This mod would be terrific for a new playthrough with a Dunmer refugee arriving penniless in Skyrim and having to live in the Grey Quarter. He could use the rooftops to sneak around the city at night stealing what he could to survive. If you combined it with the Pitfighter mod, the character could take his chances trying to make a living as a pitfighter, and then maybe moving on to the Thieves Guild or the Dark Brotherhood. I love it when a new mod raises all kinds of new possibilities for playthroughs!
“ I’m devastated” lol I love your reaction, although personally I love starter homes like that cause it always feels weird to me when multiple level estates are just given to your character for free. In order to not break my immersion I usually don’t move into “ freebie” houses until I kill the dragon outside of Whiterun and I’m buddies with the Jarl, I kinda head cannon they give me an Estate since I’m thane now.
Thank you for the tour, Feb. It was fun exploring "with" you! I have played through Capital Windhelm Expansion and really enjoyed the changes it makes to the city, especially the bridge and docks, but I wholeheartedly agree about the player home. Still, I felt like the little sidequests added and the details added to the city made up for it. One of my favorite city overhauls!
I am so glad you posted this mod. Just this morning I woke up and said to myself - "Self what I need is a way to get even MORE lost in Windhelm". My prayers have been answered with creativity, story line and some humour to boot. I imagine a guard down in the street yelling up at the rooftops - "OY! You lot! Leave Off! By the authority of the Jarl you are requested to cease and desist your lofty hamerin' and nailin' as the Jarl has been getting complaints from the fancy toffs that these shining examples of creative carpentry are making their privies less private. They 'ave made it known that your budget conscious urban renewal project is coming dangerously close to their upper level windows where your arboreal ambulations might cause you to inadvertently glance at a toff in their au naturel habitat, as it were. In addition, the good merchants wot is down at the docks has asked me to convey their alarm and displeasure that someone, as yet unnamed, has nicked every packing crate and loose barrel stave from the wharf side (some examples of which I do spy within these artistic and eclectic structures I am currently observing from my secure ground level vantage point)." The guard withdraws to a chorus of jeers and a moldy sweet roll tossed from the creaking shadows above.
@@FebrithDarkstar Yes I suppose I could make that claim though time, energy, the need to make a "real" living and a finely honed talent for procrastination have prevented me from doing too much damage.
Goodness, that was a tiny home in the city. Although at least smaller homes are easier to keep clean. Not that one has to ever really do that in Skyrim of course. And that bakery certainly seemed like a charming place as well. But the new exploratory options on the roofs and even just all around make this quite interesting as well :)
There's a mod called Windhelm Expansion, Grey Quarter that's compatible with this one and increases the size of the Grey Quarter and I think even adds another player home :)
I am waiting for thesmartbluecat to complete version 3 of Inigo and then I will load this mod for a new playthrough (for the umpteenth time), with some other newer mods to enjoy for the first time. Thank you Feb for helping us discover so many new adventures!
I was curious when the scroll said "not to have high expectations". But, it kinda fits in with living a a poorer part of town. Must admit, the noble bed seems a little out of place. Perhaps, a common bed would suit better? Am looking forward to exploring the new town. :)
Seems like a very nice mod, I have the JK's Windhelm, its not as big as this but I like it. This one is very pretty, makes Windhelm look very nice. I to like Windhelm, it's a nice city after you oust the Stormcloaks of course. That player home is just dismal , then again that note did warn you.
Thanks for the walkthrough! I’m curious, could you make a “best of” video regarding these city overhauls? Maybe you can start with best overhauls for the big cities like windhelm and solitude, then tier 2 cities like morthal, and then finally the smaller cities? The opinion of Febrith Darkstar carries a lot of weight. You are like the Michelin guide for Skyrim!
Lol bless you:) And oooh *sucks air in through teeth* - I'm still working through a whole bunch of them, I don't feel like I've seen enough of them yet though I've got my favourites. I tend to install them mainly when I do new playthroughs so I avoid as many conflicts as possible. So I'm not saying "no" - just not yet:)
The City overhaul is epic, the player home is spartan...but immersive. Feb have you viewed Legendary Cities - TES Arena - Skyrim Frontier Fortress mod on the nexus by Jabr, it may be an idea for a showcase or two as it's added ten locations to the game, npc's but no player houses.
