i served in the Welsh guards and im actually native American Choctaw nation i came to wales at 13 to live with my dad and years later went into the army i can tell you the uk armed forces are the best 😊

I served a full career in the Parachute Regiment serving in 2 Para. During a LRRP course in Germany my 4 man patrol team included 2 Green Berets soldiers. They were absolutely useless. They lacked endurance and found it difficult to carry the heavy load over difficult terrain. During a long extraction one simply sat down on his backside and saying he could not go on….and he was the nominated patrol commander. It opened my eyes to the quality of US troops, although I have also worked with good US soldiers too.
At the risk of sounding a bit American, thank you for your service. You are the best of British.
😊You should have mentioned that the Green Berets were the US Green Berets. I was furious until I got to the end of your post. The Paras are pretty good, they have to be to qualify as a Sister Regiment of the Royal Marines 😉
Well, as an ex para I wouldn’t willingly admit to the quality of the Royal Marines and I expect the same from any ex R Marines endorsing the quality of the Parachute Regiment. Keeping the fierce rivalry going between the two. But, off the record, paras do acknowledge the professionalism of the Royal Marines but we will never admit it. @@johnstableford2553

My Dad was in the Paratroopers (2 Para), in the Falklands
My wife's was in the paras during the Falklands. Told me a couple of stories. Lucky to be alive. He served in Northern Ireland too. Showed me some of his medals and what not he got, aswell a newspaper article from some rescue mission he was a part of too. He's definitely lucky to be alive from some of the things he's told me about. His house though, full of 2 para memorabilia. All over the place 😅

RAF Regiment 2 Squadron is the real 2 Para. Same training, except they do the Fan Dance instead of milling. Much harder. All the RAF Regiment lads who get picked for the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG) are from 2 Squadron.
My driving instructor was an ex Para named Nigel.. He said my driving kept him awake at night 😂 I passed my test first time

I knew a Para and a Marine. The para told me that if you want a mission done with stealth and finesse you send the Marines. If you want the enemies knocked back 20 years then you send the paras. My buddy was a Pathfinder for the Para's. some of the stories he had would terrify you while you're in awe of what you're hearing

Sounds about right. Someone once compared the RMs to a highly trained Malinois dog with excellent agility, finesse and fitness that will tear you a knew one and be gone before you knew it. The Paras by contrast are a highly trained aggressive mixed mutt, tough nut from a bad home who will chew through anything to complete the task. After which they are returned to the kennel immediately and chained up with a sign on the gate “ only to be used in an emergency “. I thought it was very good whoever came up with it.😂😂😂

I have the utmost respect for the ghurkas. Of all the different regiments I came across during my time in the army, they were the most impressive.
The paras on the other hand were just fucking dumb.

The Israeli army says the British Paras (Paratroopers) are the best troops in the world, the US Armies 83rd Airborne Division couldn't pass P Company training, the recruit training for the Paras.

P Company training really isnt that hard, the hardest part may be the Milling.
I watched our armed forces as a kid in the Falklands back in 82 . In particular the paras and marines.that was it for me by 89 i was in the forces myself . And now my son serves. I will never forget even as a boy the pride in my country them men gave me.
@user-lp6nf2px6p I was 15 at the time and I think it's the first time I really understood what being British was as opposed to being Scottish, English, Northern Irish or Welsh. We were in it together and I remember being spellbound by Brian Hanrahans daily & nightly reports and my God the pride I felt that those brave men were our guys.🇬🇧

My wife is a former Swedish Arctic training instructor, She describes the Brits as hard as nails (probably some Viking blood) and the Americans as..the P word and the C word, I remember one time she came from work she said "can we fly their mommys in to get them"

I worked with a huge commando guy, that served in the Falklands. I was the driver. And a parking warden attempted to give me a ticket. Until my man jumped out the van. And chased him around the van about ten times. . I didn't get a ticket 😅👌
We didn’t make an empire without the best forces. British determination at war is insurmountable, our SAS is what all other special forces attain to achieve. Proud to be the best, bar none.

