I sold most of my game collection in 2017 and used part of the proceeds to get Everdrives and other solutions for playing digital copies of games on original hardware. Kept all of my systems, just sold the physical media. I don't regret it. I keep a curated collection of modern games. If I just own something to own it, rather than intending to play it I'll get rid of it.

Great video! You first got me into the MiSTer. Thankful for that. Huge money saver. Quick question . Have you ever tried pc emulators that are trying to be cycle accurate? Like the higan, Mesen or the Exodus? I'm thinking about getting a Smach Z or one of the GPD mini pcs. I'm not sure if I'll be able to handle software emulation again. But I don't hear anything about those emulators.

Not selling yet.. but a few days I just realized that it was enough of spending money. Im just a few games of having 100 Nintendo switch games and I don't even have the time to play them. Also I love to waste money on collectibles and...they are just sitting there. So I just gonna stop and buy a few games every couple months.

I decided to get rid of games I would not play. No one cares about my collection except my little brother and nephews. Lol and we love gaming together and separately but I’m trying to stick with games I’ll actually keep playing or would like to come back to, so I hold onto it. But it can be tough. Getting the clutter out has helped me be more satisfied with what I do purchase.

I went through something similar with my vinyl record collection. I was packing my records to move to a new house when I realized that I had not actually listened to them in years. I decided it was selfish to keep them locked up when someone else could be enjoying them. So I went ahead and sold them all. I've had a little mild regret, but mostly I am fine with my decision. My suggestion to you is that if you are still enjoying your games (even if it is just to look at them), keep them. If not, then share, give, or sell them to someone who will enjoy them.

When I left my country and moved abroad, I had to sell everything. All my books, comics, all my games, action figures, posters. Everything.
It was hard while I was doing it, due to separation anxiety and a sense of loss. But this disconnection was short lived, and I now live a happy life with a LOT less than before. I emulate, I have a PC and 2 last gen consoles, and I love digital games and media.
Life is made out of circumstances, and we never should feel bad for doing the things we need to do, for us or for our families. I'm sure you'll find yourself in a better spot quite soon.

I agree, but it depends on the game. Some emulators emulate a game to where it's almost indistinguishable from the original, while some games just look and play like ass in comparison.

Collecting video games can be very expensive and take up a lot of space. A friend wanted to start buying a lot of Super Nintendo games because those were his favorite games as a kid. Not to collect them but to play them. I told him there was a way to get to play all the SNES games he wanted and not to have to pay a cent to get them and not have to store them. Download a SNES emulator and download ROMs of the games. He did it and said I saved him thousands of dollars. Plus I said no matter how many SNES carts of Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World he buys it is nothing new but exactly the same old game he remembers. I told him there are ROM hacks of these classics that hackers change the games and you can play new different versions of the games. There are fan retranslations of Chrono Trigger closer to the Japanese Super Famicom version and new versions where you can save Schala and one with a completely new area added. A completely playable 1999. I told him there are ROM hacks, at least a dozen of them, that are completely new versions of Super Mario World. The best reason not to get into buying a lot of original carts is you can play the games for free on ROM hacks on your computer with an emulator. I have told a lot of my friends the advantages of ROM hacks and they sold all their video games to get the cash and free up the space. All the Super Nintendo games you ever wanted on one little thumb drive AND completely new versions of old favorites. .

Great video with a great perspective. About 6 months ago I sold my Playstation OG, Nintendo Game Cube, Dreamcast and Saturn and their games. I felt like I had them just to have. Most of my playing these days is on NES and SNES classic, Retrocade and PSOne classic. That thing is a little monster of an emulator. With all that, and the fact that I'm getting older, I just feel the emulators are good enough. I have a Switch as well and that's not leaving my collection anytime soon. Love that damn thing. I used to be heavy into collecting movies and toys/comic books as well. It just seems to get to a point where you can't keep up. You start to ask yourself, "am I gonna just be endlessly collecting? When will I have time to enjoy it all?" You look at those movies on your shelf and say , as great as they may be, how many times will I watch them? Yeah, I think we all have have come to this point from time to time.

This is a really relevant video to make - have often thought lately about my own game collection, which has been extremely trimmed back in the past 5 years to just PSX, PS2, GameCube, GBA, PSP - with the rise of emulators, do you really need the physical copy? Probably not, certainly not to the factor that it takes up multiple rooms. I think we all need to pick out what we love best, and what is the best method to play it without taking up multiple rooms to house that hardware!

I had the same issue, from the time I was a kid to an adult I collected games and consoles. At one point in my life I wanted to own most major consoles, but the issues with that is, you end up buying a ton of games to go along with that console.
Later I got into emulation after high school, however, I could only play arcade games, old 16 bit/ 8 bit consoles and 90's PC games on my old Pentium 3 at the time.
In college I got a better PC and finally I got into emulating PS1, Sega 32X, N64, etc... By doing this caused me to slow down in purchasing physical games because I didn't have a lot of room to store new games for the 15 consoles I owned, plus it was more convenient to play these games on the PC.
Fast forward to today and I now buy my games digitally and sometimes physically, however, with my digital collection I have over 700 games on different platforms and they don't take up space (well except on my hard drives).