Legendary Cities is a personal favourite, can't play without it anymore! The towns are lore friendly, fit very well with the surroundings and even have added quests! Just a heads up, one of the added towns (Pagran Village) is incompatible with the Great Village of Mixwater Mill mod, I learned that the hard way haha
I'd love to see this for Riften. Give us a bit of an upgrade to the Ratway. Let the docks have a bit more of a point. See a touch more going on in the market center. I can dream.
Looks amazing great place to wander and get lost in. Wonder if Sokkvabekk's Hjerim works okay with it, really liked that house pity it was removed from xbox.
Love it if youre bored before next playthrough just for fun try CAN mod, crimes against nature,10 or 11 new playable characters, like an ikea head and hunam a flesh robot with a kitty pilot for a head its hilarious
Great to see your review of this overhaul. Sorry for your new apartment...never knew slums were so spendy. Lol. I have downloaded it and have started a new game. Got to it last night but seriously I'm having all sorts of trouble, maybe have to mess with load order a bit. I'm gutted Windhelm is my jam. 😥 Looks great though. As for the arena, i hear that it is compatible with the Pitfighter mod. Also there is a version of this mod to go with the "cutting floor room" mod. I wonder do you think BalRuhn or Verttrim would be compatible with this expansion? Anyway thanks again & watch your step, could be slippery. ❄
@@FebrithDarkstar I forgot to mention, we got a few inches of snow where I live last night as well! Temperatures here around minus six, going up to around five degrees C. during the day. Rain expected this weekend, with more snow next week.
This is a very cool mod! About the guy in the bookstore who was ‘squatting’ there,,, I read somewhere that Bethesda originally wanted to put a squatter inside Breezehome, where you either had to kill him or be stuck with him in the house, 😬. I am glad they decided against it…☺️🌈💜

There is a mod that adds a quest in DragonBorn where people are trying to restart slavery in Morrowind. I think you can either join them or help to free everyone!! Also I *highly* recommend Lucien, he’ll get in well with Inigo and he’ll add to your game. Get him early to for the best reaction to you becoming dragonborn. Besides Inigo screaming lol 😅😆
Oh no. Inigo needs a refresher, didn't he graduate from the Lydia school of following? Nothing a little Fus Ro Dah won't cure but of course you then have to finish alone. haha Have you ever played the Carved Brink mod? It is strange but has some interesting stuff, might be something new for a playthru. This is an impressive mod. Thanks
I have and I really loved it - especially that dear little home it gives you in the Abandoned Grotto - ooh and the leather armour looks fab on a Khajiit! :)
The "home" is very basic, what I call a crash and cook. Since it is relatively clean and utterly free of dead bodies and murderous crime scenes I will gladly take this over Hjerim ANY day! Hang out in the Grey Quarter with all my Dunmer mates, have pint at the Corner Club, maybe Ambarys will hire us for our bardic talents... we could even ask Niranye or Suvaris Atherton out on a date
I know this is an old comment, but in case anyone reads it, I used this mod in my last playthrough. I love so many things about it...except it crashing/freezing if I fast traveled there half the time :( Also one of the quests is bugged. The atmosphere is gorgeous, I wish it wouldn't crash so much. For the record the only other windhelm mods I had installed was restoring arentino residence (which would not work without console command interference) and emberbrand cellar...which was the perfect home for this city.
A small attic room. Actually, I like it. One doesn't start out as a Big Bad Hero, after all. A place to sleep, and store gear-- This is not bad! Why should I have to wait to be a Thane before getting a place to lay my head?
Well it certainly isnt BlueSkyHall from the Whiterun Capital Expansion (which recently got updated to 1.4 ), but it also costs just a fraction of it... But i dont care, i dont like Windhelm much anyways and would rather fix up the Aretino Residence ( www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/30447 ) Or live outside in Routa or Eastmarch Manor, depending on the Space i need or how posh i want to appear.^^ That beeing said, the rest of the Mod is quite nice, dunno if i'd use it tho, JK's Skyrim for beautification is enuff for non home city's for me. ;) Thanks anyways Feb, as always. :)
Aaah well if you want posh there's always Winterview outside the city - that one's gorgeous! And thanks for reminding me about the Aretino Residence, I think Wayne told me about that one ages ago and I forgot about it!
Awww sounds like you've got a conflict with something nearby maybe? That's what just happened to me with Chanterelle and Songbird's Hideaway - it was a nuisance to find the culprit!
