting repetitions].

There are no human words to describe this little gigantic woman artist. Besides, how many Gb of memory can this wonderful brain contain?

I always say there are five types of music, folk, pop, jazz, classical and Kreisleriana. Very very few musicians can play Kreisleriana, but this lady can.

E&F, your word "shifting" is spot-on. I think some of that effect derives from suspended chords and arpeggios that shift modes in the middle. The architecture is very Bach-like.
As for Yuja the Great, no doubt her talent would have risen to the top in any case, but her perfect posture and hand position - the pure technique - doesn't hurt. A yogic dance. Before I sit down at the piano, I always spend some time watching her back and especially her wrists and hands, and trying to bring myself there. And then to forget technique and just rejoice in the deep soul of the music.

It is hard to think of many human things as perfect as this. I feel like Faust asking time to stop here at the perfect moment.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!
    (Esaïa, 52,7)
    I'd like to add :
    not only the feet,
    and secondly :
Verbier is not far from Zion

the Kreisleriana consists of approximately 12,000 keystrokes. With 5 misses this is only 0.04% of everything. I wish I could have this margin of error in my life🤣🙏