This guy is hitting on all the aspects of game collecting that I kinda take issue with. Here’s how I would break it down: if you spend more time obtaining video gamers than you do playing them, what your doing is closer to being a clothes horse than a fashionable dresser. You’re an acquire of things. It becomes more pure avarice. I found the moment I stopped trying to “build my collection” and just focused on playing the games I own or get digitally, my enjoyment of the actually hobby went up substantially.
And most people who have massive collections, they could not buy another game in their entire life and they would still have enough games to keep them busy for the rest of their years. I know that’s where I’m at. I’ve even slowed up on buying modern games because my backlog, retro and new, is so massive that I’m just wasting money buying new games day one.

I ran into the dilemma as you a while back Ron...and I feel it, believe me! Problem is I have boxes full of xbox 360 games that I'd be lucky to get $50 total for, so my question is/was "do I bite the bullet and hang onto them?". It literally seems a crime to get ripped off by parting with them for such a small amount of $.

I’ve been there. Sold my collection twice. First time I was broke and could barely afford to pay rent. Got about 150 for everything. This was back in 2011 and the retro gaming crazy was barely getting started. I always regretted it and told myself “one day I’m gonna rebuild my collection better than ever”. Around 2015 I started again. I started with a Sega Genesis and Sega Dreamcast and went from there. My collection was never big by any means, I only ever had NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, and about 20 games for each system. This time however I did have a famicom, famicom disk system and super famicom.
Anywho, I did what I said I was gonna do...I not only built my collection back to where it was, but it built it better. I played the stuff for a bit. Even got me a CRT television just to add to the nostalgia. But then...prices got way too high, scalpers and hoarders were annoying, I had discovered raspberry Pi and retropie at this point and had a cheap, compact way to play any retro game I ever wanted. Eventually, the games just sat on the shelf and collected dust. It was months since I had played any of them. I made a decision....time to get out and sell this stuff to people who will get more use out of it than I am currently and turn a profit before the market crashes. This time I made about 800 bucks, and to this day, unlike last time, I do not regret it. I did what I said I was going to do, I rebuilt my collection, I proved it to myself...and that was all I needed.

I had a large Star Wars collection that I sold off about 2/3 of around 3 years ago now. I had lost my job and was driving for Lyft while I was tying to find work. It turns out I drove for Lyft for close to 3 years. I couldn't find work in my field and I decided I needed to make something happen. I enrolled in an adult training program were I received training in cnc. As a result I couldn't invest the time I had devoted to driving before. So I started selling off my collection. It was something that I was always planning to do eventually but I wasn't going to do it that soon. But I did what I had to do. It helped pay the bills. I guess I was lucky in a way that I could do that but it wasn't my intention to part with it that way, I always figured that I would have it well into the future and sell it off when I'm old so I would have a chunk of change to do what ever I wanted with. That's the part that sucks. I sold some really great figures that I'll never get back because of prices going up and I've seen some of them on line sell for a lot more than at the time I was selling mine. Oh well. However as I said I was lucky. And in a way I think it's good to clean out your life sometimes.

That's why I now largely game on PC, and use emulators on PC, starting all the way back in 2006.

Think of it another way its an investment and if you hadn't have bought all the games and consoles you wouldnt have been in the position to fix your car and have the option to soften the blow by selling off some of your collection. Its almost like investing in gold or silver. Its a tangible investment.

Do what you have to do my friend. I've been there before, having to sell something i loved, to pay for more important things. I remember having to sell my 82 camaro about a decade ago, a car that i had a custom black and silver paint job on, a 383 stroker engine that cost me $4000 at the time, custom leather interior, etc. The car was very nice, and i was just in love with that thing. Then, the housing crisis hit. And since my brothers and I are in the custom cabinet business, without homes being sold, no need for cabinets to go in said homes. It didn't take long for our business to hit rock bottom. I ended up selling the car, for the cost of the engine. I damn near cried when i sold it. since i probably invested 11 or 12 grand in it easy. But bills had to be paid, and food put on the table. i don't regret the decision, because providing for the family was more important than a car that, in essence, i didn't really need. Thank for the video, and explaining your situation. Best of luck to you, and do what's best for you and your family.

I love this video. I recently decided to be done with collecting for the most part. With my retropie, all the mini consoles, snes and nes classic, neo geo mini, c64 mini, PlayStation classic and more on the way like the genesis mini and turbografx mini all these ways to play retro games, I decided continuing to buy retro games just doesnt makes sense for me anymore. I play my PS4 and switch more than anything while most of my retro stuff sits on a shelf. So I recently sold a bunch, only kept what I care about the most and sold what I dont have nostalgia for and have no regrets. Do what you gotta do man.

