I vote release. Partially out of spite for the mysterious probably evil planetside hacker group that probably needs Keen because he's a medical officer, but mostly because we need him.
    1. Using Ms. Whistle as an example was a bad idea, we all saw that Rot, she committed an act of murder and did a job that could be EASILY replaced. Ostracized because of her actions and so she could be with her husband.
    2. Relying on students to take up the position of medical personnel would be an excellent way to ensure that people with life-threatening illness, tumors, things that need careful surgery and specialists to ensure survival, die. Dr. Keen may really hate the idea of setting a precedent, but I ought to point out that precedent doesn't matter with the ROT system, who got terminated for a crime once could have a prisoner freed one day. The citizens of Concretta know full well, as older cycle members likely remember prior ROT's where an individual who used to deal drugs... for example, might have been Ostracized for such crimes, while we Released one not too long ago.
Last thing, I think we really need to have a Q&A system implemented at some point, so citizens can ask Officer Medina questions about the station at large without someone's LIFE hanging in the balance, because we will likely want some info on who just hacked the ROT broadcast, and would really like not asking the question when it does not apply to the ROT at hand.
I understand the Call to ROT has been coming in more and more often, but if there is any time between broadcasts that could be used for the betterment of Concretta, I put it forward as a suggestion.

Because they say so? I'm starting to think our questions might have severe impact on the amount of information we get, and this story could have different endings depending on what we learn and who we side with. I think we should use our questions carefully and really consider when we're handed an opportunity to gleam more information. We know this foreign agent has means of communicating to us, maybe we need to expend a question or keep an ear out for an opportunity to talk to them again and see if they can make their case why we should trust them and not Concretta.

Command aside, I don't want people to feel like they can get away with committing terrorism, and I don't want to give the perpetrator EXACTLY what he wanted. While I'm not super jazzed about releasing someone who decompression-ed people to death, Concretta needs a specialist doctor! Diseases and health conditions aren't just going to politely wait 2 years until we get another specialist. In a way this ensures that Dr. Keen repays his debt to society. Ensuring that the ship stays healthy until someone else is ready to take over.
Also, did anyone else see thay glitch happen? Think it said to ostracize Keen? Weird it would ask us to ostracize him and not terminate ... you guys don't think there really is some society down there? I mean... I'd imagine they'd need a doctor after a while ...

As established in the Whistle case, ostracization is essentially a protracted form of death anyway; and as he said himself, when taken in the round, he and Whistle committed the same crime, so should they not have the same punishment in turn?

While Whistle and Keen did commit the same kind of crime (although Dr. Keen's victim count is much higher), what differs is the motive and the attitude of the accused. Whistle's motive was a selfish one, and from the evidence we got her judgment was flawed, her anger was misguided, and her victim was innocent - plus she asked to be released because she believed she was justified. Dr. Keen uncovered a massive ethics violation that has far-reaching implications and in order to prevent this from happening any longer, he weighed his options and made a choice that he acknowledges should result in his death. Vigilante justice shouldn't be encouraged, but if literally every other medical specialist was part of it, then who could he reliably report it to? He was put into a terrible situation. As Keen said, if a higher up was behind the experiments, then reporting the lab would have resulted in nothing, and if it one of his peers was to blame then the problem has been removed. I believe the ends do justify the means in this particular case. Circumstances surrounding the case matter! I vote for release!

Clearly they want him alive and on the planet for some reason, and we don't fully know why. It could be that they just need a doctor down there, or it could be something more malicious. That "Concretta Had Its Chance" message really says that they aren't open to the idea of peaceful co-existence, and Keen might be pushed to aiding in whatever plot they have cooking if we ostracize him, since we'll not only be going against his wishes, but also forcing him onto the planet, possibly leaving him embittered and in a position to help this "FIT" group, as shown in the message. If we ostracize, we not only lose potentially vital medical knowledge, but also possibly aid a splinter faction in weakening if not outright destroying Concretta.

It would be an absolute waste for him to be terminated as much as he feels like he deserves it. The world or in this case, the ship, needs more people that care about humanity which it clearly does not. Enough to have an experimental wing. I feel there is a sector on the planet that would better appreciate his skills. If Concretta doesn't want him, he definitely can find other people to help.

