It's a great connection based dance. I find it complements West Coast Swing quite nicely. Between the two, one can pretty much dance any type of music out there.
All those posting outraged comments need to calm down. There are different forms of zouk. Yes, the original term "zouk" refers to French Caribbean music, and the slow, grinding dance couples do to that music. This is a different form of zouk, which comes from Brazil and evolved out of lambada. BOTH forms of zouk are cultural treasures from their respective homes, and have long, cherished histories. Just like there are totally different styles of dance people will call salsa, or hustle, or rumba, or swing, there are different styles of dance that are called zouk. The presence of a Brazilian dance called zouk does not diminish or invalidate the French Caribbean form- and the Brazilian form has been around too long and too established around the world as "zouk" to go by another name now, even though some instructors have tried to change the name of the dance to clear up any confusion. Those efforts don't work, because too many people know and love this dance called zouk.
likeanoldpairofjeans thanks a lot for the explanation. but i have a question. does the name "zouk" in brazilian zouk come from the fact that they used the "caribean zouk musik"? like...why "zouk"?
Every style of music and dance ..or any art...has to have its own unique name that clearly distinguishes it from another. Imagine having a Rock Band play some piece of Mozart! Or, an orchestra playing Reggaeton! How many styles of music are there for Rock, classical, Reggaeton, R&B, Hip-Hop, Salsa, Merengue, etc? Also, not because you may dance Cumbia to Salsa music does not make it another form of Salsa. Not because you may dance Ballet to a piece Balad or Pop song does not change the form of music or style of dance. How about Rock music without guitars? Jazz without Saxophones or Trumpets? Latin rhythms - Bachata, Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia - without the Congo drums? What about Pop music with only brass instruments? Ballet dance with parts of Reggae dance would be called what? Ballet? Reggae? Or, ....? Are there any real & unique Latin dance styles with turns (vueltas)? The real, original dances of Semba, Zouk, Kizomba do not highlight turns(vueltas) except the turns are done in couples. To me, there exist 2 divisions of dancing: dancing to socialize and dancing to perform. The focus is different for each. The former, for the enjoyment of oneself and dance partner. The latter is to perform, to give some presentation for the enjoyment of others....a show. Of course, there is personal enjoyment as well. HOWEVER, TO EACH TO HIS OWN!
@@V21IC when art forms are culturally derived rather than clearly defined by some strict standards organization, the patterns we look for to describe any genre will vary, and when artists break out from a genre, there isn’t always a new word for whatever they created. The rock band Extreme uses Mozart’s Turkish March in their song “Play With Me”. The rock band The Scorpions recorded an album with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (look up Hurricane 2000). When there’s enough of a distinction between two interpretations of a genre and you need to avoid confusion, it helps to add clarifying modifiers such as “traditional Bachata” vs “sensual Bachata” or, as in this case, defining this video’s dance as “Brazilian Zouk” or even “Zouk-Lambada”. But if your culture is more familiar with the form you wish to convey, you don’t need a modifier. This video is about the Brazilian Zouk dance style, which is basically derived from Lambada danced to Zouk music. Yes, the music is Caribbean, but there is heavy Afro-Brazilian influence in the dance.
@@valdemarjoana625nope, that's Semba and Kizomba. Zouk is mostly French Antillean based and yes it is in fact latin too, at least from my knowledg. Haiti has Kompa.

