Do you start & finish your edits in the same program?

    • @equisetuminc

Yes, because I use Capture One. After decades of being a beta site for Adobe, and owning perpetual licenses of all their software, my company lost 400 edited files in Lightroom. Adobe’s attitude was enough to ditch it. Once burned etc.

I am starting to use Photoshop more, I first I was not using it because I did not know what I was doing so I did not feel comfortable with the program as it is quite different from lightroom. I am slowly getting more used to it but don't use it anywhere near its full potential.

2:58 You don't need to use the patch tool for selection. Use lasso instead. The patch tool is used for patching like what Lightroom does.
5:42 you can press Z and mouse drag to zoom into a specific area. I don't usually scroll, but I pan with spacebar+mouse drag.

I had never thought to combine the Orton effect with luminosity masks - great tip! Lightroom is slowly becoming the place I decide which photos I want to edit and then apply simple changes before opening up in Photoshop.

You can use the lasso to select a small area and then just press delete and it will default to content aware fill so hit enter. Slightly faster than using the patch and going down a menu and what not.

I actually just used PS the other day to remove a car from the background of one of my photos. I futzed with the healing tool in LR about 10 minutes, before I remembered I even had Photoshop and when I loaded it in, I had it done in about 10 seconds!
Photoshop's AI seems much more intuitive for removals and I'm trying to become more aware of bouncing between the two programs.
This video definitely helps as a starting glance at a few awesome features I can definitely take advantage of in my editing! Thanks, Mark!

Nice video and great explanation of reasons to go to Photoshop. Also, I love your shot of The Narrows. When I hiked (waded) it, I mistakenly tried to get everything in a shot. Yours is so much better, so perfect. Just two elements, the first being the rocks of course. After my eye was drawn to that, it was taken by three leading lines converging on the second element, the person, which gave scale and perspective to the shot. Sheer excellence, Mark.

Mark, good morning and thank you for another sweet vid. I have a problem with the LRC spot tool in that it really bogs down with more than a dozen spots, and gets worse and worse as you add more points. I like shooting macros and there is always tiny bits of stuff that will need to be removed. This is a problem in PS in that many of these patches are not single click-n-go actions. (and yes, I have a huge amount of processor power and ram).

Enjoyed the video Mark. Photoshop can definitely be intimidating. When I first started out I wanted to know everything. Once I realized that was unrealistic I started to focus on one technique at a time. Now I can pretty much do everything you covered in the video. Hopefully with more experience I will get better at those techniques I’ve leaned as well as adding new ones.

Mark another great video, In some ways you are making the case just to initially cull your images in Bridge and then just go straight to Photoshop... Question when using the high pass method of sharpening will this sharpen clouds / sky ? One of the great easy feature in LR that easily allows you to make off areas that don't need sharpening. Lastly if coming out of LR or ACR into to Photoshop do you do any "raw" sharpening first and do you intentionally set sharpening to 0 in LRC/ACR

  • @I_am-that_guy
    @I_am-that_guy 3 роки тому

I certainly agree clone/heal tools in LR are highly inferior, my biggest issue is the healing tool will grab colors near where you select a blemish, it may be by design but I much dislike having to clone and then heal over it when PS does a much better job in one step! I’ve only begun my PS journey after feeling like I’ve mastered most of the features in LR. PS is daunting at first but the more I play with it the more the workflow makes sense. So many options is what makes it overwhelming!

  • @HR-wd6cw

Totally agree on the spot removal. That's one thing I absolutely will NOT do in LR, even to this day. It's sad that we are on version 10 of LR and they can't even give us the same spot removal tools as what's found in LR--I mean it's OK if you are doing spot removal on something that either has a repeated texture or no texture (like a blue sky) but beyond that, removing complete objects, it's very hard and LR just falls short on this. And this lack of better spot removal technology is also bothersome to me especially if Adobe's hope was that more people would just use LR as some people find Photoshop to be intimidating, so I think Adobe really needs to rethink the spot removal in LR (and make it work more like the clone stamp and spot removal tools in PS). If they did that, I would spend maybe 10% of my time in LR, and not like 1/3 of my time.

I am starting to use photoshop more but find it less user-friendly than Lightroom, for example sharpen tools use a tiny preview window and adjustments are suck-it-and-see whereas in Lightroom I can see effects globally and in real time. The one sharpen tool I value though is motion blur correction, it doesn’t always work but I have been able to successfully revisit photos which were otherwise not quite good enough.

Mark, helpful video as usual, I sold all my Canon EOS 5 III gear, in 2014, to move to Fuji, started with X-T1 then 2 and finally 3, but, I got rid of my Fuji X-T3 in 2020 because the sensors are not supported by Adobe, I bought Capture One Pro, but find that I doesn't support Focus Stacking nor Panaramas and lightroom makes Fuji RAF files look like they've been infested with worms! I did try converting to DNG first, but just the same. I was a long time user of Lightroom and a bit of Photoshop, so C1Pro didn't help my workflow, being an ageing amateur. I'm now back to Canon 5D IV and the holy trinity of lenses 16-35 f4, 24-105 f4 and 70-200 f4 and blissfully back to Adobe and my preferred workflow. Can you tell me how you are getting on with the X-T4, focus stacking and panoramas in particular please? (GFX is irrelevant as, I believe, they used a Beyer sensor in that camera) Many thanks.

Great video, Mark. I would also like to see a video on Lumenzia.

I can't really see a difference between clone and heal in lightroom and find it strange to use. For any spot removal, especially of old scanned slides, I find the spot healing tool in Canon DPP to be much simpler and more effective.

Mark, do you have a video here or a purchase that contains how you set up the preferences in Lightroom Classic from General thru Network in detail? Seen many of your videos on LRC and Photoshop but have not came across any yet showing in detail the basics of starting new. Could you point me in the right direction?
    TY.
    Lightroom Classic 11.5
    MacBook Pro M1 Max (Monterey)
    Canon 5Dsr
Have not opened up Photoshop yet.

Great video Mark, I’ve found the same thing - migrating more of the process over to Photoshop. How do you handle the process of focus stacking at the same time as exposure blending? I often find myself exporting about 6 or 8 layers into Photoshop and then struggle with what to do first.

Thanks for checking out the video Adam! I'll focus stack the different exposures first and then blend the images after that.

@@MarkDenneyPhoto Thanks! Makes sense. I tried this with auto blending the other day but PS made a mess of it. Redid it by auto aligning and auto stacking base exposures, then manually painting in the shadow and highlight recovery layers. Suppose this is best way then. Thanks again!

Bridge all day over Lightroom. CR with PS is my workflow. LR is slow compared to editing than CR

Mark you are not using Photoshop native lumanisity Mask. I don't have the external tools you are using. will be nice ig you can show us how to do it in native Photoshop

I don't either and would love to know how to use them too. I see more and more people use them but I wouldn't have a clue how to download or use them.

Do you still do all your range masks such as radial mask to dodge and burn within LrC before bringing the file over to PS ? Loved the video, really opened my eyes to the possibilities with luminosity masks

It depends on how detailed I need to be - sometimes it's done in LR and other times PS

Wonderful video! You should really have a look at Darktable. The only missing feature is focus stacking. Everything else is there: high pass, low pass, retouch, all kind of blend modes for each module, both parametric ( luminosity, hue, chroma ecc... ) and drawn masks for each module...
