Don't mute the mic, we can still here the music. Most us have heard these songs a million times. The joy is seeing you guys react. Seems like a decent mix right now.
I've been hesitant to tell my story, don't want to sound like some blowhard, but your joy and enthusiasm for SD has kindled lot's of memories for me and well, maybe it's my age too. SD is more than a band to me and my friends, it's very personal. I just watched you guys bopping to Night by Night; nice groove, pocket drumming. That's my high school friend, 19-year-old Jeff Porcaro, playing drums, how about that? Jeff got hired by Becker and Fagan after hearing him play at a club 2 miles from my house, Donte's, in North Hollywood, CA. He toured with them Spring 1974 and then came the gem, Katy Lied, that's him; Gold Teeth II? Holy Mother F. We were proud and blown away. SD was our favorite band back then, we called B&F America's Lennon and McCartney after their first 2 albums! And now our friend was playing drums with them! Like a fantasy, How did we get so lucky? Just time and place that's all.
Wow. So glad you shared that story. Pretty heady stuff being connected to such greatness. Grant HS famous alumni. And Donte’s Jazz Club was a landmark. Loved Jeff’s drumming. So outrageous. Thanks, Mark. ✨😚
Mark, that is really cool. I used to have a very good friend that lived in West Hills and, there was a time I was in a "rough" life, and there was a Comics and Collectable place that was in the "Mall" that used to be there that I managed the comic book section, and overnight, we had a bunch of artists painting anime characters on the floor and walls of the anime/manga section. Can't believe I lived through all that, and lots of _drama_ at that store. But many years later, I used to visit my friend from a city in San Bernardino, on a bus, metro subway, and then the Orange Line bus and then walk to his place. Oddly we had all sorts of things in common . . . except music :p. I was just reading that Jeff was from West Hills - it should be explained to Nick & Lexi that Jeff became the original drummer for *Toto* until the sad loss in 1992 :(. I am sorry for that loss of a teenage friend Mark, he was a VERY respected drummer, and he lives on in all that he recorded. - Thank you for sharing your story 🙂.
1. Do not mute yourselves pls. Your reactions are key to miles of smiles. 👍 2. You should leave the mic in the middle. It picks up both of you fine. ✔ 3. The mic mix gain down a smidge is good (technical smidge jargon sorry 🤣eh). 4. Sad we will not see your 1st reaction to "Reelin' In The Years" because it will be at the concert :( 5. Have a great time. 😊🍁
Three great songs by the smoothest band ever! Night by Night is VERY popular as a deep cut for the hardcore SD fans. It rocks. Any Major Dude is a smooth catchy tune. Barrytown tells a story about the "Moonies" cult in Barrytown, N.Y. back in the early 1970's. Enjoy! You guys are awesome for playing three SD songs in a row. Thanks!!
Hey Guys. As a sound engineer, leave the Mic in the middle ( in-between ) the two of you. It picks up both your comments nice and smooth without moving it left or right. Grats on the new Mic and keep the music flowing. On a side note, I like the way you guys interact with the camera. Makes us feel a part of the video. Good Job.
Yes, Steve here is totally right...leave the mic between yourselves. It's picking up just fine. Be careful not to bring the gain up too much. Sounds like you may be right on the verge of clipping, so don't go more. Cool, love your channel, been around a couple years or more. Thanks.
Yes, I agree with Robert and Ian about the clipping issue. It got better toward the end of the video but I would back it off alittle more. You guys will figure it out. Good luck. BTW I saw Steely Dan live a few years ago in Nashville and it was one of the best sounding shows. Get ready for your jaws to hurt from all the smiling. :)
You guys beat me to it. I was gonna say that maybe they need to turn down their mic input a little because it definitely is a little distorted. Nick and Lex, just a little helpful FYI.
Have you noticed that Fagen seemed to get more confident in his voice on each album. On pretzel he’s still singing lower in his register (which I love) and then by Aja and Gaucho he’s singing at the top of his range a lot to pierce through the thicker arrangements which tend to feature horn sections and backing vocals on every track by that point.
you know who he resembles? David Bowie! Neither of them are "great singers" (Bowie is only slightly better than Don) but they both understand how to express character and associated attitude. Not like "punk attitude" but "protagonist attitude".
@@BrennanYoung do you mean David Byrne or David Bowie? Bowie was a significantly better singer than Fagen in literally every way. Bowie has a world class voice that could do almost any genre so I’m not sure I agree with you there. If you mean Byrne than I think you have a good point
Definitely keep the moans and groans IN. There might be a setting on the microphone that will “auto- pot down” if you clap super loudly… or squeal like a “glorious prog bird” 😂😍 I bet there’s good tutorials for that new microphone out there!
