Every time I see this product I get jealous that I just have an MPC Live but then I look at the specs and realize I've got the best beat machine on the market. The update coming next week makes it even more powerful. However, this instrument looks awesome for live performance and improv. The MPC has a bit of challenge when you want to improv....
I think they're just very ... similarly-different machines. I was thinking about an MPC Live/One instead but went for the 707 because of the synth engine, which there isn't really any competition to within that ecosystem. but the sampling/etc. is definitely more powerful in the Live/One. similar-ish machines but with a really different sort of workflow, as a result
The Sunshine Group funny, I have a Deluge and feel a bit of the same thing. The Deluge beats this thing hands down as a sequencer with fast workflow (for me at least). But I like the many many many sounds on the Roland.
Yeah, the MC-707 seems really similar to a MPC Live or MPC One. But the MPC has more sophisticated song sequencing and multisampling, while the MC-707 has a much more powerful synth engine and effects. It seems like the biggest difference is the workflow though. The Deluge is also incredibly powerful, and more DAW-like. Definitely a good option. Lacks a screen, but makes up for it in sheer power and flexibility. I ended up getting a Digitakt instead, before the current-gen Akai or Roland devices came out, and before the Deluge had an arranger mode. It's okay, but I've spent much of the time since then wanting something else. The Digitakt's workflow isn't great for me, it's mediocre at midi, and Elektron's decision to tie it to proprietary software has artificially crippled it by making some of its best features inaccessible. So I end up using it just as a drum machine, instead of a groovebox.
Have bought the MPC live as well. And actually enjoy the synth plugins that they added a few updates ago. Hope they will add some more in future updates. The only problem I have is that when you have a device that can do so much, it’s not a pick up an play device. That’s why I sometimes still play with my Novation circuit.

Digitakt / tone user here. They went so deep with the engine that suddenly the hardware feels limiting. Looks like a really useful bit of kit able to replace most of your other gear if you dive deep, but there lies the problem - it doesn't look fun to dive into. This screen UI is pure horror to my eyes and the industrial design speaks David Guetta to me:) Just lacks any cool factor which is sad cause I want to like it..
I agree. I own one and haven't considered digging into the engine because of the tiny screen nonsense. I'm thinking of pairing it with a big old midi controller with dozens of knobs to get past that. Also, I'm hoping a community develops around patches to give me a head start.
@@strangersun7721 I've disliked Aira branded gear so far so I'm not sure if the comparison was meant to be a positive one? But it did come with the logo on the box and looks damn close to the TR8s. Either way, I love the 707
To be honest, I didn't like the design of Elektron gear after their black boxes (OT, AR, AK) as well. Wish the MC707 would look a bit more retro sexy instead of carnival, but I think I can live with it.
I’m between the 707 and the octatrack. The 707 seems to do much more and be less complex. That being said, I know people love the octatrack. I just don’t know how much of that has to do with function vs the unquestionable elektron cool factor. Interested in any thoughts about this vs the OT would be appreciated!
Daaaamn that's an awesome video, love the MC707 ! Long time binge watcher of your channel, I bought an OP-Z and now that I see this wonderful presentation, I kinda dream of a DAW-less setup I could use to produce songs. Actually, I don't know if this is the right place to be asking this but, what's everyone thoughts about this groovebox ? I'm hesitant to grab a Deluge but this Roland seems so cool, with a separate FX loop and a more powerful synth engine (and the clip chain seems actually like a huge upgrade) ... Not to mention the cool workflow ! Keep up the outstanding work Jeremy !
Do you need to have an irig pro to record samples from an iphone? Or can i use a usb b to usb c connection and link the 707 direct to my iphone?? Someone please help!!
You can chain clips together, so kind of a song mode. You can also choose to have a sound per clip (drum or tone) not limited to the sound of the track.
Have not seen many your videos in my subscription list lately. Then again I am watching much less YT thane I used to (for the better tbh). But I am glad I saw this one. Keep up the good work :D

Great overview and a brilliant insight into what this box really is. I have a TR-8S, Digitone and Analog4 here and really want to like the 707 but I feel it's slightly too expensive for what it offers and there are some omissions that I find annoying. I'd like to have seen at least one 48v XLR input, and a software editor for the synthesis engine. When I sit down at one of these boxes I really don't feel like getting into a heavy sound design session with them, and that's where I feel Elektron nailed it with Overbridge. It's also a shame that the clip launch wasn't a bit better thought out as it should really have worked a bit more like Ableton Live with scene launching too....maybe. In any case, keep doing what you're doing. I hope the transition to full time Youtubist pans out for you!
I think it does have software editor now. Plus, each firmware update adds 2-3 very useful features. I have the MC 101, which is surprisingly powerful for the price. Doesn’t have access to the synth engine, but you get the same presets (3500ish synth/pcm, 130ish kits, and 716 drum samples). The 101 only has four tracks, but each drum track has 16 kit pieces, and even more if you use an external keyboard.
How much fx/postprocessing is done on the computer for what we hear in this video? It sounds awesome but it definitely sounds like there's some compressor in there at least
Can’t believe Roland asked you to return this but sent Gabe Miller one to keep? No disrespect to him but you’ve been doing amazing tutorials on here so much longer, not to mention your follower count. I don’t understand companies’ motivations sometimes.
@@TB-wvvvw Well, it's a matter of taste, but Jeremy is arguably the better musician. But when I wrote "Mr Groovebox", I meant that Gabe Miller has built his entire UA-cam channel around reviewing grooveboxes, comparing them on a technical and workflow level, and made tons of content aimed at people who are looking for and/or trying to get better at using their grooveboxes. Given how much Gabe has probably driven sales of the MC-101 over the last two year, it's hardly surprising that Roland would want to send him a free 707 in the hopes that it would boost 707 sales similarly and lead to 20+ original videos by Gabe. That clearly would never happen if the device was given to Jeremy instead. Hope that makes sense.
Brains makes music. If you don't have ideas, no gear will help you. Anyway, buying and trying significantly cheaper boxes such as MC-101, Electribe or Circuit makes more sense - you will not splash a lot of money (you can buy second hand too) and learn what these boxes do. In worst case scenario it will serve as a toy for many years to come.

