Adam has said that the lead foil was one of the hardest things to source for all of Mythbusters, because no company in North America could reliably create such thin foil. Only makes me appreciate one of my favorite episodes even more!

Adam talked about how tricky the lead-foil was to get on his YT-channel.
They had an US-maker of lead-foil that promised them the thickness they required for the myth but they actuall broke their equipment trying to get the lead rolled that thin. They then found the German company who not only made them the foil as thin as they needed it, but I think 30% thinner than that.

I am rewatching these and realize that it wasn’t really educational, it was not encouraging people to try new things - it was just pure entertainment, cut short enough to be fun to watch and a message “don’t do this at home!”.

@@aliancemd The show always talks about physics, chemistry, historical context, engineering, etc. The core of the TV show is to use the scientific method to check whether a myth is false, true or plausible.
How the hell is that not educational?

I love how Kari DID put some muscle definition on Grantbot's guns there :D
Also, Jamie saying the lead balloon was "the most bizarre thing we ever put together" while the plan for the steam machine gun (aka rotation slingshot of death) was still visible behind Adam's back when planning the cube is extremely funny. Like, oh yeah, the high pressure whirling death machine? That's a dime a dozen - just another day at M5..

Adam said during a Tested episode that Jamie wasn't really into this myth until they got hold of lead foil thin enough and managed to have a prototype floating in the air. It's hard working on a project for which you see no future and it's not always because of a lack of interest. Sometimes all the available facts point towards it just not working out, so you don't want to invest any effort or passion. Props to anyone who is then willing to completely change their tune when it looks that the project may be worthwhile afterall.

He could have easily just spoken English. Eppstein im Taunus is a stones throw from Frankfurt am Main. Beautiful place and like most of Germany is full of the kind of Germans who begin a sentence with, "I do apologise about the awful state of my English" then proceed to speak better English than native speakers.

@@grimmner Eppstein is a few km from Frankfurt and as such has a very high level of English due to the sheer amount of international business in the region. Going to the more remote areas and toward Eastern Germany you'll find fewer English speakers but in and around the big Western cities there's a long history of good English. My friends grandfather was born an raised in Mainz, speaks excellent English due to his work in the 60's. Lovely chap too, fantastic knowledge of local beers.

The lead foil used by Adam and Jamie is produced in Eppstein im Taunus (Epp-stine im T-ow-nuss, not Epp-steen). Beautiful little place in the Taunus mountains a short distance from Frankfurt am Main, even if one must unfortunately travel through Höchst to get there.
One of my favourite places in Deutschland with beautiful mountain hikes, stunning scenery and the best Italian restaurant perched up on a mountain right next to Kaisertempel.

    TNT explodes about 4000 m / s, not 7000.
7000 is closer to "plastic" explosives (such as hexogene, "heksogeeni", or hexotol, "heksotoli", which are, as far as I was tought on par with "C4").
Still, TNT is awesome explosive, and certainly great for this myth.