I'll never forget reading a book about the battle of Arnhem between paras and SS troops. It got to a point where SS troops were refusing to go fight the Paras cos of how tough fighter and killers they were... the Paras were surrounded and out numbered, the SS even had armour while the Paras had none!
It costs a minimum of £40k to train 1 British
It costs a minimum of £14k to train 1 USA soldier
The only advantage the US has is numbers but in terms of skill British army is in a league of its own
This is simply because we just don't have the luxury of having huge quantities of service members here in the UK so we kinda have no other option besides focusing on having nothing but the best quality if we want to have an effective military

JT, if you look at the Falklands War, there were sadly young men of 17 who were killed in combat, members of the Parachute Regiment and Scots Guards from memory.
you forgot the WELSH GUARDS - many killed and maimed due to stupid orders to stay on the landing craft , ffs.
in the falklands a group of scots guards ran out of bullets so they fixed bayonets and stormed a machine gun position balls of steel 🤘
My dad got sent to the faulklands post war to "keep the peace", he was also send to saudi for the Gulf war and fixed Tornado jet engines out there.

British soldiers are not allowed to take part in active service until they are 18 years old.
I had a cousin in the Royal Marines his description of the Paras was a Marine with his brains removed they would do anything they were mental.the training is brutal.

Bayonet training is multiple weeks of absolute abuse and torture.
Imagine a school corridor, we were lined up in prone position, the cpls threw buckets of dirt on the ground and we were told to clean it up by crawling over it, while they sprayed us with the fires hoses.
We were soaked, crawling in water and dirt and made to clean it up with our chests and crotches.
That was 2 hours by example compared to multiple weeks of this sort of character building.
By the time we even get to bayonet training our bodies are overworked under rested and in agony. But after this horrid day you start to get a grips with military life.
It's make or break day for many men, many many many men

You can join at 16, the only European country to allow under 18s. You can join the army cadets at 12, which is like a military version of the scouts. The Paras are an airborne regiment of the British Army.
You still can't go near any conflict until you are 18, but yes, you can join up at 16.

JT please consider that these guys are the troops who get dropped behind enemy lines in hot warzones , they are expected to be able to stand against any foe before them with little to no support or resupply and to operate in hostile theatres and to survive. while many will state that special force units perform under the same conditions , which to be fair they do , the para`s are the guys who go and take and hold strategic objectives . huge thumbs up to anyone who chose the military as a career , it is not an easy option by any stretch
Your topic is true but ..British troops haven't been deployed by parachute since ww2....they are shock troops ! But the problem the UK has is the woke politicians won't allow the dog off the leash....the likes of Afghanistan or gulf war was run by American commanders and TV journalists....if you want the job done ...keep the press and any American involvement out of the planning . Paras & royal marines have an equal reputation for a reason .
Just to point out how relevant this is, the last time us brits used a successful bayonet charge was 2011 in Afghanistan by the 1st battalian, The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment (light infantry)
Many nations call it obsolete but its small, light to carry and has a major effect on morale for both sides of the contact. When used effectively the bayonet ensures a level of aggression and unity that enables the user to instill an ungodly sense of fear into an enemy.
was also used in the gulf war of 91. by C coy. 1 Staffords. And yes it’s very effective.

In college we go trained by the military and spent time on base with them, we received training from the Paras and saying it was hard is an understatement it was gopping.
As a British army vet, I also had to make the grass grow, when I told my mum her face dropped.
Never a para, but worked with 2 para in iraq, was fun, unfortunately lost 2 of them.

The worst part, is I found the guy that blew us up on youtube, found the video of his tribute to taliban and aftermath of the vehicles.

All governments are responsible, shrinkage of the British Army has been occurring since the 1950s, the amount of infantry regiments disappearing through multiple amalgamations is proof of that.
If you recall the first gulf war, the BAOR was stripped of equipment and spares just to put one armoured division into the field.
It must be very frustrating for the army having to watch our politicians giving cash and equipment to the Ukrainians.
it`s not what you start a fight with but what you end it with that matters , economics do tend to twist our view of the world a lot , with the tech we have for first strike and asymmetric warfare it`s just not feasible to maintain a standing army of any size , or necessary . i will agree however that some form of armed training would be a good benefit for the security of the nation

My husband did 3 tours in the ghan and Iraq, one of which was with the paras. But one of the things he says prepares us so well is the types of terrain and mixed weather we have in the UK. They could train in one certain area and it will have river crossings, mountains, beaches, coastal hikes and all the weather that can go with it, high winds, heavy rains and sunshine could typically hit during one excercise and they have to be ready for all of them. Most of the training is let’s find some massive hills, get loads of weight on our backs and tab/run it as quick as possible. 😂

lol I just commented to someone else above that i joined at 16 and was trained for a year by a 2PWRR Platoon Sgt. He was super intense and a brilliant infantryman. I didn't know about the last bayonet charge but it doesn't surprise me about it being that regiment.

