From 1899 on, Erik Satie started making money as a cabaret pianist, adapting over a hundred compositions of popular music for piano or piano and voice, adding some of his own. During his initial enrollment at the Paris Conservatory, Satie was labelled the “laziest student in the conservatoire” by his instructor Émile Descombes in 1881. known for his Compositional intuitions as a student, Satie lacked the sight-reading and technical skills needed to move beyond the intermediate keyboard classes.
. At the age of six, the young Satie was forced to move to his paternal grandparent’s house upon the news of his mother’s death. There, his grandparents arranged for his first lessons in music. These lessons continued until age twelve, after which young Satie reunited with his father, who had married a piano teacher. Satie then continued his music education with his stepmother and at the age of thirteen, he joined the famous Paris Conservatoire. However, his time at the Conservatoire was not be easy, as his teachers severely disliked his playing style. Satie, dissatisfied with his time at the Conservatoire left it to serve for a year in the army. However, his teachers at the Conservatoire who suggested to him to take up composition this is what made the best of Erik Satie .
It was during this time period of being called “worthless” from visiting instructor Georges Mathias that Satie composed some of his greatest known works, including Les Gymnopédies, whose lack of virtuosic complexity is replaced with simplicity zen-like patience. In 1905, at the age of 40, Satie returned to music school, focusing this time on building “classical” technical skills among students half his age. Great performance of a classic piece of music. I really enjoyed this. Did you know that Satie wrote some impressive novelty pieces? One is called "Vexations" and the instructions are to play it 840 times, which would lead to a performance that's around 10 hours long.