But then I was like "But if we don't get wrapped up in whatever this is, there's no story." So uhhhh despite the moral dilemma, I am going to vote Ostracize because it seems to be where the plot wants us to go, and I wanna know what the plot is. However, I also would probably have gone for Ostracize even if there was no message. Releasing not only doesn't seem right given the severity of the crime, but I don't trust Keen to be able to carry out any of his duties properly given the mental state he's in. But I also am kind of making it a goal to never vote "terminate" unless I really think it's extremely needed to prevent further harm...or proceed with the story. I don't really believe in the capital punishment in general, and folks don't have to agree with me, but this is a case where Keen doesn't seem like he would reoffend, so I don't see the point in killing him beyond the fact that he requested it. And hey, it's a punishment. If he asked to be terminated, would giving him what he wants be a punishment? Nah. O is my final answer.)
(Also OOC: sidebar, WHY IS ELIAS TRUE STILL THE MOST ICONIC CHARACTER IN THE SERIES FULLY TWO ARCS AFTER HIS VERDICT? THANK you for animating an entire freaking cameo of him just to sass off. As much as it would hurt to set a bad precedent it might help the community more to release Dr. Keen.

I feel like the doctor is missing the larger context to this. He didn't do this out of petty or unjust reason. The people he got rid of would have been taken to ROT and immediately been terminated anyway. That's only if they weren't being protected by someone higher up as well.
Keen did his job, excised disease from the colony, and he shouldn't be terminated or ostracized for it.
I certainly don't trust the signal personally. There might be problems with the colony, but the signal could be from the planet and group made exclusively of those who have been ostracized, so they wouldn't have good intentions for those that voted for them.

Ostracize, not out of morality but more due to a morbid curiosity as to what happens if we do give in to...whatever is contacting us. I'm also fascinated by the "Concretta had it's chance" thing. While you could argue that the point is to literally kill the citizens of Concretta by getting rid of their one doctor, I also like to entertain the idea that they're some kind of revolutionary organization, perhaps one made by the rejected residents of the mining planet. In this case I'd say they admire the doctor for his sense of "justice" and seek to recruit him to their cause. Now as for the cause itself, I don't know their ideology but I think it's not hard to say that Concretta's society does have structural evils in it's organization. Release if you want to play it safe, but I'm fascinated by what a true upheaval to this system could mean.

    This is a tough choice.
If someone higher up was really involved in said lab, then there is no certainty that something wouldn't happen to the doctor if released as an act of vengeance or said person finding a way to coerce him into starting another unethical laboratory.
But there are no other trained medical specialists and that seriously jeopardizes the safety of the ship.
If we're being fair, Ostracizing is the punishment given last time for someone who has a personal vendetta rather than feeling a moral obligation to stop something that going through normal channels might've proven fruitless.
Termination is what he desires, but that also shows he does have some sense of justice or conscience about what happened.
All things considered, Ostracize. Maybe he can be of help to whatever society is Planetside and will be beyond the reach of anyone who might've been behind the lab.

I vote terminate. Reasoning: It is unlikely that he didn't know about the lab, since he is the top head of medical, and given its scale. He might have actually been the one to set it up, since he had the most means available to him to do so. The most likely explanation as to what happened is that he got into some kind of disagreement with one or more of his peers and they threatened to expose him. So he blew up the lab with everyone in it who had inside knowledge, thus ensuring anyone else who knew about it would be killed and blown into space, leaving him as the only one with the knowledge of its existence. His "terminate me" statements show just how manipulative he is. If he was true to his word, he would just tell people to judge him accordingly and leave it up to each person voting to make their own judgement. By telling people to terminate him and reasoning that it's the most "just" thing to do, he sways opinion to having people vote for him to live. Even if none of the above is true, then he did judge many people and execute them himself. So, vote is for termination.

From a story angle, on Concretta there could be a moral trust in the promise that they don't repurpose human remains for material, even if it would be pragmatic. I imagine it's a bit like the fact that (speaking as an American) some Americans prioritize our right to guns so much that any suggestion of regulation on it makes them go apesh*t because some old document promised our right to guns and so it's the principle of the matter than the guns need not be taken away, even if it would be better if we didn't have so many damn guns everywhere that are so easy to access. In a similar vein the promise to not repurpose human remains could be similarly sacrosanct and a line the people of Concretta trust their government not to cross lest there be severe backlash.

Dr. Keen's actions may have been well intended but that is no excuse for the murder of his fellow Medical staff and the endangerment of countless others aboard Concretta. If Keen was unaware of this lab until recently it would stand that at least a few of the people he killed were also unaware and therefore innocent of any unjust experimentation.
While his expertise will be sorely missed I do not feel it would be wise to return him to his position on the ship. If some of our suspicions are correct about a larger conspiracy then we cannot risk having those who ordered the prior experimentation coercing Dr. Keen into continuing these abhorrent actions.
For these reasons I am voting to Ostracize, and I would highly encourage the rest of you to do the same.

