The 2021 Infiniti QX80 is Large Capable Luxury | MotorWeek Road Test

- It wasn’t that long ago, that if you wanted a big capable utility vehicle, you had to settle for a bare bones utility vibe. But that all changed in the 1990s with the explosion of luxury-branded SUVs. Now the Infiniti QX80 was late arriving on that scene, but it has evolved into one of the best examples of the concept. So let’s see what changes for 2021.

I have friends who an early second generation model. In fact, theirs is still called a QX 56. It has been a great vehicle for them. I am always impressed with it. It is an AWD model.
Infiniti really struggles with naming things, whether models or trim levels. Ridiculous name or not, this has an appreciable improvement of luxury over the Armada's top trim.
Ian Clancy
Agreed. G20, G35, G37, J30, Q45 all made perfect sense. G37 became Q50/Q60. In what category did the Q70 compete? Nobody remembers because a Q70 was practically indistinguishable from a Q60 which itself was poorly named. Infiniti has no brand identity.
I love the qx80 this and the lx are legends I love them
I’ve been asking for a Retro Review of a 2010 QX56. MW finally came through!!
🤣
Hahah
That's the best vehicle Infiniti makes. Bulletproof silkiness. Great SUV.
Plagued with torque converter issues, hpfp leaking and washing oil off timing chain causing it to need a chain replacement. Oh and the depreciation is fucking NUTS on any Nissan product especially Infiniti. Nooooo thanks.
@@sideburns2009RepairPal rates the QX rather well…Low repair costs
0 to 60 in 6.3 seconds is not bad for a big boat like this.
interior is nice,, in a 2014 Infiniti Q50 kinda way 😶
Today Infiniti introduced the 2022 QX80 with a new infotainment system 🚙
Infiniti already released their 2022 QX80 with minor change
My boss has one identical to this I wash it regularly. Those 22 spoke wheels are a major pain
I found a special product made by Maguire’s that makes wheels very easy to clean. It’s prayed on and left to set. Once the spray turns purple, after about 3 mins, it’s supposed to be sprayed off with a high pressure car wash sprayer. The bottle says to NOT let the detergent (or whatever it is) to dry before spraying it off. Works like a charm. No scrubbing required, although I’m sure if it’s really bad it wouldn’t hurt to scrub it a little. I’ve never had to though. I’ll spray it on my Jeep’s wheels before going through a drive-through car wash, letting it set for 3 mins or so and then the car wash sprays it off and polishes for me. It always comes out flawless.
I’ll also spray the Turtle Wax-brand bug & grime remover on the bumper and lower cladding on the sides, as well as behind the wheels where dirt gets kicked up and the side mirrors. After that product has set for 5 mins or so, scrub it lightly with the car wash scrubber and it removes that bug grime and road grime very easily. I suppose both of these are like pre-treatments, but they sure do help make it easy work and helps to deliver a better result than what I get when not using them.
@@Cleaning_Hero good tip I'll be sure to try it
Infotainment finally a tad updated. Would get this beauty big time
They Ride real smooth
0:25 I'm leasing the exact same model!
Please, if Nissan was serious they would put in the far superior 9-speed automatic transmission. And they would get a better stereo than what they got from Bose
The size of the sunroof on such a big car is pathetically small.
The last Pajero (which is now dead) had a much bigger sunroof than this.
0 to 60 in 6.3 sec is pretty good for its size
Infiniti just updated the infotainment to a 12in display for the 2022 model...
Amazing!
Annnddd, for those living in the US looking for a truly capable bare bones off-road utility vehicle we have to settle for bloated, land yachts that are the envy of the country clubs and marinas! That you will have paid off by the time your 13 year old graduates from college! We only get the over-optioned mall crawlers like the Wrangler, 4-Runner, or the new Bronco for "off-roading", while other parts of the world can still get the 70 series Land Cruiser.
Hoorayyy
Amazing John is still the host👍🏻
I was waiting for the braking distance figures but I can't find them anywhere did they skip that here?
about 1000 feet in that big boy
Infiniti is trolling at this point
I get 21 mpg on the highway with mine doing 70-75 mph.
Why this one hasn't received thr new infotainment system like the 2021 Armada?
It has for the 2022 model year
Oh look a Retro Review from 2010.
They say you can't teach a old Dog new tricks, this thing needs to just stop now and start with a clean slate
This body style has been around since 2010 wow.
Changed in 2018
This model is oooooold.
Often overlooked, one of the few reliable Nissans.
Is base on patrol and armada
The last living dinosaur. No doubt it is big, very premium and other modern features.
This seems like a 1989 old school vhs tape review. Wtf
6.3 seconds, wow
i remember my motha got one of these 10 years ago and its still the same lol
buy it and expect huge deprecation greater than most in it's class.
Infiniti could do a new-gen QX80, which should be completely differentiated from the Nissan Patrol/Armada, which should also await a new-gen model.
Nissan does not have the budget to develop an entire plat form just for the QX80. Simply put they don't sell enough of these vehicles to justify the development costs behind such a pursuit. If anything it makes sense to share the underpinnings of all vehicle between Nissan and Infiniti while differentiating them through styling, materials and options.
Wtf it’s 2021 and sht still look the same
" It wasn’t that long ago, that if you wanted a big capable utility vehicle, you had to settle for a bare bones utility vibe. But that all changed in the 1990s" 30 years ago IS a long time ago!
Very confusing how they managed to make the dashboard much worse looking than the same model’s dash in 2011 with its wood inlay and a clock. The new Q50 all screen dash looks horrendous.
I thought it is a Retro Review…
This thing is faaast!
Imagine this rebadged as a Lada
Stupid 2nd row center console should be optional. We want a pass though for passengers
makes for a nice rental car. Infiniti just needs to call it quits.
Technically.. it's always been based on Armada.. then the Armada went from Titan based to Patrol based... 😅 So first Titan based then Patrol based...
Escalade better watch out😏
Is this a joke?
@@billyshannon6454 bro the Escalade is top of the line no doubt but something like this Infinity that cost $40k less with the Escalade reaching over $100k this Infinity offers some fine luxury & comfort😎
@@PhillyDee215 the QX is clunky on it's feet and wrapped in cheap leather that quickly degrades. I'm a private chauffeur and have driven both on a regular basis... The Escalade has nothing to worry about. The same 5,000 people a year will continue to buy (lease) this overpriced Armada.
@@billyshannon6454 agreed👍and i have a 08' Armada so I know 1st hand what they offer😏
Not quite as ugly as the original . . . but close. Very close.
Sensory Overload
Got rid of the Rococo styling. Still a barge, it is much better looking and inline with their current design themes. It's just old and lagging behind. Simply holding on.
Dated
John Davis slurring his words a bit..
Why even review this? Just use a 2013 versions lmao
Why would anyone need a ridiculous vehicle like this? People just loving blowing their hard earned money.
Because, like you said, " it's their hard earned money," not yours
Infiniti is finished sadly. This is a great SUV .
It is even here in the UAE lmao. The Y62 Patrol, Platinum and Nismo versions are just better than the QX.
They even look better than the QX imo.
How are their finished .the new 2022 qx80 is very good plus the new qx60 so their are not finished
@@ekgcanadianenthusiast9961 half of their lineup is a decade old. They shot themselves in the foot by changing their naming convention seven years ago was the death knell. Some INFINITI dealers are going out of business or are merging with Nissan dealers, reducing their footprint.
Nope
Save some money and buy the armada , Nissan is killing the Infiniti brand!
Gees, the exterior design of this has aged as well as my dirty underwear.
Yes Buffy let's go drive to the lake house in the new but classic zqwx8o lmnop with 20 speaker Bose we will listen to sports radio on muahhaha
I still don't like the exterior design
I love it
I think it looks great in person
Frankly the Patrol looks better.
As a used car though Infiniti is a good deal.
Depreciation is harsh on the QX80. I've seen 2020s going for $41500 with low mileage. For this price point, might as well go Escalade, Suburban, GMG Denali, Navigator, LX 570 and Land Cruiser. They'll hold their value better.
Good luck finding a land cruiser lol
Land cruisers are the stuff of myth and legend.
Please, not Suburban = weak engine. Mine just crashed at only 115k
GMC, Escalade and Suburban..lol. Yeah, they're nice, the first 36,000 miles 😅
looks pretty girly
Soccer mom's SUV
Certain people will believe and buy anything. Does it have a high lift over John, for the 1 bag people carry in these huge trucks? 👎
QX80 Compete with the Jeep Grand Cherokee l Summit Reserve And Grand Wagoneer Lincoln Navigator Cadillac Escalade

