Great video. I purchased the 40 and am considering the 60 also. Love my 40 but would like extra room for clothing and cooking equipment. Really enjoy your videos.
Thanks mate! This is the only video comparing the two directly and the best look I have gotten into the floating lid design of the 60L bag vs the top section of the 40L bag. This feature hasn't been shown very well yet until now. Are the shoulder straps on the 60L version more supportive and wider? I have been looking for a long time, recently ordered the Peak Design Travel Line via kickstarter, so am excited to get one of these as well for a trip around the world. Ian has done a great job, the only complaint is that they're impossible to view in person as nobody stocks them.
Stephen Browne Hi Stephen, we can’t compete with Peaks retail reach :) but we do have retailers where you can view our gear. You can check out dealer page on the website - two of the main are B&H and Sammy’s. With regards to the straps of the 60 it does have thicker/more supportive straps and belt. Same materials and design but greater depth of EVA. - Thanks Ian
@@ShimodaDesigns Thanks Ian. I do love the bag, have just been holding off until closer to my travel dates, it serves a much different purpose to Peak Designs bag but they're both amazing Kickstarter projects with top thought put into the design, both premium bags that I'm excited to use.
Great review and comparison, thanks for sharing! Please advise on the following: I'd like to pack 150-600 sigma Contemporary, Sigma 18-35 /1.8, Canon 70-200 or Canon 24-105 paired with 7d mk ii. I do need to pack clothes for about a month and I'd always be on the move, traveling on a bike. I'd really like to go for a smaller 40 L bag so that I could take it with me on the plane as a hand-carry. Do you think I could fit all into 40l? Have you traveled with 60l on plane? Thanks!
Hey Thanks, with the 40l I am sure you have room for all the gear you mentioned, and some clothing as well, not sure if a month worth of clothing could fit, depends on how much you need. the 40 l would fit through as a carry on, but the 60l litres full might not go through. I would suggest if you live in a major city, try to see if a retailer carries this camera bag in their store and you can see it in person before buying and gauge if the 40l or 60l is for you. when i travel I use the Shimoda roller for my camera gear in carry on and leave the 40l or 60l empty bag with all my clothing in a checked in bag, and once I get to my destination, I just switch out the core units into the bag pack, you can look into getting 40l for photo gear and some clothing as carry on, and the roller with extra clothing shall you need it as a checked bag. also that depends if you have a place to store it once you reach your destination and only grab what you need for clothing when your bike touring. hope that helps.
@@FadiHage Thanks for such elaborate reply, really appreciate it! I did go around stores in the city and about, couldn't find anything I was looking for. I did think about multiple bags, e.g. one on board carry with essentials and another one for the cargo storage, it's a really good idea, I'll look more into it! The thing is that I do quite diverse photography. For instance, I went to Copenhagen to shoot music events for a month and I used an old model lowpro 150 (which I took with me as a carry on with all my gear and laptop). I had a 15 year old 80 L non-photography hiking backpack (100 bucks) and as I walked out I could just slide camera bag into the hiking backpack and be happy about it, since I didn't need to access my gear. When I went to shoot clients I'd carry the lowpro all around the city while the hiking backpack rested at the place where I stayed. Lowpro received serious beating and had undergone extreme weather conditions and yet kept my gear safe for under 150 US dollars, it still looks brand new despite all the horrors it has been through :D. Unfortunately Lowpro doesn't do any hiking & adventure photography bags, they are way behind other brands, so I looked into Shimoda and F-stop, consequently I'm considering between these two. My next trip would be a few months bike ride across india, capturing wildlife, architecture, streets, portraits and real estate. Having spent countless hours on my research I have found awesome alternatives which are way cheaper than shimoda and f-stop, such as RVCA, Thule, Endurax, considering lowpro photosport 300 ii, Bagsmart. Mentioning those above in case someone else is looking for options. Thanks once again!
Hey, the water bladder I bought it myself and doesn’t come with it, I have a 3 litre water bladder and it fits in the dedicated place for it. And yes there is a whistle with the bag and it is built into the clasp on the chest strap.
When compressed the 60L seems only marginally larger than the 40L. It seems it would be more for the difference in looks one would choose the 40L over the 60L. Am I completely wrong here?
When compressed In looks only, the 60l is a little larger than than the 40l but whats different is the top zippered portion is adjustable with straps and is larger than the 40. You can always stuff items like a jacket between the pack and strapped top portion for quick access. And when full the 60l expanded portion can fit a lot more stuff in it separate from your photo gear compartment. I did another video about much I can fit in the 60l that maybe can help answer some of your questions. Here is the link for that video: ua-cam.com/video/_UrZE4kVt4A/v-deo.html
Fadi Hage - Landscape Photographer thanks, Fadi 😊 You mentioned somewhere in the comments that you mostly use the 40 now, so it must feel somewhat smaller than the 60 even though in reality it isn’t!? Or are you using it because of the looks and/or easier top access to main compartment? I am only getting one and was keen on the 40 but seeing how close they are in size when the 60 is compressed I’m now leaning towards the 60 for the flexibility 😊 what’s your take on that? Thanks in advance🙏
I am using the 40 most of the time, because it is fits exactly what I need for Photography and it does look a bit more polished without the hanging top piece. It is a little smaller though than the 60l doesn’t look it. So for everyday trips and such the 40l is great but there are some days when I would use the 60l if I’m packing more stuff, for example I do a photo walk with a couple of people every month and part of it I need my cooking camping equipment, so the 60l is perfect for that. What’s nice between the two, is changing bags is really easy with the core units. I would get the two bags, and swap out between them as needed. I ended up buying them two, one after the other. When I could have bought them both at once. They also have 30l too, maybe look at getting a 30 and 60, you can configure the bags as you like with the core inserts.
Hey, I would but I don’t have the bag and I would have to order it in order to do that and this time I don’t have a use for the bag. So I would recommend if you haven’t already, head over to Shimodadesigns.com, they released a video about the 30l if you need more info they would have it.
Love the end :) Thanks Fadi.

Hey Nicholas, Yes the 40 is great and the 60 is nice for those days where you might go camping out with your gear. Thanks for your comments.

they are great bags
can you do a review of the new 30L please!
