    Citizen was founded in 1918 and to celebrate its 100th anniversary the Japanese manufacturer unveils 3 limited edition watches named after its new Caliber 0100. Based on Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology, this new movement delivers an impressive precision of +/- 1 second per year, making it the most accurate quartz wristwatch ever created. And while we don’t usually cover quartz watches on MONOCHROME, this new development is clearly pushing quartz into new territories.
    For this reason, we talked to Norio Takeuchi, Managing Director of Citizen, in order to understand how it has been possible to create a watch that can display the time with less than 1-second deviation per year.

    Without temperature control, there's a limit to how consistent a crystal oscillator can be. Also, aging of components can affect accuracy over time. I wonder how this movement will fare long term.

    • @oes2546
      @oes2546 5 років тому +1

      My run of the mill Eco-Drive e168 runs about +3s/year on wrist and +30s/year in room temperature. Which shows that, at least for ordinary quartz, the specifications are «very conservative» 😄
      With the extreme frequency of the cal0100, and the excelent calibration and temperature compensation they use on it, I'm guessing it can run within spec for a long time. But any instrument will have some drift over time.
      I wonder if this movement can be regulated like the GS 9F.

    • @Monochrome-watches
      @Monochrome-watches  5 років тому +15

      Well, true and false, as in the case of the G-Shock, it isn't the watch itself and its regulator that are precise... Without a connection, it wouldn't be as accurate. Citizen, like mechanical watches, is intrinsically precise, without any external intervention.

    • @eus9
      @eus9 5 років тому +4

      @@Monochrome-watches interesting point, and somewhat philosophical. To an extent, it's a discussion on the subject of essentialism and mereology. The same point could be made about a mechanical hand-wound or automatic watch: can we state they are not intrinsically accurate because they need winding?

    • @Monochrome-watches
      @Monochrome-watches  5 років тому +4

      @@eus9 Indeed... Interesting and very philosophical debate. Precision is, in fact, a utopia. We can't create anything that is 100% precise. Even an atomic clock tends to go as close as possible to precision, but with a (small) margin of error. As for mechanical watches, they can't be precise, for the reason you point, and for the fact that a human is setting the time... Long story short, precision is relative. Still, what Citizen has done here is truly impressive! Thanks for your comments!

      @Jakkree Nethikul - Why then do we pay millions of dollars for vintage mechanical pieces that completely fail to keep time compared to today's mechanicals? Why are you so biased against Quartz technology? It's about appreciating the effort, skill and craftsmanship prevalent at the time. If we followed your logic then we would tell time from a $10 smartphone made in China. I swear I don't get what goes on in people's heads sometimes.

      I have nothing against quartz technology, heck I even had a few myself(eg.Seiko GPS Astron) but truth be told these are for enjoyment and excite but likely not really collectible. I don't have gut to spend a lot of $ for this piece and then a decade later they end up worth 100$ when those day Citizen decide to put these then-high end but turn outmoded movement in their cheaper pieces just like Seiko did. (forgive my horrible English please)