I’ve been listening to your past Dan reactions and thoroughly enjoying watching you discover all this great music. It’s also reminding me just how much I love this band that I grew up with. Have you guys reacted to “My Old School” yet? It’s a must! Also want to say that Fagen’s solo album, “The Nightfly,” is one of those albums that shines from start to finish. Every single track is killer. “Ruby Baby,” “Maxine,” “The Nightfly,” “The Goodbye Look,” “Walk Between The Raindrops...” just pure genius.
" Night By Night" really wowed me the first time I heard it, which was on headphones. It has remained one of my favorites. I love the snarky lyrics of "Barrytown", and the beauty of "Any Major Dude", with that sweet cymbal at the end! I agree that you should listen to "Reelin' in the Years" before you go- too bad you won't have time to do a reaction. I love the new mic and agree with others that you should leave it in the middle, we can hear you both fine. It doesn't matter to me if you switch your mics to match how I see you, but if it bothers others, maybe you should. Please enjoy the show and have safe travels!! 🎵❤️🎵
Yeah, Charlie Freak is one of my fav SD deep cuts of all time. Cuts right to the heart, with such a unique, flowing sound. Could only be done by the Dan.
Barrytown grows on you. Both Barrytown and Any Major Dude are on the Me, Myself & Irene film soundtrack which is a soundtrack album with many Steely Dan covers by various famous artists. Check it out sometime.
Night by Night isn't a popular one, but I love th shit out of that tune. EDIT: In my feed again : ) Still some of my favorite early Dan. Love the stank face on Lex when the last guitar bit cut through: ) Any Major Dude is one of their easy going gems.
Thanks for appealing to my FOMO jealousy as you head to the concert soon. I’m thrilled to have a 3-fer Steely Dan Thursday. Great reaction and don’t worry - you’ll figure out the setup. I actually like hearing your comments and expressions, but however you do it is fine. Enjoy yourselves and safe travels - May the Dan be with you. Lol 🤭
Any Major Dude brings back memories of listening to it, ON A CASSETTE (!!) driving north on Route 22 in eastern NY, heading towards Vermont, on a beautiful summer day. Windows open, happy to be alive memories, laughing at the cows when I stopped to take photos (with a camera...this was pre-cell phone days). Glad you both enjoyed it too. Always felt it didn't get the love it deserved compared to their other music. But there's something about that song that always made me smile & the fun times associated with it make it even better. P.S. You sound great. Glad you can hear each other.
Everything sounds great.Cant go wrong with Steely Dan ever. These guys are pure class.I first heard them when I was around 6 yrs old and have always loved this smooth sound.Enjoy the concert!
It’s so cool to watch young people discover and enjoy one of the best bands of the seventies. No, one of the best bands ever. Maybe the best band ever ?
That's funny that you say "Night By Night" is less popular than the other two because I prefer it to the other two, in fact it's one of my favorites by them. To each is own I guess. And Yay! the sound is so much better! Have fun at the concert.
I just love watching your reactions. I've heard these songs countless times but watching you hear it for the first time reminds me of the epiphany I had when I first heard it thirty years ago!
Early era Dan with low numbers usually just means that it wasn't a "radio" hit. Don't let that throw you! Some of the best Dan out there never made the airwaves, as you've just seen with "Night by Night" and "Barrytown". Folks that know all of this material are generally "album" people rather than "singles" people. That's my take anyway, and an absolute guaranteed way to miss great material! I'm going through that very thing with an old friend right now. She knows the artists and lots of the more popular material, but not the good stuff that's off in the weeds! You've got to listen to albums for that! It's all important, no matter the artist, or they wouldn't have included it on the album. Sure we will like some better than others, but we owe it to the artists to hear it all! As for Dan, there simply are no clunkers!
Barrytown was written as a joke. The song is about a Korean religious cult known as The Moonies (good for a quick Wikipedia search) who had shaved heads. There headquarters was in a town near Bard called Barrytown. The central joke is that the point of view suggests the song is about hippies of the era. But in reality it is nearly the opposite: no hair instead of long hair. Not Aja level chord progressions, but the progressions are more complex than they sound. There are suspended chords and stacked chords and their common trick of slipping between major and minor chords.