The first two were fairly easy Release votes for me but this one was a real head scratcher. Ultimately I cannot trust him to continue to serve as the head of medical, even under strict supervision. How can he reconcile trusting station security so little that he would not report these obvious crimes and turn instead to murder yet would also trust security to give him a fair trial? His morals are inconsistent.
I voted to Ostracise because consigning someone to an uncertain fate is still better than the death penalty. The FIT broadcast made me consider voting to Terminate considering how little I trust that lot. But realistically the harm Keen could do to the station from the surface is realistically very little.

_Someone_ has a plan, and that plan clearly requires him alive _and_ off the Concretta.
If he _knows_ who "Someone" is and knows (or thinks he knows) what their plan is and doesn't want to cooperate, and/or is genuine about his moral conviction that a murderous terrorist shouldn't be allowed to live based on his social status or utility to the community, and truly believes that the way the Concretta operates is best for all (at least given current severe resource shortages) I'd say that adds up.
Termination means his guilty conscience is appeased, his faith in the Concretta, its systems, and its people is restored, and "Someone" doesn't get to deny the Concretta the benefit of highly-trained medical personnel for two years _while also_ having a highly-trained doctor squirreled away out of communication with the Concretta.

  • @commanderjason7786
    @commanderjason7786 21 годину тому

So, this a tricky decision, but I'm going to have to go for Release. This might seem ill-advised, but let's review what we know (fair warning, this is a *LARGE* read):
    1) The FIT Message- (Reposted from a point made to another commenter) Given the tone of the message, I'm betting it's possibly a society of people who were ostracized in previous ROT trials, like a lot of people are suggesting.
    2) Keen's position as the remaining medical professional- Ironically, thanks to Keen's own actions, Concretta only has one medical professional ready to act. Keen *has* stated that his students are or at least will be ready soon enough to assist in the now immediate need for medical care on the Concretta, but this is still an *opinion.* They may be talented, but they are still new to the field, and as such do not have the experience to operate in an emergency capacity. Keen may be one man, but he's still the only true doctor left on the station, and due to circumstances (admittedly caused by his own actions) is needed to prevent a possible medical emergency in the Concretta's future. If an outbreak or other severe medical event occurs, even more lives may be lost without experienced medical professionals. Despite the loss of life he has already caused, even more may be lost in his absence, at least until the current batch of students have been proven in the field.
    3) Keen's sentence- This is the most difficult part to account for. If Keen truly is worried about setting a precedence for future ROT sentences in light of Whistle's ostracizing, then let me be clear on my stance of releasing him: this is not about pity. I'm under the personal belief that if he is to be released that he will work off his debt to Concretta's society by continuing to train future medical personnel while under close surveillance. He won't be killed, but he won't go un-punished either. He will be obligated by both his oath and his sentencing to train future personnel for the good of Concretta, thus fulfilling the need for both his punishment AND Concretta's future medical staff. And besides, the Whistle sentence was under different circumstances. Whistle killed someone not because of a moral obligation to shut down a potentially immoral/illegal science branch, but because of her personal vendetta against Officer Termins. Even if Termins *did* slant the narrative, that does not give anyone the right to kill in revenge/cold blood. What Keen did certainly doesn't give him legality to kill multiple personnel, but his circumstances *were* different. He did what he did because of a potentially illegal and immoral practice on board, while Whistle was clearly not mentally well. I have to stress that YES, he did get several medical staff killed and damaged the Concretta, and he SHOULD have contacted the appropriate personnel to look into the situation, but given the possible corruption on the Concretta AND the influence of possible splinter factions such as this "FIT" seemingly operating from the planet's surface, who is to say he would have gotten the opportunity to do so before someone found out he knew? Again, this doesn't excuse the lives lost from his actions, but it does emphasize that what Whistle and Keen did were different from each other, and applying the exact same logic to both doesn't fully line up. Keen did what he did to prevent disgusting malpractice in medical, Whistle acted in the heat of passion and wanted revenge.
Honestly, this one is a difficult decision to make. I even had to re-review Whistle's case just to be sure I didn't misinterpret things from memory, but I believe releasing Keen under close supervision to train new personnel is the best course of action, both to prevent a medical catastrophe from occurring, and to prevent this "FIT" from enacting permanent harm to the Concretta.
