Love this. Brent Mason's Tele is one of the most interesting artist models Fender ever did. Firebird pickup seems like the perfect substitution for the mini hum.
Dude. I have a Godin Radium tele with humbuckers and a 24-3/4 scale and I love it’s diversity. It bridges a tele twang with a les Paul sound. It’s versatile for many styles. I find most folks who try a tele with humbuckers like them. Granted single coils provide their own magic. It depends on what you want to do.
I really want to build a tele like this. Les Pauls are kinda uncomfortable for me to play but I love telecasters so I think that would get me pretty close.
Yeah! A friend of mine got a Gibson Demo Shop LP special with a p90 mounted tele-style on the bridge, and a P90 neck. Sounds amazing, and feels very close to a Tele.
I loved it!!! - Now I have to get me a neck Firebird pickup and a Tele to mod. I would not mess with my 70th Anniversary Broadcaster, but might as well get a 2nd hand MIM or something to mod the life out of it!.
I've been researching everything I can as I want to try my hand at taking a nice Squier Classic Vibe Tele and modding it Nashville Style .. Wow that mini-humbucker totally sends it over the top, sonically ..!! Absolutely brilliant ..!!
I have a thinline i put humbuckers in and I love it. I went with a rail(with brass plate) in the bridge and it still has PLENTY of tele twang whether in single or humbucker mode. In the neck I stuck in a full sized PAF clone, but I regretted it. I would have gone with a P90 instead, it is the best sounding neck pickup ever in my opinion.
You should put a push pull pot in there to engage the neck pickup, that way you can have the versatility the hyper switch would offer without actually having the hyper switch.
It's a little late now, but you could have used the Hyperswitch and kept the control plate too by simply cutting a custom pickguard that comes further down the sides of the control plate to around the first pot position. A modded Tele Deluxe pickguard is another option.
Thx for all the mod videos…I just installed your 5:34 p90ish for strat pick up in the neck, and really like it! How would you compare it to your firebird pickup? Thx
A Firebird type pickup is magical in the neck position of a Tele or Strat. They sound like a pissed off Strat pickup with more bass & mids. Another cool option is a Filtertron. Does the American Pro II Telecaster come with body routed for 3 pickups?
I like a Humbucker in the neck. My favorite guitar is actually my MusicMan Valentine BFR, with the telecaster brdige style pickup, and a Humbucker neck. With coil splitting, its incredibly versatile.
I did a similar thing with my Tele, only I used DiMarzio. I put the Tele pup in the middle. Used some single coil humbucker sized thing they were selling in the neck. Not very happy with that. Kinda sterile sounding. Your neck pup sounds much better than mine. Thing I always wonder is why Fender never makes one of these with a Strat neck pup. Everyone loves the neck pup in a Strat, but I've never seen Fender put one in a Tele. Seems kinda obvious. The middle & bridge sound good together. Very Straty on both yours and mine. I play the Sweet Home riff to judge sufficient quack, but yours sounded quacky too.
Great video Dylan, there’s something about the mini Firebird humbuckers just listen to Johnny Winter I think this Mod makes this tele so versatile,Your pickups sound killer to my ears Dylan!
Good videos! I have a question for you. I have a telecaster bridge pickup that I'm trying to wire in reverse so that it will work with my 3 pickup Nashville. It's out of phase with the others if I wire it normally. The problem is, it won't work, it has zero output when wired with hot to ground. My question is, is the metal base plate normally connected to the ground wire. It's got to be shorting out somewhere and I'm suspecting it's because of the metal plate. which certainly makes contact with the bridge tray through the 3 screws. Also, if that's the issue, can the plate be separated from ground, and the pickup still work properly? Thanks
I have one of each - HS and SS telecaster... with the poles on the Humbucker towards the bridge because that's how Keef did it. I don't actually like the standard wiring on a Nashville. I want the ability to get the classic tele Bridge and Neck. If I want mid/bridge or mid/neck I'll play a strat. But like everything, that's just it's personal preference. Like I also think Mystic surf green is one of the best colours to come out of Fender for a while.
Everything fine and versatile and according to 60cycle hum - this neckhumbucker seems to me a real good option. But finally the bridge - and only the bridge kicks in an there it is: the great ball of fire - so no bashing but for me a 3. PU in a Telly seams to a bit like a third wheel on a Harley.
Dylan, I love the video and really like what you did with the guitar. And by the way, I don't think I've ever seen you play like this before. . . Fantastic! So did you just go with a standard 5-way switch in place of the HyperSwitch?
Amazing mod! I once saw in one of your videos that when putting a humbucker on a tele's neck you recommended bypassing the tone control for that pickup, because even when fully cranked it still loses some top end. Did you fit this one in that way? Great video! Thanks
This why I want several Tele's - traditonal, humbucker, one each tuned to standard and another two tuned to DADGAD. Oh, and a "Micawber". Yes, you expose yourself on the Net and some people will always get on your case. Wide mouths and closed minds.
Too bad about the hyper switch. Surely there are options. Like route the body so it fits and use a thinline tele pickguard. Or even a strat pickguard. Or buy or make a control plate cover a little wider. I'm no expert but it just seems like there should be a reasonable way to overcome this. BTW - you might want to contact Seymore DUncan to see if they have any plans for a slim version. They are missing a significant potential market.
Hey Dylan, love the video and how you take it to the next level. You are 100% correct about having fun doing these mods. to a guitar. You don't diminish the guitar at all,in fact you embellish the guitar to something that is special and cool. Good for you for letting people know."lets have fun with this mod and make this thing special.
DYLAN, I can't believe you didn't use a "toneshaper circuit". You can't mix and match humbuckers, MiniHumbuckers with single coils without using a toneshaper circuit. That telecaster needs a Special Dylan talks toneshaper circuit customized by Dylan to Balance out the volume levels and tone. When you switch to the minihumbucker with a single coil the AC voltage level should be the same as when you switch to just the minihumbucker by it self as well as when you switch to the single coil by it self. There is no way those pickups are balanced in all pickup combinations.
Screw AB. Most people watch videos on their phone anyway and who knows how the guitar really sounds when YT is done compressing the hell out of it. You're spreading the gospel and adding something real unique to the cornucopia of guitar themed videos on YT. Instant addition to my subscriptions. I always thought the HiFi crowd was top tier bonkers but some individuals of the guitar scene are really taking the cake.
Maybe the question is wrong, or maybe the definition is wrong, when you say telecaster are you speaking of the typical sound or are you talking about the shape? I would say if the first thing is the tone, then no, not a hum-bucker, but if you’re just talking the shape, then it should get whatever pick ups and whatever town do you want
The neck pickup isnt terribly important to the Telecaster sound, so a firebird or P90 are fine. You have to have the traditional bridge lap steel style pickup tonstill be a Telecaster to me. A five way switch or Nashville pickup setup defeats the simplicity of the T style guitar to me. Just get a Strat body for that
Do whatever you want to your guitar. I like stuff that's absolutely blasphemous to purists. Like removing a floyd from a left handed 80s aria pro strat and slapping a tele bridge with a tele single coil in it direct to jack and strung right handed.

