This whole scene is so elegant at conveying such a lovely truth about women, without really coming out and saying it. Fun Fact: Although his character isn't named, at one point in the original script, HE DID. "Garth Volbeck." It was intended for him to have a fully formed character with a backstory, and connection to our lead. He was meant to be an old best friend of Bueller back in middle school, who tried to help the product of a banner year at the old Bender family. Eventually dropping out and... winding up here at the station. Garth's family were the ones who are being shown the house by Ferris's mom and later on, the family's "Volbeck" name is labeled on the tow truck pulling Rooney's car.
    And yet with ALL of that ripped straight out of the finished movie, his small presence is one of the most recalled parts of the movie.

  • @callmedorian
    @callmedorian 4 роки тому +383

    There is a significance to this character: his name is Garth Volbeck, he knew Ferris in 8th grade, and he had a difficult home life. Because of this, Ferris tried to help him out, but he ended up dropping out of school. This explains much more to Ferris' character. He failed to help out Garth, so he wanted to help Cameron as well, who also had a difficult home life.

      What is there some sort of script Bible for ferris buellers day off?

    • @American-Zero
      @American-Zero 2 роки тому +16

      I can see why he tried to help Cameron. He like Garth had a bad homelife and he was worried Cameron would end up the same way. Cameron was abused verbally by his father for years and was too scared to stand up to him..so Ferris on his final day of skipping school wanted to give him a day of fun so he can be happy. And in his own way he did help Cameron..after his Dad's prized Ferrari got trashed, he saw it as a sign that it's finally time to stand up to his old man.

    • @brynne77
      @brynne77 2 роки тому +2

      @@American-Zero But he also basically bullied Cameron into going with Ferris on Ferris' 'day off'. In fact, it wasn't really a 'day off'.. he was supposed to be in school, but decided to call in sick so he could go goof off that day. If I remember, Cameron had been very sick, but Ferris goaded, bullied him into joining Ferris. He was basically a real jerk to Cameron. He should have left Cameron alone so he could rest and get well. And if he'd never gone with his obnoxious friend, he never would have driven his father's 'prized' car so all that trouble would never have happened with the car in the first place.

    The thing I love about this scene is that we don't just see Jeanie grow as a character but we get to experience a little catharsis on her behalf as well. Her whole life up to this point seemed to be nothing but playing catch-up with Ferris and for the first time, she not only gets a little satisfaction for herself but she also gets to experience the wonderful feeling of being the central character in her _own_ story.
    It's actually a really good example of female empowerment in cinema that wasn't being played purely for gratuitous purposes.

      First time I heard her say that,my guess as to why she was nicknamed Shawna was because Shawna could ultimately be a "synonym name" for Jean. Shawna is the feminine form of Shawn(or Sean), which is the Irish form of John,and Jean is one of those feminine forms of John,like Jane and Joan. Hence why Shawna and Jean could well be one and the same name.

    Now this is great film making. It's such a cool moment in a movie about one big cool moment- successfully ditching school. This little 4 and a half minute capsule is so good... The dialogue, Charlie Sheen, the kiss, the moment when she says her name and the music in the back repeats it... Such a sweet little aside to the main story made you realize Ferris' sister was just a teenage girl.

      You'd be surprised what people are made of. Back in the 90s I used to know a guy who dealt ecstasy out of a club - you'd think from that description that this guy was an absolute thug, but he could read people like a book and he was nothing if not good-natured. He seemed to instantly know what you were thinking and empathize with you perfectly in such a way that you'd feel uplifted every time you spoke to him. The guy had a knack for making people feel better and he knew it.
      I don't know what happened to him but I do know that he changed a lot of people's lives for the better without even trying. It's weird how sometimes, bad people have a little bit of good in them and good people have a little bit of bad in them.

      @@CopiousDoinksLLC no I'm not saying bc someone does drugs they cant be smart or great at reading other people. I think the movie was being funny by " subverting our expectations " i hate saying that now bc of that director of one of the disney star wars said that about one of the films. Anyway it's funny how he is in their for drugs u think hes this criminal but he is very perceptive & talking to her like a calm psychiatrist. To me the gag Is if he is so good at giving advice ( which it is great advice for people who spend so much time focusing on others or even try to get others in trouble it winds up backfiring on them so everyone would be better off focusing on their own life instead of others & they will be much happier. Once she obviously took that advice she starts making out w/ him & she is instantly a lot happier. I did not get why if her name is jeanie why guys call her a totally different Name like Seanna. Like it would make sense if it was a nickname like princess or something. That's like me saying I'm natalie but people call me joanna. I get the part where he doesnt see himself as other guys lol & calls her by her real name. I wonder if they ever see eachother again lol. It's funny when she says " let's not ruin this with a lot of talk "

Repeats until it's done the best.after each take they fix the hair and retouch the makeup etc. So the hair isn't going to look the same each shot. Like above comment ,they took the best shots and merged them together as if it was done 1 time.

      I used to think it's also her way of trying to "put the big trouble she's in" at bay,the way she delays obeying her mom to "get out of there." The mom is great right after, all like "Jeanie,now means NOW! Not five minutes later!" "Okay,coming! Danke schoen,darling,Danke Schoen!" as she waltzes out of there and Garth(Charlie Sheen) gives her a Same-to-you-Jean-you-take-care look.

    Charlie Sheen um dos atores que admiro demais... Apesar de tudo ele só faz mal pra ele mesmo... Um grande cara