Pretzel Logic is a great album. You're right in that it lacks a lot of the trademark things that they got into later, but nevetheless it is a great collection. You guys seem to be constantly on the search for intricate guitar work and not paying an awful lot of attention to the lyrics? which is shame - cos Steely Dan lyrics - all through their reportoire - can be very engaging, clever and interesting. I think at the stage they made Pretzel Logic they were still writing wiith singles in mind, a habit they had got into in their days as purely writers. Many of the tracks are 3 minutes or less, so that would accord with that guess. Barrytown is a great track - made for FM radio play with its conventional structure and sticky hook. It's probably not their best album, but it contains "Ricky..." and "Night by Night" and that rendering of "East St Louis Toodleoo" is huge fun so it's still a great listen. Parkers's Band next
I think what you guys are discovering now is that Steely Dan's sound *evolved* throughout the 70s. These earlier tunes sound different to you because you started with the Aja/Gaucho era and, as you can hear, their sound was pretty poppy at the beginning. The music got progressively more complex as the decade wore on
Nick & Lex, gosh darn it...how many times can you love Steely Dan and how many times can we LOVE that you love Steely Dan. Thanks for another great reaction video. Night By Night - funky rock Any Major Dude - steel guitar?? Really WOW!! A Steely Dan country song. these guys can do anything. Barrytown - I am gonna say (before i watch you react) - this will be the first disappointing song. i have always found it difficult to listen to Barrytown. Maybe because it was part of Steely Dan's Early years collection. Now I will watch you react and see if my opinion changes. Love This Experience of sharing time with you. (after song) - Nope - still dislike this song. the subject matter poignant, but the song sucks :) The quote "We are all about You guys" - thank you, but, you guys are the best. Ken
It all sounds great. And I think the two of you should react how the hell every you want. It's your world. "Any Major Dude..." and "Barrytown" are very Steely Dan (who else would do those songs? writing about the Moonies?), but I love both of them. Check out the story behind 'Barrytown'; quite interesting. That songs definitely one where they put the emphasis very much on the lyrics more than music that might overpower the lyrics and the subject they were trying to talk about.
Enjoy the show ! At times Pretzel Logic is my fav (when I burn myself out on Royal Scam and Countdown and Aja). Gaucho took me a while but it depends on my mood… I love it all … I totally am a Dan Man ! The new mic sounds great. Thank you for all you do! I got to see Steely Dan with Walter on a Pennsylvania State Park in my hometown of Erie called Presque Isle and it was AMAZING ! I also saw the first 90’s tour with Jeff Skunk Baxter … always a “religious” experience … I wish I could join you in Portland. Thanks guys !!!
You guys are probably among my fave reactors. Love your Springsteen reactions. Would love to hear you listen to New York City Serenade, Incident on 57th Street or Jungleland
Only natural to raise expectations with great bands. Sometimes I have to listen to songs multiple times in order to appreciate. Steel Dan's music grew on me through many years of listening to each and every song. SD didn't get much play time on the radio back in the day. Till this day, I'm what you would call a true die hard fan. My favorite song is the song of the moment. Love your reactions to SD, hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Thanks
Don't worry, the SD high just grows every time you listen to them. Don't mute... we've been wondering what all the sign language was about... now we can all just say..... Wow...... Oh..... Nice to have an in house sound teck who is also a "sighfull eyeful". Thanks for the 3 tunes... Have a safe trip, wish we all could be there.
Love all three songs can’t go wrong with Steely Dan. Speaking of Spotify being misleading you have to watch Rick Beato’s latest episode A Warning On The Future Of Music with author Ted Gioia here is the link ua-cam.com/video/qM4sEl8avug/v-deo.html
Hi NicknLex, surprised when you said Night By Night not very popular, always liked it and straight after Rikki Don't Lose That Number so what an opening to the album. As you are finding out you cannot find a bad 'Dan' track, Charley Freak is a must listen before you go see them.
Loved all the songs...of course, I'm a big Steely Dan fan...The new mic is nice...but it's funny because I hear Alexia on the left, but I see her on the right...and then Nick I hear on the right, but he is on the left. 🤷🏼♀️
Fan of Dan for years but Pretzels Logic was an album I didn't care for much. 30 years later and Ive been giving it a play recently and I'm buzzing with it. Night by night is amazing. Can't believe I passed on the Pretzel Logic album for so long.
I used to think Charlie Freak was also about Charlie Parker, but I was wrong. It is a very tragic song. Of course.... Mr. Parker's Band is the one that is actually about Charlie Parker.
I know all of these songs by heart. A fun giggle is to sing along to Any Major Dude & Barrytown with a Dylan voice, the way Fagan dips his tones, much faster than Dylan but so fun to incorporate.
