I sketched my dream skatepark for my small town of 3,000. Close to 3 years later (city council meetings, finding local construction teams) it was done. The delays helped me develop the design over 2 years! It cost less than this park and is about 200 feet long! but everything was done local (and the concrete is holding perfectly after 2 years 😁)

Hey, John! Thanks for visiting the Commerce Tx skatepark! A bit shocked you didn't take a trip 15 minutes away to the interesting sulphur springs park! I called commerce home for a few years, went to the meetings when deciding what the park would be like, waited a year for it to get built, and was astonished after learning they went with a smaller design at the last second, but somehow the park still cost $150,000. To the people questioning the price tag, from what us locals learned, most of the money supposedly went to building the disk golf course, was supposed to help add a paved walking trail (more than whats shown, and evidently still hasnt been built), and was also supposed to be used to build dog park in the same area. The disk golf course was made but nothing else.. we've talked to parks n rec workers out there and they think the city pocketed the money. As for the cracks, yes it's concerning that the park is already seeing such cracks and craters in the pavement after having only been built and in operation for the last 3ish years, but regardless the locals and myself absolutely love the park for what it is. It's very fun, flows well, and is fantastic for our small group of regulars to sesh together on summer evenings. I appreciate you reading the comments on the facebook page and doing research. You can actually see my comments on the page comment section on your video showing pictures of what i came up with as an addition for the park that the locals and I tried proposing to the city and spohn ranch to add. I'm really glad to see a video showing off and promoting the skatepark, and very happy to see you shredding and enjoying it yourself. Thats definitely the best tricks EVER landed there to date 😂 I can see my wax job on the side of the quarter where I'd do kick turn tailslides lol. I think the best trick ive landed at that park has to be nose grinding the sloped ledge of the gap, into a nollie big spin off!

The issue isn’t that they aren’t happy with it it’s that they fought so hard for a park and compared ti what’s they wanted to get (a park that will allow skaters to have everything they need) they got this wich is pretty much a slab of pavement with 4 spots enough for maybe 5-10 skaters max not an entire community of skaters

My city has been declining skateparks in the area for 25 years. So the community created their own park in an abandoned tennis court on the edge of the city with homemade ramps and rails. Around this time last year the city tore it down and banned us from skating there. The outrage finally caused the city to accept the skatepark proposal. It’s supposed to be done this fall!

Skatepark advocacy is hard work. Kudos to the skaters who got this park built. Bigger picture- you have to understand that many, many Texas communities spent well over $150k and ended up with prefabricated metal ramps laid out on an old tennis court. Those skateparks quickly fell apart and town leaders were hesitant to go down that route again. This Commerce park looks well done in concrete with flush bottom edges to the slab. If I were on the Tony Hawk Foundation grant committee, I'd have donated $5k for this in a heartbeat. Will last a long time and provides descent variety.

I definitely feel the battle for the park on this one. My city has almost the same exact scenario where petitions and conversation started around 2013 to build a new park since our only tiny old one hasnt been touched since the 90s. The city wont listen at meetings and us dedicated skaters dont have enough money or signatures to create one ourselves so were stuck in limbo. Was nice to see a mostly happy ending in this video in a situation like this though!

I like little parks like this, they usually have the best ledges and trails, and they are rarely busy. However, they always default to the 4ft quarter which is great for dropping in on for speed to hit another obstacle but not good for most people to learn new tricks on. A foot shorter makes a huge difference when you're trying to learn blunt to fakie lol 😆