Riaan Taveras Technically, sure, but Latin in the context of dance is usually used to refer to Hispanic cultures or those colonized by Spain or Portugal but not by France like the dictionary definition implies.
really Brazilian lambada renamed lamba-zouk or zouk lambada....zouk is from the French Antilles...just to be factual...but some good movement here so thank you!
I don't know where you learn this dance but it's really different from Zouk dance. You don't show Zouk dance on this video but a kind of Salsa with a slow rythme. You say it like the lambada and it came from Brazil ? seriously? Zouk come from the French West Indies (guadeloupe, martinique, ...), it's a creole dance. It's true that the woman and the man have to dance very close but not like you show in this video. So you should look on others videos how to dance Zouk.
Wtf? This is not zouk! And since when it's a latin dance?? Zouk is a traditional, french creole dance like the kompa from the french "antilles" (west indies) like haïti, martinique and guadeloup.
I'm from Martinique, where Zouk is originated from together with Guadeloupe... this is not zouk at all!!!!! please change the title to not offend our culture!!!
I grew up knowing a type of muSIC/miSIQUE/miZIK called (mi-)ZOUK and MAZOUK. You see the colonized Afro-Caribbean were not Europeans who spoke French but African languages mixed-up over time with French spoke a language which was neither French, Spanish, English, Dutch( Portuguese) nor any African language! What they now spoked was a language/dialect/Creole that was not dependent to that of the colonizers. Nor was it understood by them. It's common knowledge that Africans like their drums. Music made from only drums identifies them. Wherever they went due to world-wide-wailing due to slavery they took their music. Zouk is purely French-Caribbean music played & danced based upon original African rhythms. The singing and chanting were in languages similar but unknown to that of the colonizers. It was a Creole. Hence was born a genre of music that from inception was very festive; it was party time! The rhythm of the music even up today was not designed for use with European languages. Today, we have Zouk music with ADAPTED English, French, Spanish, Portuguese lyrics but their phrasing don't have the same impact. You see, speaking is music. These formal languages are spoken with different rhythms to those of Creole and Zouk music. My opinion based on personal experience and knowledge. Also, I speak other languages.
Nice job but PLEASE CHANGE THE TITLE OF YOUR VIDEO. Your video is not using any original Zouk music, neither original Zouk dance style. First off, zouk music is absolutely not from Brazil. It was born in the 1970s in the French-speaking Caribbean island named Guadeloupe. It became a musical craze that swept around the world in the 1980s, thanks in large part to innovative bands like KASSAV' that played concerts internationally. Artists in several other countries were soon imitating and borrowing from the sounds of zouk. Zouk is also a Caribbean dance style that is, quite logically, danced to zouk music. It is not a performance dance but a purely social one. Zouk has also been used to label an entirely separate dance family that does come from Brazil, derived from their traditional dance of lambada but danced to original zouk music. Further confusion has arisen as new artists have been making all sorts of fusion with zouk, so dancers are often not dancing to true Caribbean zouk music at all, but R&B, hip-hop, electronica, and even acoustic contemporary. As this form has gained popularity internationally, huge numbers of people worldwide have come to associate this word “Zouk” solely with the Brazilian dancing. +Choupinet CHOUPI you guys are both right. Zouk was a trend that took its foundation from Haitian Kompa after most kompa artists fled Haiti to places like Canada, Martinique and Guadeloupe with a more digital sound. While zouk (which really meant - to party) is of kompa decent... it took its formation in Martinique and Guadeloupe as a new and independent style.
As the debate continues please don’t allow the history of the dance to be colonized and usurped from the folks of African heritage that created it. It’s cool that other groups show appreciation but just get it right. Love to Martinique, Haiti and Guadalupe. Folks of European ancestry historically and presently just have a habit of taking from other cultures and claiming whatever was taken as their own to monetize it without fully acknowledging the origin or creator. Just be mindful.
This is unfortunate and sad. Like everyone below has mentioned, Zouk is NOT brazilian. ZOUK IS A FRENCH CARIBBEAN DANCE. This video should be removed as it mis-informs people on the origins, cultural significance and popularity of Zouk. Bianca Spindler, please refrain from your "technically kinda only popular in Brazil." You sound ridiculous and completely ignorant. Visit Martinique, Guadalupe, or any north american city with a french caribbean population and you will see the influence and popularity of Zouk. Montreal, NYC, Atlanta, Philly, LA …..

Bro, calm down, this is called Zouk Lambada ......... Pretty common in Australia too.....But, I agree with your comment about the confusion caused by unclear name. .
Yang Xia Just think about us (People from the french West indies where zouk has been created) and use the complete and good term for other dances
Wtfffff zook is not a Latin dance boy, double check before you write something. Y'all been tripping!
For real
Schibea Pavilus Its a new form of dancing Lambada. Zouk was just a music style that some dancers use to dance the new Lambada. This knew dance has nothing to do with Zouk they don't even dance with Zouk music anymore
Exactly, this is not Zouk.
Although Lambada probably is a bastard cousin.
😆

What are you calling this zouk? Zouk is a dance and a music that comes from the caribbean... What you guys are doing is just salsa...
lytee Some dancers started to dance Lambada with Zouk music and then they decided to call the "new Lambada" Zouk Lambada ,Zouk love or just Zouk, Today they dance with any kind of music and still call it Zouk
yeah but they should not call it zouk neither zouk love, they should call it another way... Thanks for the explanation ;) PS: That makes me think of reggaeton lol :)
it is French creole, its a great dance for people who cant dance, or have no rhythm. kinda of like single time swing or jitter bug. there's no real purpose to the movement and theres no phrasing or musicality.
we all know what happend after that
WTF is this !!!??? def not west indies or french guiana zouk hahaha
Dafaq is this?! This is absolutely not Zouk! Change the name of this video....you can't get a guy with an accent & say "this is Zouk" because this is anything but Zouk!!! An absolute joke.....get the hell out of here