He is right but wrong. You see sometimes your goal is not clear and some machines helps see your goal that's it, so yes some machines can spark ideas. It will not make you Dr.dre but it will help you to enjoy the journey.

This screen UI is pure horror to my eyes and the industrial design speaks David Guetta to me:) Just lacks any cool factor which is sad cause I want to like it..
yeah, its weird having what amounts to a workstation engine in a groovebox, but the versatility is undeniable.
I agree. I own one and haven't considered digging into the engine because of the tiny screen nonsense. I'm thinking of pairing it with a big old midi controller with dozens of knobs to get past that.
Also, I'm hoping a community develops around patches to give me a head start.
Good observations. In other words, "It's a Roland Aria style device".
I wish the direct input to the pads could be selectively output to an external controller's standard keyboard.
Good playing
Great review and walk through. Best I’ve seen.
This video coming the day before mine hopefully arrives in the mail.
I’m between the 707 and the octatrack. The 707 seems to do much more and be less complex. That being said, I know people love the octatrack. I just don’t know how much of that has to do with function vs the unquestionable elektron cool factor. Interested in any thoughts about this vs the OT would be appreciated!
I can't stand the life-sucking antiquated tiny-screen menu diving on the Electron stuff... There's no 'cool factor' in any of it...

So freakin badass
First track sounds very Com Truise inspired. Nice.
Great video! I wish every machine had 2 shift of function buttons, one on each side :D
Do you need to have an irig pro to record samples from an iphone? Or can i use a usb b to usb c connection and link the 707 direct to my iphone?? Someone please help!!
Is it because the sound off my phone needs to be turned into midi before it hits the 707 ? i'm slightly confused
You can chain clips together, so kind of a song mode. You can also choose to have a sound per clip (drum or tone) not limited to the sound of the track.
Musicians sell gear, this guy is a musician.
Excellent video and tutorial, got some great tips. Look forward to seeing more of your videos!
Have not seen many your videos in my subscription list lately. Then again I am watching much less YT thane I used to (for the better tbh). But I am glad I saw this one. Keep up the good work :D
Really cool, thanks!
very good tutorial :-)!! great job
Nice! Looks fun once you get the hang of it. Can you program it to have odd time signatures?
What a notification to receive
Hey ! Very good video! DO it have any FM sound function ?!
Synth engine on the 707 or a minilogue xd? I really love my synth but I’m really digging the groove boxes.
Would you say this occupies the same space as the Synthstrom Deluge? Is there any value in using both, or would it be more of an either/or situation?
You make a decision on this?
YEA RIGHT. WE ARE THINKING OF GETTING THIS. SHARING LOAD BETWEEN THE TWO AND HAVING THIS MORE SPECIFIED FOR DRUM GROOVES
. . . OOOPS SORRY ABOUT THE CAPITALS @@aquaticborealis4877
man, I was dancing in the house to your demo :)
Great job Jeremy and thanks. Is there a way to save your fav sounds/presets as FAV's?
How many parallel running drum sounds can you put on one drum track?
It has got scene launching. I agree on the missing XLR. That would have been nice
Yes, apparently the Zenology Pro software can export to this device, which is pretty cool
@@BluffMunkey how it is possible?
I want the intro song in my soundtrack to life please 😅
Long ago. How does it compare in todays market??
How much fx/postprocessing is done on the computer for what we hear in this video? It sounds awesome but it definitely sounds like there's some compressor in there at least
Can’t believe Roland asked you to return this but sent Gabe Miller one to keep? No disrespect to him but you’ve been doing amazing tutorials on here so much longer, not to mention your follower count. I don’t understand companies’ motivations sometimes.
To be fair, Gabe Miller is Mr Groovebox, and the MC-707 is a groovebox.
Thanks for your Review! Curious what kind of cable you are using here?
usually monoprice
Can you adjust the "attack/decay" on sampled sounds/chops? (i would assume you can?)
yeah
Hi there I've been using music apps on my phone but they get old quick, I'm guessing you dont get that from a groove box like this?
Brains makes music. If you don't have ideas, no gear will help you. Anyway, buying and trying significantly cheaper boxes such as MC-101, Electribe or Circuit makes more sense - you will not splash a lot of money (you can buy second hand too) and learn what these boxes do. In worst case scenario it will serve as a toy for many years to come.
@@alicaramba7680 to late we bought a 404. You speak the truth but in a harsh way. At the min we live in Cambodia and these things are hard to find. Second hand or brand new. We had to order in the UK and get it posted. It's been in customs nearly a month, arhhh
We have brains and Ideas
He is right but wrong. You see sometimes your goal is not clear and some machines helps see your goal that's it, so yes some machines can spark ideas. It will not make you Dr.dre but it will help you to enjoy the journey.
Does this support resampling of internal sounds? For me, this is a make or break feature of anything that claims to be a sampler...especially if it's got a rompler packed in with it...
Yeah I think so
Your "generic bullsh!t" is my awesome groove when I watch you on my (stationary) bike 🙃😁🤩 thank you!!
