hi Derik i can't wait to be in your shoes...i just want to say that you are one of the rare traveler who don't show your face 90% of your video....most of them are in the meddle of the screen when they cross a market or near a beautifull view or anywhere they go with most of the time stupid comments...keep enjoying your life my friend ]cause] it goes very fast and the world you visit also change very fast ! I was in Thailand in 1985...i cry when i see what tourist did in so little time ...with their I phone internet & our money NEVER GET OLD MY FRIENDS !LOVE TO ALL !!!!
Wow it’s a great video. I really enjoyed watching it. I love when you play Lao music while you were having lunch with the captain and alms giving. Khob Chai 🙏 for documentary my beautiful country (Luangprabang, Laos 🇱🇦).
Pakbeng is such a small place. Me and my girlfriend stopped at the same Hotel about one year later (January 2020). By then the terrace was complete and it was a beautiful place to relax.
Excellent posting thoroughly enjoyable in watching over top top audio / video description conversation is at the right speed earned FULL MARK 10/10 Bravo keep it up until next time
Woo. What Tha amazing border of Thai-laos. I love your video because of once I was a child I was growing up in Thailand and remind me of everything. Thanks for sharing
i remember doing this in 2008. no bridge. the thai border was just a small house 😂😂😂 and need to use a raft to get to the lao side. the lao immigration was less than 30 sq.m. shack. hehehe then we walk to where the slowboat is located. got our baguette. bought those butt cushion *worth it. *some* backpackers sitting at the back end of the boat started smoking weed. drink beer and watch the sunset. there was no advance hotel booking back then so we scramble to find a cheap hostel to sleep. after dinner, expect some locals offering you drugs from cannabis to opium. next day (Dec.24) were back on board. around 4pm.. our boat broke down in the middle of no where and have to dock. no electricity. no wifi *duh* some of the old tourist started hoarding the food and drinks. young backpackers started to bond even more. we bring out whatever food we have in our backpacks.. crackers, canned tuna, instant noodles, etc. that's our christmas dinner. all chairs were placed on top of the boat for so the old people can sleep comfortably. the young ones pull out our sleeping bags and set up a bon fire on the river back. the next day, our boat got fixed and we sail our way to luang prabang. most of the tourist on the boat bonded really well as we bump on to each other every now amd then as we explore luang prabang. we spent christmas together and even travel together as we go down to vang vieng and vientiene. good times!
The pronunciation of Laos (Laos is the name of the country and Lao is what the people and language are called), Phousi Hill (ph=p sound), (pronunciation Kuahhhhhng Seeee) Waterfalls and others were making me cringe since (correct pronunciation) Luahhhhhng Prabahhhhhng is a place I call home, but the video is BEAUTIFULLY photographed and constructed. Loved it.
Hi Derik, a really useful and engaging video. Any idea whether slow boat operators have restarted services now? We are planning to cross over from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang when we visit the region this November. Have been looking forward to this for a long time. Will help if you could share some pointers on this.
Thanks! Since the services are there for locals that live along the river too I think they should be running. The border crossing was pretty easy, but I don’t know if it’ll be the same now. Make sure you have any documents pertaining to vaccinations ready just in case. Go early to save a good seat and go into town and grab some snacks. You could book your accommodations in Pak Beng beforehand, but we had some cell service on the boat and booked on the way. I’d also say get enough cash for the first few days upon crossing.
Cheers for thsi very well produced Video , ill never get to this level lol , This is a route im looking to take as part of my SE Asia tour at the end of the year , thanks for all the details , step by step , im guesing as it wasnt mentioned once that this was Pre covid ? So some things might be slightly changed up
Thank you! Currently working on videos for Easter Island 🗿, Morocco, & Bali/Lombok. Also I’ll have some content from the American Southwest coming in April.
Thank you! I’m currently finishing up a month on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I’ll be editing videos again in November to release throughout the winter.
Im on Koh Phangan rn but taking the ferry and plane to bkk tomorrow and than by night train to nong khai, next to the boarder to Laos. Looking forward to explore this beautiful country 🇱🇦
Great video mate! Was this actually filmed in Jan 2021? I plan on doing this soon, and I didn't know if it was still running as before, or tourism there was going this well.
Oh sure cruising the Mekong looks fun today, but it sure as hell wasn’t in 1969, while being fired upon when patrolling in a PBR! I don’t think I’d have fun on that ride, I’d be to busy keeping on eye on the river bank for an ambush! 🎖💜♠️🪖🇺🇸
Hi there! I'm looking to do the slow boat this November. Did you have to take your malaria pills during this journey? I would suspect being close to the river is a higher risk of being bitten?
Hey there, hope this comment finds you well! I'm headed to do this cruise in the coming month and we recently read that in order for us to be considered leaving thailand we had to fly visa wise. Did you come across any trouble with leaving thailand and continuing your travels this way?
Thanks for reaching out! Nope, I didn’t have trouble crossing the border from Thailand to Laos. They did the normal procedure of checking and stamping my passport. Then after Laos I flew to Vietnam with no problems. I haven’t come across anything that say you have to leave Thailand a certain way for it to count as leaving. “Starting October 1, 2022 until March 31, 2023, travelers will be allowed to stay for 30 days or 45 days without prior approval of a Thai visa.” - www.thaiembassy.com/thailand-visa/thailand-visa-latest-update Be sure to check if your country is included in this (if US then you’re good). I was just in Thailand again last month and I’m sure if I was in their system for a visa violation they would’ve told me. From my reading you can enter by land 1 additional time to extend your stay and by air up to 6 in any calendar year. If you come across where it says you have to leaving Thailand a certain way please forward it to me @DB_TRVL on Instagram. Hope that helps.
@@DBTRVL Thank you SO much for this. Really really helpful. We saw the free visa for 45 days, we're from Canada so we're super pumped about that. Thanks again!! happy travels!

hope Laos can develop beyond being yet another cheap and exotic destination for western backpackers
Sour grapes hardly ever helpful. We don't know what people in other countries want or need.
Many people of the west just want Laos to stay as a cheap holiday destination
@@kwu6456 Its going to take a while, currently the big question mark is how much is China going to rape Laos.

Thank you! Most of it was shot on the Sony A7III and GoPro Hero 7 Black.
Great video! Hoping to do this trip next year. How was the bathroom situation on the slow boat?
They have western toilets using bucket force to flush! Hope that helps, it’s a amazing trip!

Actually, it was filmed in 2019. Those boats help the local people travel on the river too. That makes me think they’d still be running now.

My gfs mom uses the Mekong to irrigate their farm. We use well water to flush. I drink beer Lao but not the water. Go figure.
Good video, but the name of the country is Laos, not Lao. Lao is an adjective describing the language and the people.
It looks like you had a lot more space in the boat on day 2. Was this the private or public boat?
It was public. We shared it with other tourists and locals.
