In my opinion, as one of the kids in this climb i can confirm i felt extremely safe. There was no wind or rain, best visibility u could possibly get and my mum had done these routes multiple times in winter conditions. She knows both of our abilitys and has been mountaneering for over a decade and knows what she is doing and when it is appropriate to use ropes. And at the end of the day, its only a grade 3 🤷‍♂️

    • @mw5360

100% depends on the child. If you have sensible kids that have built up their ability and confidence properly, and know how to escape if you need to, then it doesn't seem bad at all.

Adolescents will gravitate to danger, I'd prefer for them to experience it in the safety of my care and supervision. Mountain climbing develops a more rounded and wholesome individual with their head screwed on which is more than I can say for many adolescents

Free soloing is not the greatest idea, especially with backpacks. Just my grain of salt. Just climb with a rope or go for hikes instead of putting yourselves in danger.

Really cool video. I have a 6yo and 8yo and though this type of thing is beyond them and my own comfort levels for now, it's an inspirational video to show you can bring up teenagers to have their heads screwed on, respect their environment, know their limits.. and end up with incredible experiences. Well done.

Clearly a fantastic experience for those boys and a hell of a lot better for their personal development than sitting in a basement playing video games.
I can see why you called that free soloing (I probably wouldn’t have clicked if you’d called
It unprotected scrambling) but I that’s honestly the kind of terrain where most people wouldn’t consider a belay . Still a little risky but not like face climbing. I’m not being a pedant. I’m just saying, it’s class 3. If a hold breaks, or you misstep or even if you take a short fall, it’s not necessarily fatal or even serious

Hey Paul, I think this is a refreshing perspective here. Someone did fall on here a few years back if I recall but there are 3 points of contact throughout and it is line you said a grade 3 in my scrambling book

@@kadadventuresyeah i live in in New York State in the US and our Adirondacks have a lot of terrain like this. You’re not gonna fall because of an accident. You’re going to fall because of a mistake. Unfortunately people make those mistakes on occasion because they are over confident, lack respect for the terrain, or are just trying to get a selfie.

God these comments are absurd. Are you never going to do anything slightly dangerous with your kids? Take them surfing (drown). Driving (crash). Hike (mountain lion/bear attack). Walk around a downtown area (gang shooting). Watch a sad movie (suicide). Damn! Can't do shit I guess. Also...these are 14 year olds. Not exactly toddlers, folks.

Under no conditions is free soloing ok to encourage for children to try. Idgaf if they have the skills and grips of Adam Ondra and the mental of Alex Honnold. They are too young to risk their lives. I really dont care if you free solo as an adult. I admire the skills and the mental capabilities of those who do. But you should be an adult before you gamble with your life.
I know you can say that your child also has a risk of drowning when in a swimming pool or tripping on a sidewalk and onto the street under the wheels of a vehicule. Its clearly not the same though.
I can't with good concience accept the idea of promoting free soloing at all. Not to mention - for kids. I can very easily imagine myself as a 14 year old watching this and taking your authority as enough justification for me to free solo. Especially cause I didnt even care wether or not I got hurt or killed. Or at least it wouldnt come to my mind.
I could maybe swallow the video was it not for the obnoxious music in the background making it obvious how light your approach is to this. And I know, Ive read the comments. And, again, I dont care if your kids are the second incarnation of Mark- Andre Leclerk. Teach them safety. Soloing is a vice. A vice that kills 90% of those that attempt it. And yeah, it can feel amazing, but so can any other vice. And there's a reason why we dont allow kids to drink, smoke, take drugs, get tatoos or gamble at a young age. Their brains arent formed enough to make an informed decision about their safety not to mention - what they want. Who tf knows what they want when they're a kid really? And its okay to experiment with experiences but it should always be safe if it's a child.

This is a diff climb or grade 3 scramble. I feel I layed out my considerations of safety quite clearly in the video you commented on.
Whether you want to accept this, the truth is that kids this age ARE experimenting with alcohol and drugs. They are sensible lads able to make their own choices and I beleive that if we raise our kids to self reflect, they have every capacity to make decisions for themselves.
I think I have highlighted the dangers in my video. The kids I know and climb with know their limits amd express them which I respect.

Nothing wrong with it if done properly. 3rd grade scrambling without rope is a normal thing in the mountains and usually also done with kids. Normally you bring a backup rope anyway if shit hits the fan. They only have to be old enough to be aware of the danger.

'How to take your kids free soloing' Hmm I wonder what the comment section will be like 😅 .. maybe this is just good trolling? I don't have the knowledge to comment on the specifics of this video, so I can't assess the risk lvl. On a more general note I think people should accept that other people choose an apparent higher level of risk in their lives. Perhaps they believe that a 'low risk' culture/lifestyle is actually high risk in that it might make you less capable mentally and physically, less capable of handling danger, hardships and stress, less daring when need be etc. lowering your likelyhoood of success, happiness ..

Thank you for this insight. We are not all the same. I really feel that life is for living and the sports I do I am so present in the moment, for me, it enhances my life. I don't force my kids to follow in my footsteps, they have dipped in and out of many sports as they see fit. For them to want to enjoy the mountain like I do, I don't pass judgement on but will always do all I can to keep them safe.