Unreliable gas guzzler.... New??? It still looks 20 years old with refinished headlights... Highly disappointing
Its definitely a gas guzzler but not unreliable
@@scott8238 Nissans are pretty unreliable.
@@basshead. The Armada and QX80 are two of the most reliable large suvs you can buy.
@@clarda1 Good joke, mate!
@@basshead. id suggest you do some research.
This car is a JOKE. 2021 model with an Interior from 2011, and a price from 2031.
I get it, and I don't disagree with on the archaic aspect. However, the 5.6 liter is very reliable with few known issues. One of the byproducts of being around for so long is all of the kinks have been worked out. And for being so old (the 5.6 V8 is ancient by today's standards), it still pumps out more horsepower and more torque per liter than the vaunted HEMI 5.7 V8.
The V8 alone makes it worth it
Doesn't get much uglier than this
Gross. I’ll take a Land Cruiser over this dumpster looking oaf any day.
Lol good luck spending 50k more and hard to find.
need new tranny and turbo charge engine. Everything else fine ...............
These boats are literal trash.
Whys that
Definitely not. Smooth sailing all day in these.
This still doesn’t hold a candle to a Navigator or Escalade
A Zaz built in the Soviet era is better than anything from Lincoln or Caddy. The Infiniti may be subpar and ugly, but I’d take one over those worthless Yank tanks.
@@ianyeh75 yea sure buddy
@@ianyeh75 This is the US though so he is kinda right.
Outside the US, ofcourse what you're saying is true.
Except the QX80 is reliable
Volvos are safe.
BMWs are the benchmark in Executive Sport Sedans (or were)
Audi’s are understated and teutonic
Lexus is precision built and bulletproof reliable
Mercedes Benz is the ‘Standard of the World’
What is Infiniti? Nobody knows and neither do they.
😊
That ugly thing is fast to bad it so f ugly