The Paras are an army regiment. You can join the British military at 16, but I believe they can't be sent to a warzone until they turn 18.

There's a video on youtube which gives an animated look at the practical entry test for soldiers wanting to join the British SAS. It's mindbogglingly tough - and definitely worth watching.
I did my basic Army training at the Guards Depot in the 60's. On completing your first 4 weeks training you had to do a 4 mile March (run) & Shoot including navigating a monstrous 36 obstacle assault course in full kit before firing 20 rounds into targets at 200 yds, which the whole Troop had to compete befor receiving 48 hr weekend pass! Apparently not long before we completed the Assault course a company of US Marines on exchange with a company of Guards failed!

you can sign up at 16 but go to the army collage for further education but also do your basic training in there too I wanted to go that way but had to wait and ended up just going into the normal way at 19 by the age of 20 I was in afghan spent my 21st and xmas there but would not change it for the world !! now I'm 32 and feeling a little bit old now but ill carry on until it makes sense to come out.

@@leonrussell9607ironically, we the 101st Airborne don’t jump out of planes either, that’s the 88nd Airborne. The 101st Airborne Air Assaults out helicopters or perform sling load operations, i.e. delivers military artillery, vehicles, equipment on the battlefield.

If you can find it, I recommend the show Dude You're screwed. Five survival experts and friends (RAF, US Army, Seals, survival historian) send each other to harsh environments with only 100 hours to find civilization. It's fascinating seeing the different styles and techniques that the different forces and backgrounds bring.

We British are humble too the fact the enemy deserves respect,,,so we train more harder and more technical than the others.

might not be many of us but we dont mess about
I'm a veteran who was in the Infantry, the Rifles. We had to tab out to a location, in full kit, weapon and a 40kg bergen, several miles from where the main camp at Catterick was. From there we did the entire exercise for several days and then at the end of the exercise we had to run back to camp again in full kit to get ready to do sword (Bayonet) training. We were all tired, all wet and all hot, then 1 by 1 we did the sword (Bayonet) lane and managed to finish that. Was one of if not the most difficult part of training but also the most exciting and looking back was quite enjoyable...
And yh I have been to Afghan and met a lot of soldiers of different nationalities and a lot of them are good, but I feel our training is just better... Of course I am biased as it's where I did training and where I did my service but even the guys that didn't have the best training, they still stood out and would happily be beside them if shit hit the fan
You want to see what the Ghurkha's go through. Remember my Sargent telling me of an exercise in camouflage and they had to hide in the woods and a Captain turned up and was invited to walk through the woods to see if he could see any. At the end he congratulated the officer in charge as he had not seen any and the officer told him to look at his shoes and when he did he saw little white chalk marks all over them placed by the troops as he walked by.
And the gurkha's too. They're the hardest people on the planet 💪
they have my utmost respect, and it is/was shameful that we couldnt help our brother ghurka;s (i say brother as i respect out military and theirs) and hav/had family there so they are my brothers in arms

JT there is information on the Internet (I can't find the link) that in an exercise 100 Royal Marines were pitted against 1500 US Marines and the US forces were completely wiped out

They also do parachute jumps with busted heels, run on compound fractures and all sorts of other crazy things to finish their training British Paras are supermen.
The British para's are a different breed of people. The stories I've heard from people who've been in the forces, whether they were in the army or RAF. They've all said the para's have a completely different mindset to other regiments.
One in particular was from an old fella who I worked with, who was given the task to fly out to the US and bring back a squad of para's. They found the squad in a bar with US forces and someone from the US army started to take the piss out of the para's. What started as tongue and cheek banter turned very quickly into the whole bar turned upside down. A hardened officer had to then drag the squad out of the bar and onto the plane home.
The Para's are essentially the Parachute Regiment of the British Army. They're the elite infantry unit, the best Para Troopers go on to serve in the SAS (Special Air Service). Which is one of the British Special Forces, arguably the most trained, elite in the world.

That's literally what they are, your statement reads as though "that's not what they are really but for simplicity's sake you can think of them as that." They're ONE of the British Army's elite infantry units but you cannot claim they are our best infantry outside of special forces, we have the Royal Marines who are on par, albeit designated under the Navy as opposed to the Army but both are British Infantry units. Then you have the pathfinders who are a step above the paras but still below the SAS/SBS. The best and most motivated soldiers from across the whole of the British armed forces can try out for the SAS, but there is a large proportion of ex-paras in the Regt for obvious reasons.

