  • I bought this M38 Carcano way back in April but haven't been able release a video on it until now because I was waiting to hear from RTI Customer Service first. This is a WWII Italian Fucile Modello 38 from Royal Tiger Imports. Of course like most of their Milsurps coming out of Ethiopia it's in pretty rough shape which I expected. What I didn't expect was for it to be missing hardware and have a bore that looks more like a rusted out musket than a rifle. I ordered a standard grade rifle but it turns out I was apparently sent a C-Grade rifle by accident which was half the price of the regular grade I paid for. After months of going back and forth with RTI customer service they finally got the issue straightened out and agreed to give me store credit for the difference. They also offered to do a full refund but I declined because I've already found a replacement barrel for it.

    Man, after my first and only purchase with them, I knew I’d never give them a dime ever again. Surprised you keep going back. I found a bunch of good condition 38’s at my LGS well under 500. They’re out there for good prices if you look around a bit.

    • @ReadinessReviews
      @ReadinessReviews  2 роки тому +4

      Unfortunately I don't have a LGS that is even worth going to. I could have paid more for a much better rifle on GB or something for sure. I doubt I'd find an early M38 with the original handguard like this anywhere else so it's not a complete loss. I'm still on the hunt for a better condition shooter though. I'd really like to find one is 6.5.

    A customer ot the gun shop I work for transferred in a k98 ethiopian contract mauser. He paid $999.99 plus tax, shipping and transfer fee. He had me go through it once it arrived. I was not impressed. The bore had no rifling in the last 12 inches of the barrel, and the barrel looked like a sewer pipe overall. Stock was badly cracked, and all bluing was long gone. Extensive pitting overall but especially under the wood line. It looked like it had been wire wheeled as any markings and serial stampings were obliterated. RTI gave him store credit after 6 to 8 weeks of hassle. I looked at the site at what was advertised and the example rifle was beautiful. What was received was no longer a rifle, just a really expensive club. A rusty sewer pipe attached to some firewood. I collect milsurps and ive bought many project rifles and restored them, but there has to be a foundation. There was nothing salvageable on that rifle, plus its wasnt advertised as a project but a complete serviceable rifle.

I pretty much accepted paying the extra money for knowing exactly what condition a firearm is going to be in. Classic seems to have good customer service, Ive returned stuff though them before.

    Dang that is one rough gun. I occasionally consider rolling the dice with RTI again, especially since there’s at least some value in parts guns. In fact sometimes there’s more value in the parts than a complete gun is worth. I occasionally dabble in de-sporterization so a donor gun often seems like a good idea... but if that’s how rough many of them are these days, it’s not even worth it from that angle either. Great review in any case, thanks!

    I contacted RTI multiple times concerning an M.95 Steyr Mannlicher Rifle, but they never responded. Then I emailed Uli Wiegand directly via his email, and surprisingly he was very nice and quick to respond, but after almost 2 months I once again still haven't heard anything back. Concerning the surplus quality, I don't believe there is much they can do about that, but that's why integrity in service is so important. BTW Great video!

      I don't have a problem with them selling rough condition rifles. I'm glad they are tbh. I would just like to see the quality control a bit better. If a rifle isn't a shooter it should be known before purchase and the price should reflect as much.

    I ordered an m91 from them earlier this year. It was in good shape. I ordered a second one and it was definitely their b grade as the stock was cracked all the way through with an old repair made, bayonet was loose, and the trapdoor was bent which prevented it from closing. I called them up and they swapped it out. Ordered an Enfield from them as well last year. Bores on all 3 rifles were nice just didn't like that the second m91 was even shipped as a B grade.

      If yours is 6.5 I doubt it has the long handguard like this one. Only the very early 7.35 rifles will have a handguard like this one. That bayonet is definitely a huge bonus. They go for almost as much as the rifles at this point.

'Garunteed to Grow in Your Yard...' the Garuntee was Great, in small print it said that you didn't get a refund, you got 'replacement'. In other words, if you bought their grass and it wouldn't grow in your climate, they replaced it with More grass that Wouldn't Grow. What a Bargain!

    This is a great example of why I don't understand you bashing Hunters Lodge...
    That is an expensive piece of garbage from RTI. I also will never give Classic firearms of Indian Trail another dollar. The rifle they screwed me over on had a good bore. Unfortunately the entire weapon was bent/twisted to the right. It looked OK at first but when you sighted straight across the top, it seems that it was run over by a 10 ton truck. That was at a gunshow and they fussed and bitched about not wanting to give me a refund! Thankfully I got it on a Saturday and they were still in town when I discovered the damage. I wonder how many people bought one on Sunday and by the time they discovered the issues, the shysters had left town.
    Military Surplus has always been a bit of a crap-shoot but at least with Hunters Lodge the investment is low.
    RTI wants nearly a grand for every raggedy piece of rust they sell. Classic is about the same.
    Ya'll Take Care and Good luck! -John

    • @ReadinessReviews
      @ReadinessReviews  2 роки тому +1

      I didn't really bash Hunters Lodge. I talked about the experiences of others and I documented my own experience which I was satisfied with. Any company that doesn't give you a picture and description of the exact rifle you are buying is always going to be a dice roll. I'm not a RTI or Classic fan but I will still roll the dice every now and then for something I want in the collection.

      @@ReadinessReviews I agree about it being a crap shoot. I have bought a lot of unseen firearms from a number of people but I only do so when the price is very low.
      Good rule of thumb is if the amount is equivalent to what you would bet in Vegas, go for it. Most all of the things I have heard about hunters Lodge are that they are slow. They are but you get a good product for a cheap price. Some people expect NOS for 200 bucks and those days are gone. Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John