If I ever got a Godin it would have to be a Radium!! ❤
@@ItsVictoriaG I have more expensive guitars but I love that thing. It just feels great and plays great.
I really want to build a tele like this. Les Pauls are kinda uncomfortable for me to play but I love telecasters so I think that would get me pretty close.
That FB pick up sounds darn GOOD!
A P90 in a Tele is really sweet as well!!
P90 is awesome in a Tele.
Yeah! A friend of mine got a Gibson Demo Shop LP special with a p90 mounted tele-style on the bridge, and a P90 neck. Sounds amazing, and feels very close to a Tele.
That’s exactly how I was hoping it would sound. Amazing. Love it.

Sounds great specially that mini-humbucker in the neck!
somebody is always on my case... i think it sounded pretty good. dont need the hyper switch thingy. the less apps and crap ya need , the better!
That’s a pretty sweet mod. Well done Dylan. Loving the tones.
I'm learning from your videos and how you articulate everything
Sounds great! Great job Dylan!
The Firebird pickup is gold !
Sweet ! I purchased a beautiful tele! It’s tricked out and plays like a dream. The best guitar is the ones that “just fit ) sweet
That looks, and sounds, awesome! I’d rock that. Congrats to the owner🤘
Thanks to your patron for paying for the guitar and pick ups - Great Video
Maaannn that neck pickup sounds killer. Makes me want to put one together in similar fashion.

Sounds fantastic Dylan! Honestly don't miss the switch with such a good combination in pickups.
Sounds friggin great!!! I think I found the neck humbucker pup for my thin line tele build!!! Keep up the great work!!!
If Fender sold a model like this, I’d consider buying one. Very cool sounding! 🤘

It sounds great, nice work and pickin'
This is amazing! Great video and great work!!
3 mini toggles will allow any combination you like
Outstanding mod. Killer tone
I have an EYB-Megaswitch in my Nashville Tele.Switch Positin 3 = Neck + Bridge
You can never go wrong with a hum bucker in the bridge position.

Great job
Sweet build bro!! ✊🏻
You would have to use something like the fishman rechargeable battery for the tele if you could fit the hyper switch
Is there a good reason for using a Strat pickup in a Nashville tele, instead of a second tele neck pickup?
I have one of each - HS and SS telecaster... with the poles on the Humbucker towards the bridge because that's how Keef did it. I don't actually like the standard wiring on a Nashville. Dylan why didn't you use the Freeway Switch? It's English. Stew Mac sells it in the us.
Because they are pointlessly complicated and unnecessary

What size pots did you use?
Can you do mine like the Tele you just moded
P90 n the neck, flat pole at the bridge
I put a humbucker and humbucker sized P90 in my telecaster
We should put Tele pickups in more guitars
It's not their guitar so why do they care? I enjoy your projects and gives me ideas I might try...
Is the middle pu out of phase or am I having a stroke?

Fan-uckin' stabulous !
Dude, anything in a Tele is the cats ass. Leo really did great it right on the first try.
Tele neck pick up is useless. Humbuckers in neck position shoukd be a standard
Enjoy show but intro is a bit much...

no it is not a tele anymore
Better tell Fender marketing department their Nashville Tele, Troublemaker Tele, Tele Deluxe, Boxer Tele and Gold Foil Tele aren't a Tele anymore
