  • Trying out my new 4K Action camera. This video was recorded at 2.7K, 30 FPS. I think that 1080 @ 30 FPS would have looked better. Need a faster memory micro card. This one is a V10, need to test a V30. Anything faster than 30 FPS needs a faster recording memory card. But I did get the tail up at time stamp @ 2:54 minute mark only a few seconds.

    I think you may be correct.
    He better get some quick.
    I would rather see him learning to fly a tailwheel than putting miles on the Corsair for no reason.
    His non aviation followers on the videos may be enthralled, but all the pilots and builders I talk to about it know there is something fishy.

    Hi Don great looking plane,your hard work paid off. As a long time tail wheel and career airline pilot I was taught to line up on the runway centreline and maintain it on take off and landing and make early corrections to get back on if you drifted off of it until your down to taxi speed. If you practice this basic technique it will save you any runway excursions especially on slippery surfaces. If you are on the centre line you have some room to correct for any deviation. This is the best advice I can pass on to you to keep you safe. I have had a lot of experience operating off of icy runways in northern Canada and it worked for me. I wish you all the best with your Corsair and many hours of blue skys..”

    I can understand the concern with the crosswind component as you are getting the feel of the aircraft. Is there a published max crosswind component for the WAR Corsair or is that something you have to figure out for yourself as a home builder?

      As for published data on these planes, there is little to none. I'm talking to a current owner who still has and flies a P47 model of the WAR planes. So I'm getting a lot of input from him.

    That was really nice. You could jack the tail up so the hor stab is level, swing the prop through so you know the prop arc clearance and the apply pinstripe tape to the canopy, horizontally or vertically, to give you a tail flight reference for the over-the-nose view. That is one, good looking bird you've got there!

    G'day Dan,
    Great stuff ; this was the best view yet...!
    I'm getting a lot of that
    Low Afternoon Sunlight/Tree-Shadow "Flicker-Vertigo" around here, myself lately.
    Midwinter Sunset here was 17:08 Local Mean Time on the Solstice, and on the 22nd I arrived home at 17:02...; when it was 5°C...., O.A.T..
    I never fully appreciated how very useful it is to wear an Akubra Hat with a Brim which enables a bit of a Head-tilt to put one's Eyeballs in a little patch of Shade - from which to look out at the World, when proceeding
    Up-Sun.
    Not like a
    Full-Face
    Motorcycle Skid-Lid,
    At all...
    Sunglasses don't really help a lot, either ; adding a second layer of Plastic for the Light to be Glare-Refracted off, or bounced from the Dust on both sides of the Glasses' Lenses as well as both sides of the Visor.
    It makes it quite
    Challenging when
    Riding along the edge of the Road, at about half the prevailing surrounding Traffic's Speed - all going into the low Sun..., while looking out to avoid Roadside Dusk-feeding frightened Kangaroos, Wallabies or Deer - which may be
    Spooked into jumping out in front of my Headlights (when Blinded).
    I think I'd be tempted to lie down with a Marking-Pen, and blacken the Sidewalls of that overfed Neoprene Rollerblade- Tyre doing duty as the Tailwheel - purely for the
    Look
    Of the thing (!).
    Mayhap I be
    Prejudiced, but where I growed hup ;
    All Tailwheel's was
    Black, every single solitary one of them...
    So that there
    Orange Doughnut on the
    Tailwheel's Hub
    Just(ifiably ?)
    Doesn't quite
    Look right ;
    Not unto
    Moi,
    Not
    Any no how...
    (Except, that...; it WORKS....!)
    (lol !).
    Such is life,
    Have a good one...
    Stay safe.
    ;-p
    Ciao !

      @Dynodon64  3 місяці тому

    • @lynarmstrong-dv8vj
      @lynarmstrong-dv8vj 3 місяці тому +1

      @@GrogHamboneI totally agree, this is not a toy and he needs some current tail wheel instruction with a good instructor so that he can have a successful first flight. The way he is trying to fast taxi is dangerous because the aircraft is in a stall attitude and if it gets airborne it will be a crash. He must get comfortable using the rudder and not relying on the tail wheel lock, that will not keep aircraft going straight. He must get the tail up in the airstream to really have directional control. The other thing is he doesn’t want to wear a crash helmet because he can’t close the canopy, well then just keep it open or remove it for the test flights. I would rather him spending money on tail wheel instruction than on cameras for UA-cam. Look what happened to the Tennessee fly girl on you tube. Don seems like a good guy and is a perfectionist when it comes to his aircraft but he must stand back and have an experienced instructor assess him on a tail dragger.

The FAA has an excellent downloadable Experimental Test flight manual that will be hugely helpful from this phase moving forward. Also...PLEASE read and read again & again, the book; 'Stick and Rudder'!...before you ever take off in your new bird.

    Wow.. 60 mph and the tail not full up yet? Im curious about your established AOA setting on the horizontal stab when built it?
    Also 'empty weight' and current 'gross weight' during this test run? My Sonarai II gets her tail up at 40-45 mph IAS...but Im sure its much lighter than your bird. Keep going and do it ALL "by the numbers". I'm drooling to see you get her up and back down safely.

    The engine sound's very healthy, is there a designed stall speed for the air craft ? The run looked smooth at high speed without very much tracking, (judged by sighting off the tail wheel, to the runway centre line) Well done once again on a successful ground test, soon there will only be onwards and upwards to go : )

    • @Dynodon64

    Thanks for the update. Great camera angle from out there. 60 MPH and the tail barely rises? So I wonder what it'll take to get it way up as it would be in a wheel landing. 70ish? More power faster will help bring up the tail. I'm only at 3500 rpm, the engine will go 6000 rpm. I'm looking into the cloth helmets right now. Will give me more head room to the canopy. And less sun burn.

      @@Dynodon64With your elevator in the neutral position that it was , you’d better be careful at those speeds . At 60 mph , it’s got to be close to flying speed and the last thing you need is for it to try to become airborne that slow. It’s a very bad spot to put yourself in. Just a recommendation, but I’d push forward stick to increase the tail height and in turn decreasing your wing AOA to prevent a surprise first flight. A DC-3 is no different in that aspect. With the tail low , it’ll try to fly before it’s ready.
