  • This is a video of how to position at basic standard roundabouts in the UK. Useful for Mini roundabouts (blue sign) and medium sized roundabouts (kerb in the middle)
I’ve called the roundabouts in this video ‘basic 1’ and ‘basic 2’. This video can be very helpful to learn roundabout positioning in small towns where there is mini roundabouts (blue sign) and medium sized roundabouts. (Raised kerb inside the roundabout)
Roundabouts can get very complicated, but this is the basics of how to position at roundabouts in a regular town. I’ll make another video about very large roundabouts separately.
So - Think of the roundabout like a clock.
Using the 12 o’clock theory makes things easy.
The 12 o’clock theory works around 8 times out of 10 - so if otherwise stated, follow the road markings and road sign to follow the set rules of the roundabout.
8 times out of 10 the 12 o’clock theory is really handy to remember! (UK only)
If the exit you want is at 12 o’clock or before, 8 times out of 10, you position in the left lane to go to these exits. If you were going to the first exit you signal left.
If you were going straight on, you don’t signal to begin with and only signal out if there’s space and time and/or if there is a kerb in the center of the roundabout. This mostly happens if the roundabout is medium size with kerb in the middle. A lot of time mini roundabouts (blue sign and just painted on the floor) are too small to need to signal to leave as your signal doesn’t show for long enough for other drivers to benefit from.
If the exit is after 12 o’clock (so that means 1 o’clock and including 6 o’clock on the right) position in the right hand lane with a right hand signal/indicator and use an exit signal if the inside of the roundabout is raised with a kerb or grass etc or there enough space and time to indicate
So, If the roundabout is a mini roundabout (blue sign, which tends to be painted on the floor with white paint) and very small - you only need to signal when you approach the roundabout if you are turning left or right
If the roundabout has a raised part inside, perhaps made of kerb , grass or something else that isn’t paint, then you will need to use an exit signal to help people know you’re leaving roundabout - this will happen if you are following the road ahead or turning right at a medium sized roundabout
