  • What do you get when UW-Madison science and Wisconsin tradition meet at a local restaurant? A supper club that is both a culinary delight and a social scene. From relish trays to meats and fish fry, to old fashions, this program takes a look at the elements that make these establishments so special. This program is a co-production of Wisconsin Public Television and University Communications at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

I’m 43 and I remember going to a supper club in Crivitz, WI as a fancy treat with my grandparents back in the day. I had unlimited Shirley Temples and little pickles from the tray in the middle of the table. We always had broasted chicken. It brings back some good memories for sure.

With that definition every restaurant from the late 50s and before was a supper club. There used to not be chain restaurants anywhere- a local just built and opened a restaurant for the community.

This sounds just lovely. I hope these establishments survived Covid. The closest thing we have to it in North Texas is a steakhouse called Dunstons.

Still far but if you are ever near Austin there is a good one called RR12. It's in Wimberley.

Supper clubs also have a racist past in which trade unions such as the Firemen’s brotherhood used such events in their organizations to exclude ethnics and minorities from their “supper club”. EEOC brought me here