Please don't mute yourselves during the song Please don't turn anything lower than the HIGHEST you had it through today's listen. Higher if anything on the music and on you guys. Maybe take headphones off if you are too loud in your own head between songs. GREAT NEW SETUP!!! CONGRATS
Being that these songs came out in 74, "Barrytown" is more relevant now than it was then. The whole idea of "Not One of Us" has never been so prevalent in the US. The excuses in the narrative are just as hollow and authentic as well. This is the last album that Steely Dan wasn't just Fagan and Becker. They were a band.
Yes! This is always how I interpreted this song and it's relevance. There's another aspect that just adds to its depth.... Barrytown, a real place near Bard college where Fagen and Becker attended, was "invaded" in the '70s by Sun Yung Moon "Unification Church ". Their representatives carried clipboards, wore very conservative clothes, and recruited for the cult at Bard. So there's a counterbalance to the obvious unjustified racism, the real fear of cults.
It’s a reaction video, so feel free to react. I personally love the new setup. Keep up the great work. I’m thrilled that you’re going to get the opportunity to see Steely Dan. I last saw them in 1994 in Pittsburgh. Rock on guys. ♥️✌🏼😎
Great vid. I thought mic was at a good level. Night by Night has always been one of my favorites, great guitar solo and lyrics. Major Dude is soothing. Have fun in Portland! The band I’m sure will be top notch.
I assume you guys know that if you're overloading the mic, which you are doing, then no amount of turning down the volume will get rid of it. You'll just have quiet distortion instead of loud distortion. And right now you do have a little bit of distortion or "clipping" happening. You have to turn down the mic input level, the gain, to get rid of the distortion you have. That will give you a clean signal to then turn up or down however much you want. But it all starts with that mic input gain. The music level seems fine though.
Particularly with albums from the 70’s and 80’s, it makes sense to do marathons. A lot of us were album listeners back then and the bands were thinking in terms of song sequencing. There were concept albums where you really should be listening to the whole thing to get the full effect. I think, particularly, with digital sources from iTunes to Spotify, people have really gotten away from listening to music that way.
You two are fun and give very good insight into the music. Do not mind expressive sounds, but don’t talk over the music in case you miss something magical. I’m new to your channel and the draw is your shared passion.
Glad y'all are getting to Night by Night and Major Dude, two of my favorites. Love the guitar in Night. I'm glad (and a little jealous) you're gonna see them live. Enjoy yourselves and stay safe.
Night by Night is in my opinion the most under-appreciated Steely Dan song of all. Such a groove 🙂

First appearance of Chuck Rainey on bass for Steely Dan on Any Major Dude. Definitely a Bob Dylan + jazz vibe.
The music got progressively more complex as the decade wore on
So glad you reacted to Any Major Dude! Thank you 😊 Next: The Boston Rag? Hope so 😊
Toss in Pearl of the Quarter
Also a gem: Monkey in Your Soul
Nick & Lex, gosh darn it...how many times can you love Steely Dan and how many times can we LOVE that you love Steely Dan. Thanks for another great reaction video.
Night By Night - funky rock
Any Major Dude - steel guitar?? Really WOW!! A Steely Dan country song. these guys can do anything.
Barrytown - I am gonna say (before i watch you react) - this will be the first disappointing song. i have always found it difficult to listen to Barrytown. Maybe because it was part of Steely Dan's Early years collection. Now I will watch you react and see if my opinion changes. Love This Experience of sharing time with you. (after song) - Nope - still dislike this song. the subject matter poignant, but the song sucks :)
The quote "We are all about You guys" - thank you, but, you guys are the best.
Ken
Short & Sweet, and what CAN you say? Hey - Any Major Dude Will Tell You. Loved it! ...Only 3 months behind on this one. Good job.
Sounds great! Love when u review Dan ! Thanks and peace! Hope u love the concert
Any major dude is up there on my list of best songs of all time. Steely Dan has always been a favorite of mine, even as a kid👍🏼🔥
This album was made for driving on a road-trip. I love it
Only natural to raise expectations with
great bands. Sometimes I have to listen
to songs multiple times in order to appreciate. Steel Dan's music grew on me through many years of listening to
each and every song. SD didn't get much
play time on the radio back in the day. Till
this day, I'm what you would call a true
die hard fan. My favorite song is the song of the moment. Love your reactions to SD, hope you enjoy them as
much as I do. Thanks
On "Logic" and "Thrill" it was when Steely Dan utilized the lap steel guitar which gave the songs a countryesque vibe to it.
It's also on Countdown
And great to see the Steely Dan boxed set in the background. 👍
I think Any Major Dude is special, because unlike other SD songs it's completely sincere
Glad you got to " Night by Night". Love that Skunky FUNKY tune.