@@jimmywenger8979 Well put. Years ago a mate of mine was in 3 Para and went for selection and was basically told he was a nutter when rejected. He took it on the chin and eventually came back to civvy street, no problems. His nickname when deployed was 'Animal'. Selection works.
The thing to remember is that this lad is ALREADY a soldier. He has passed his basic training. This is "P Company" where he is undergoing specialist Parachute regiment training. If he passes this he gets his red Beret. Then he has to complete his actual parachute course to get his wings.
Wrong, he's a Joe, this isnt P-company, he didn't even get that far. And even if he did, you are still a recruit on p-company. Learn before you comment.

This is a few years old now and my brother was a DI at Deepcut/Pirbright Barracks. He took them through basic and passed them onto P company.

I was 17 at Depot Para, you can do service for the Queen wich won't count on your service count as long as you are 18 when you Pass out of training, The Parachute Regiment ( Paras ) are Airborne infantry and were formed in WW2 by Winston Churchill, firstly they were Army Commandos under Combined Operations, they had a motif that had an Anchor a Tommy gun and birds wings, No3 Commando became the Parachute Regiment.
My uncle was a Para and my cousin's bf is a Para, they are army, short for parachute soldiers (or para troopers - parachute troopers). Part of the entry requirement is bare knuckle fighting/boxing each other, it's brutal. Not sure which is worse between this training and the SAS training for different reasons....think i'd rather be chased down by dogs than punch my friend in the face though...

i joined the 2nd para when i was 17 as well were basically special forces but not actually classed as special forces hardcore regiment best days my life
I spent a lot of time with ww2 vets of the airborne forces and commandos and the 21st IPC and have known a lot of paras over the years and they are all amazing but verd hard word and mentally tough people.
Weve been fighting ourselves and others for over a thousand years I'd hope we'd be good at it by now
Paras are awesome, you should see their boxing and their vertigo inducing obstacle courses.
The flip side is so many get knee injuries, they get pushed really hard.
JT take a look at the Royal Marine Commandos, as an ex marine reserve I’m biased.
Thing is, in my experience the soldiers who have taken lives don't talk about it. My grandfather led a raid on an enemy machine gun position in Italy during WW2. Their gunners had taken out half of his platoon so in the dead of night he & two men kicked their door in, threw a grenade up the stairs and followed with their Tommy guns.
As a kid, I read a scrap book from his army career & asked him about it & he said...
"I never saw them, probably a lucky shot."
As an ex 1PARA with 16 years service I can categorically tell you with a straight face having worked with the US's best of the best for many years. These boys you see here are babies! Wait till you meet a seasoned vet like myself.. And I'm sure your delta's and your seals will agree with me when I say we are slightly ahead in skill and mindset. That video of recruits doing bayonet training is probably of the few videos that show how tiring it is but even this doesn’t really capture how utterly demanding it is. I probably did one of the easiest versions of this type of training and I remember being one of the top 3 worst experiences of my life and I have done some horrendous shit. It started with a wake up from the Cpl’s at 0330 in the morning using a fire hose and it finished in the evening with our room, kit and bodies in tatters in desperate need of clean up and rest

You can sign up when you leave secondary school in the UK, so at 16 years old. Army cadets is also popular here, so already at 12 years old your training can start. And the paras are part of the British Army. It is an elite regiment also and supplies many candidates to the SAS.
My uncle served in 4 para, faught in the Falklands. When the Argentines heard the paras were dropping in, a lot of them ran away in terror! Very tough blokes! With a rep to back it up, arguably a special force...
As a brit we are the best trained in the world but we do love our brothers across the pond and they have helped us out number of times and we have with them lets agree that we are the unbreakable together brothers in arms 🇬🇧🇺🇲
This was 1 of the hardest days of my life but it prepared me mentally to deal with bits, it was 18 years ago, done plenty since and still going, but you cant forget your first bayonet training.
Paras are army, 3 full time battalions 1,2 and 3 para or used to be, back in 80’s when i served, 2 were based in the high readiness brigade in Aldershot, used to be 5th airborne brigade now 16 Air Assault Brigade
im former 2para, loved my time in there. training was extremely tough, but its that way for a reason. as for what level we were, its classed as elite infantry, so tier2 same level as normal seals and army rangers on the US side

Went to a army base for Gcse PE the obstacle course was so cool and crossing the water upside down on a wire was so tired but had a lot of fun was a good experience showed how unhealthy I was 😅
