Another Gain stage process we use at our studios is to normalise all tracks to -3Db, the in Cubase use your pre-gain section and bring everything down to -15 to -20 db and then everything is equal with loads of headroom for post-production, plugins etc, it also give you a lot of room to push audio into a plugin by increasing the pre gain level, and then reduce levels within the plugins themselves if need be, also another good tip is to use the Pre section in cubase to put a 50-60HZ filter on every track and do it up front. the entire pre section of Cubase is amazing for gain staging. master out with at least 6-10 db headroom for mastering. Also you can do some great peak control by using compressors both upward and downwards and can save you a heck of a lot of time.

When using loud samples from the contend I would prefer to use pre gain as first step to reduce the peak level to -12 or -18 instead of drawing into the wave form. This will give me head room for further processing. Then I can work on details like peaks and manipulate the signal where I want to.

There 2 different types of gainstaging and you will get different results from each.
1st method is PEAK gain-staging. You are basically gain-staging using peaks, but this method isn't gonna create balance because a bass has low peaks but has more power and density in a mix than a hi-hat which peaks higher but is weaker in perceived loudness than a bass.
This PEAK method stops sounds clipping.
2nd method is gain-staging using RMS or LUFS. You gainstage each sound according to its average power. This method creates a much more balanced truer mix, because all sounds are aligned according to there perceived loudness not there peaks.
If you gainstage a kick with a snare according to there peak, they will not sound balanced, if you gainstage them according there RMS or LUFS, they will sound balanced.

Hi Kom, you can switch from Equalizer set display or channel strip set display by pressing the name above the EQ. There is a button for setting in the top left side of the EQ that looks like a wheel, if you press it you can change the display from sliders to button. You can turn on anything that is missing that you can't see. Let me know if that is what your missing ?.. alan

I've got the same problem. In Cubase LE AI Elements 13, the pre-gain knob is missing. I've followed your tips but I can't find anything to turn on or off. Do I need another version? Or an extra gain plugin or something? Thanks very much!@@alandaviddaly

@loraynarosnyr987 hi, press the e button on one of your channels . When the channel/Equalizer window opens up. You can click on where it says Equalizer and it will go from the channel strip to the Equalizer window. You should see the Equalizer screen. Just below where it says Equalizer to the right a little bit there are two buttons one is reset button the other one is Equalizer sitting( it looks like a Cog wheel) .press on it and a drop window will open. Now click and turn on Show Controls as knobs. And now they will all turn to knobs from sliders. Now double click (fast) where it says Pre gain/0.0dB under the button with your mouse right click. And a little blue box will appear on the knob, now type in -12 and press enter. Let me know if you get it . Alan
Maybe its not on the new cubase 13 elemenst, it was on 12 and 11. Leave it with me as there has to be some way to set pre gain on it. I ask about and get back to you in abit.. no worries , well find a way to do it, there are other ways. Alan
There is pre gain in 13 elements...it's the gain rectangle at the base of the PRE section right above the PHASE...if you double click on it, you can type in the db you want. 👍
When I try this it won’t allow me, I get a please zoom in to.. something message. I have to zoom so far in it’s just a squiggly line
Hi Bl4478, see if I can help you... Run the Arrow Pointer slowly over the end of the Track ,on the line where it meets the next track, and the arrow pointer will turn to a = key. Now hold down the right click on your mouse, and pull down to enlarge the track as big as you want. Now move over th the midi event/ sample . Change from a Arrow key to the Draw Tool and move it to the edge of the midi event, hold down the right mouse button and you should be able to pull the line down as seen at 6.02 in the video.