I always thought "Night By Night" sounded like the theme from a truly great 70s noir crime series that they never got around to making.
Their is a movie called Nightmare Alley 2022. You should check it out. I swear, by the end of the movie I was singing Night By Night in my head.
This is my favorite Dan album. I believe this is Donald Fagen's best vocally.
Love all three songs can’t go wrong with Steely Dan. Speaking of Spotify being misleading you have to watch Rick Beato’s latest episode A Warning On The Future Of Music with author Ted Gioia here is the link

Excited for you both! Enjoy the concert! You guys look and sound great also! And keep being you! That is why we love you and the channel! Take care!
Barrytown has always had a Dylan-esque feel for me, Like a Rolling Stone.
Both Any Major Due and Barrytown have heavy Dylan influences. Barrytown is about the Moonies. lol
Fan of Dan for years but Pretzels Logic was an album I didn't care for much. 30 years later and Ive been giving it a play recently and I'm buzzing with it. Night by night is amazing. Can't believe I passed on the Pretzel Logic album for so long.
My friend Danny gave me this album as a gift in 1974 and started me on my Steely Dan journey. I have a lot to thank him for.
Love your Steely Dan plays "Night by Night" one of my favorites. Can you do Boz Scaggs "Lowdown"
That's Jeff Porcaro on Silk Degrees with David Paich and Hungate on bass, the Toto rhythm section. The album is iconic, so is the Lowdown intro.
@@SeaMark782 Iconic drum intro! And maybe the greatest single of the decade. Just smart and cool and lean and perfect production.
You are getting deep in the catalog…next up “Charlie Freak”, “ Boston Rag” and East St Louis Toodle-Oo
Three very idiosyncratic tunes.
Charlie Freak is one of the most interesting songs on this album.
@@dggydddy59 I think the Steely Ben video of Charlie a freak is fantastic
I used to think Charlie Freak was also about Charlie Parker, but I was wrong. It is a very tragic song.
Of course....
Mr. Parker's Band is the one that is actually about Charlie Parker.
Love it..I can remember buying all their 70's albums and Gaucho the day or week they came out...Keep em' coming' my Rocky mtn friends..much love,Kent
Love listening with y’all
Steely Dan can be a good concert, but keep in mind these albums were studio masterpieces. The live show is a bit different of course
It's a reaction video. I of course enjoy hearing the reactions as much as seeing them.
I know all of these songs by heart. A fun giggle is to sing along to Any Major Dude & Barrytown with a Dylan voice, the way Fagan dips his tones, much faster than Dylan but so fun to incorporate.
Please don't mute yourselves during the song
Please don't turn anything lower than the HIGHEST you had it through today's listen. Higher if anything on the music and on you guys. Maybe take headphones off if you are too loud in your own head between songs.
GREAT NEW SETUP!!! CONGRATS
Being that these songs came out in 74, "Barrytown" is more relevant now than it was then. The whole idea of "Not One of Us" has never
been so prevalent in the US.
And Happy May 19 (Hey Nineteen) - unofficial Steely Dan Day. Lol ✨💗🥳
Make tonight a wonderful thing (say it again) ✨😉🥳💕
The drummer on Night by Night is an 18 year old legendary Jeff Porcaro (RIP).
In addition, it really sounds great!
A little more low end in the music and roll off the edge on the top end.
CONGRATZ on the new setup!
Have a good time at the concert. Even with Walter gone the band will not disappoint you.
Awesome guitar work in Night By Night👍
Skunk Baxter played that lead guitar solo on Night By Night awesome!
It’s a reaction video, so feel free to react. I personally love the new setup. Keep up the great work. I’m thrilled that you’re going to get the opportunity to see Steely Dan. I last saw them in 1994 in Pittsburgh. Rock on guys. ♥️✌🏼😎
Yeah!!! Night By Night
Hey this just popped up on my phone I am so excited! To from my Favorite Steely Dan album pretzel logic I know you guys will love love you
An Astonishingly Good Song
By Steely Dan is
" Negative Girl "
Unique and Haunting with a
Mesmerizing Sound and Feel.
You guys are so cute, and so much fun to watch and listen to that muting yourselves would take away from what I enjoy most about your videos.
You guys are funny as all hell! Night by Night is a Rocker!
Magic... I've been a Dan fan for 35 years, and Night by night has crept up the list of favourite tracks, slowly but surely.
I Love "Any Major Dude" and "Barry Town" will be a treat for you (East St. Louis Toodle-oo is a must Follow up)!
