- I performed this on november the 9th of 2013. Until now, this is my record. I don't know if I'll be able to beat it again (for the moment at least :) ). I hope you'll enjoy watching this, even if I committed some mistakes ^^'
I recorded it using a real console (SEGA Megadrive 1 with a Master Converter) plugged into a XRGBmini to get a 720p display. The Acquisition video card is a Blackdesign Intensity Shuttle USB3.0

for me seeing this video just made me think that is MORE huge than though in my childhood haha
that is what i was thinking I have been re-playing the arcade version so watching this is a little jarring. I played and beat this version so much when i was a kid. I hated the jumping corridor with the moving blocks cause wonder boy had a chance to get stuck in the wall on the last jump. It was a instant game over too as i never could get unstuck lol.
Those moving blocks were a glitchy pain. Awesome game though, one of my favourites 😊👍

That's because your perception as a kid was a lot different. As a kid this game was like impossible to beat. Now because the perception of this being small, I can beat this game easily.
this game means so much to me till today. spend many great hours at the age of 7 with this game

Classic '80 randomness with the final boss being from another dimensions that has zero connection with the rest of the game xD But hey I liked this game anyway when I was a kid ahah
Now imagine in days before internet, how should you ever find your way through the labyrinth at the end? I'm a fan of the arcade version, but this is very nice too. Very well played!
There's guide books you can buy. Also if you get the bell if you know how that'll guide you for the last level. What I did for the last level was write things down on the direction I had to go on a piece of paper.
I get your point of how easy it is to research things through the internet. Where as before the internet you actually had to work and maybe it was impossible to solve things.

What? You have total dominance of this game.I find this game much harder than BATTLETOADS back then, on battletoads i could reach the ends levels and on WB Monsterland i couldn't even reach stage 4...
Are you serious? Battletoads is way harder than this game. This game is not that hard once you know what you are doing.

thanks for this, one of my early childhood games. That last castle is ridiculous, not sure how you are supposed to get cues where to go..
upsyndrome At the end of the long turn-in quest, get the bell. It'll ring when you're going in the right direction. Or the wrong direction. I can't remember. The instruction manual says.
It rings on the right direction, though i never got it. At some point i remember the ways.
Don't worry about the last level. If you never played this before you'll die way before that.
@@consequences It rings when you go the right direction but it only rings like at that part where you change the screen.
This is really impressive. I can't speed run it like this & beat it. I have to do everything. So it takes me 35 min to beat this game.
Me and a buddy used to play the everloving crap out of this in the arcade back in the late 80s. We'd compete on points, though. If my memory still works past 50 I think we usually ended up on three-something-million points and it took about 50 minutes to beat the game. Good times. :)
So we all remember the original wonder boy, was this the sequel? and then wonder boy 3 the dragons trap thereafter? i couldnt help but notice how the end castle and dragon ties in with wonder boy 3 and in that game the mecha dragon turns you into the lizard man, i like how they seemed to make the story tie in so nicely xD as i child i used to wish i owned this game, it was the only 1 of the 3 which i never played and regretted missing it. Thank god for youtube and you guys xD

Yes, and then Wonder Boy V Monster World III, and then Monster World IV, and then there's another arcade game whose name eludes me in there somewhere too.
And Dynastic Hero on PC Engine is just Wonder Boy V Monster World III with a different paint job.

14:39 is the part I hated as a kid.
2 hits for Death in first level? On Arcade he needs 4. Is there an easy/hard mode on sms?
Its a matter of equip. U can find a sword before making him 2 hit instead of 4.
In the first level? Where? I play this game since 1990 on arcade and on mame still..
Oh that one, thought u mean the shroom guy. Well, i just know the first boss as 2 hit, never seen him harder. But i didnt play the arcade version, only sms

Btw, 17 mins for Wonderboy with that extra level is nice.
Loved this game as a kid! Geez they must have made this version MUCH easier. The arcade version on Xbox live requires way more hits to kill everything and you can't stunlock the bosses. But I guess they wanted your quarters after all..
EDIT: This was the first version I played, but it's been so long. I remember it being tough, but didn't know this is actually a tamer version o_O.
Ive played both versions, arcade version is easier as enemies are easier to hit.
