Wing is a pump wing not really made for riding swell but besides it being a little twitchy it does a great job on a smaller day. Helps connect waves and maximizes glide. The down wind board makes popups a breeze. Having a blast with this setup.

Is the flatwater paddleup essential to do this surfing?

No it’s much easier in waves. If you have trouble just take off closer to shore where the wave is steeper. Getting up on a wave is 2-3x easier than flat water. Once you get the hang of it you can move further out where the waves are flatter. The other option is to get a motor like a foil drive and use that to get up on foil.
