Hello Everyone, Thank you for checking out the video and my channel! I noticed the volume being low after upload. This has been corrected for future videos. I appreciate all the support that has been sent!
Great video! 👍 The extra detail about the guides, equipment & diagrams showing where everyone was on the mountain were great... makes it so much easier to follow along & provides some all-important context that's often missing from these types of short-form videos. Bravo 👏
I was flying my drone at a Thailand mountaintop temple. I saw 2 Thais drive up on bicycles and run up the 325 stair steps twice. When they got to the top the second time we chatted about the drone. They told me they were training because they were going to ride from Anchorage to Denali. I asked them if they knew grizzly bears can run 55 KPH the look they exchanged let me know they had not considered the possibility they might meet a high speed bear.
The trick isn't getting to the top. The trick is getting to the top and getting back down in one piece. I've read that the second part kills more climbers than the first.
The descent is definitely more dangerous than the ascent! It must be hard to be cognizant of the descent though when the summit is so close...I can only imagine.
Love the presentation of this content. Lots of UA-cam videos on this, but your presentation is much better. Fun fact: Denali (old Mt. McKinley) is the highest peak to climb in the world base to summit.
Mans will to survive has no limits! A fact Sullivan can attest to! His survival is miraculous and Steheli getting down that as fast as he did in the shape he was in plus leaving Sullivan his parka shows how much he wanted these guys to survive! Excellent story!
@soft_cardigan Vid's objectively way quieter than most vids on youtube. I can hear it ok with my volume cranked up but telling people to get better hearing aids isn't a great way to respond to there objectively being something about OP's audio settings that make the vid so much quieter than the average volume lol
Unfortunately with most of the high skilled professionals, great experience also brings over-confidence. When the fear factor is reduced, that's when rookie mistakes tend to happen.
I wonder if the fact they reached the summit still matters to these guys. Like, I just was told the story and I can barely remember the fact they successfully reached the summit. I kind of wonder if they still think it was worth it.
They would have to be extremely self-centered, unaware and inconsiderate to still think it was worth it after having multiple people lose extremities to the weather and also having people die.
I have now watched a few of your videos and I really like them, especially over the other three I've watched with the same type of content. You explain words that I wouldn't understand otherwise. You also use feet, Fahrenheit, etc., so I know what you're talking about. And honestly, the other channels often don't, which annoys me. Although this sounds bad, thank you for catering to someone who isn't able to keep stopping to look up Celsius and meters due to ADD, my attention span is low, and your videos catering to my needs makes me want to gobble up all your content!!
I used to think why they wouldn't set up some permanent bases at those heights. But now I know it's simply not viable. These peaks are extremely different from popular ski resorts, even the tallest.

I don't know how you fault Stahaeli in this, I guess as senior guide, he's responsible, but if Sullivan doesn't trip, none of this happens. Either way, it's a miracle he survived.
I've seen a few instances of people getting their gators snagged. I wonder why there isnt like a patch of leather or something unsnaggable on the inside of each gator.
@@Jeff-jl2xc not my point at all. If animals are more intelligent than humans (as suggested) they should be able to do the most menial of tasks. So for you, I’ll say don’t see many animals working at base camp. On their own volition. Better?
Sad story. But I don't understand why waiting at Denali Pass. Autobahn isn't that dangerous if the boot track is still visible, which should be since there is no mentioning of heavy precipitation.
Essentially I'd say you are correct. 17,200' to Denali Pass "historically" has been dangerous mostly to those using ski poles instead of an ice ax. One slip and no good ability to self-arrest may have them sliding down a long way. Yes, some have died there. Precip OR hard blowing snow could really obscure seeing the established route, + exhaustion, + fear (with group all split up) etc.
I suspect there was very little evidence of their trek up, especially early May when they would have been among the first to attempt the summit. The Autobahn is notoriously icy (it gets its name from a group of German climbers that fell to their deaths in the 1980's or 90's). It's hard to know whether he had the skills to traverse the Autobahn alone, but it is heartbreaking that he stopped there within sight of high camp. That being said, I agree that Denali Pass was probably the worst possible place to wait on the entire route above high camp. Even when the rest of the mountain is calm, the wind can be screaming there.
Watching that climber hop over the crevasse looked dangerous as hell! WATCHING someone do that gives me anxiety. I can't imagine actually doing it myself. Ever. 😄 But Mount McKinley is quite beautiful.
But, hey, it was all worth it to stand atop the mountain? Right? RIGHT? Of course not. I find these stories interesting, but these guys are all insane. If there's not enough danger or sense of accomplishment in your life, become a firefighter. At least then your accomplishments will really mean something.
I agree. If a person I is truly living their life according to God's design, in this day and age, there are enough challenges. Keeping ourselves and family out of the everyday drama in this society is enough for me. I don't even think that we should seek out those highs - that we have a right to take chances with our life.
You are far more likely to die doing virtually anything else, people die everyday and aren't pushing any boundary's or thrill seeking just run of the mill accidents. Me personally I would rather intelligently push my own physical limits for the freedoms that it affords and not dwell on the specific fact that I can die doing it. I mountaineer, rock climb, scuba dive, motorcycle, surf, raft, hike, mountain bike, basketball, and you can die doing all of them but the statistics say that I will be more likely to die driving to go do one of those activities. All of those pursuits make up a major component to happiness in life and all of them have given me so much that getting hurt or the possibility that I could die doing them is worth the risk given that we are all going to die. Everybody lives their lives differently but me personally don't think I have any right to tell someone what they should or shouldn't do based on my own comfort level.
Okay, maybe I'm stupid, but I've listened to hundreds of these mountaineering videos but never knew that mountains could have GLACIERS? That's fucking wild. Also, I understand it can be easy to forget things but you would think they would pack the night before and triple check it so this wouldn't happen.
Top tip, don't go up horrendous peaks lashed by freezing storms. Take up another hobby like running, cycling or maybe juggling? Anyhoo, much less chance of dying and putting other people's lives at risk with those hobbies. No need to thank me, cheers.

"They were expecting harsh winds later in the day" 1:25. These climbers decided to go for the summit with bad weather coming in. No effort should have been made to rescue them while the weather was still dangerous. They made the decision and they should live or die based on it.