I get what you are saying man. But as for me, I am a collector and still will be for a couple of years (at least till I’m 60, I’d sell off my entire collection at an old age), it’s a hobby of mine and I have a strong desire to play certain games. Whatever is on my flash card and I get the real thing of, I tend to delete that (unless if it’s a handheld game that has multiplayer that needs a second cartridge, I use a flash card to solve that because I don’t need another copy of that game unless if it’s on a different platform). I still buy a lot of things I desire to this day. No one can judge me for that or anyone for who they choose to be. I am a video game (both physical and download, I mostly download retro games on newer consoles), home media (definitely includes anime as well as many movies and some tv shows but mostly cartoons), book (mostly manga and graphic novels) and a CD collector (thanks to collector’s editions and strong interest in heavy metal music, asides me listening to Spotify). Yes, I do sell off things I don’t need. Like whenever I feel like getting rid of something and replacing it or feeling no longer interested in that thing and selling it. Whatever things I have no interest in buying, I won’t bother. I’m not a hoarder, just hesitant with some things. Yes I’m happy to have those things and I think it’s worth it, I’m just a bit hesitant, it’s hard to explain, not hoarding, that’s all.

This is an awesome video! Thanks for doing it. Would like to see more life stories like this. Gaming today is very expensive. And I am in the process of putting my ps2 collection on to an hdd. Selling it off to afford other games. I gained this collection from yard sales and stuff. From Wii and older you can just sell your valuable games to afford new ones. And archive them to an hdd now. Your only making resellers money now.

I've actually been thinking this exact topic while making my PS classic build this week.
My thoughts are; if these games play properly and look ok on my HD TV, do I still really need the handful of physical PS1 games I own?
Dont know if I would be ready to sell my entire retro game collection yet though 🤔

I think since we had the reintroduction of Retrogaming via Classic systems with HDMI, i think we're always looking at how much we spent on our collection, and how often do we just take it out to play it? We have so many ways to play those games now via different systems and products that we re-think how we really need or want something. If it's easy and small to have one system to do all those things, the clutter really goes down in the house, may feel much better. I mean I do have a collection of DVDs and a few Blurays but really I noticed it not important anymore, since we have Netflix and Hulu. I think only thing that's important to keep is things that may have lot of value long term. What do I mean by important things, such as Mario/Nintendo first party games have more value than third party games, or Disney Animation Films vs generic films that end up in bin boxes at walmart for a cost that could be rented. Just something to think about.

I know what you mean. I’m 49 and do not have any of my old systems with the exception of my original Xbox. It sits in the closet, and my wife has asked numerous times when I am getting rid of it. My answer every time is I’M NOT.. hell I still have that Dance Dance Revolution pad and game for it along with about 30 other games. All my other systems... Nintendo 64 , PS, PS2, PS3,PS4, Xbox 360, Dreamcast, Sega Genesis, 32x, etc are all gone. I think I held onto the original Xbox because I thought it was just badass when it came out. Also, in the later years, I thought I would mod it. Never did. So, it just sits there in the cost. I fired it up last year and it still worked.
Back to the original discussion though. I’ve sold all those other systems for various reasons. A few of the times it was because I needed the money and it was painful selling them at the time.
Gaming is a passion that’s come and gone with me since the days of the Atari 2600 and the Commodore 64.
Sometimes, we have to grow up for a little while and make those “hard” decisions.
You’ve sparked my interest in emulation again though and I’ve got the PlayStation Classic with a few builds from all PS to various retro system systems. Thanks for that!
Anyhow fellow gamers, enjoy your games while you can. Save money, be responsible, and enjoy life. Family first though.

I used to be like this with music. I liked how having a big collection looked and the status of it but realised I was probably only listening to 10-20% of it realitsically and who am I trying to impress at this point? But it takes up so much unnecessary space. I can see both sides, digital is great for conveniance and space saving but although it is grossly over rated by hipsters there is nothing quite like owning a physical copy of something in your hands. It just feels "safer" to me and like I actually owning it. Probably because I'm from the era where physical media was the only option. That being said the actual product is the most important thing. The best thing to do is sell everything you don't play or use routinely, bar rare stuff that is just cool or will be worth more later. You'll make money to buy stuff you will actually use a lot more than the neglected games and you'll be able to focus on the ones you do own more because there will be less of them. Nothing wrong with having a nice smaller collection of things you play and cherish but the hoarding of games is unnecessary. I think obsessive completests and collectors are probably missing something in their lives and using game collecting to fill the void.

Every collector has an excces of stuff they don't need. Sell that it doesn't matter how popular you get or how much money you make if you sell your main collection eventually or a few years down the road you'll not just regret it but if you ever want to replace it you might develop the mentality were you wont want to part with the money because now it's not worth it. I did that and now it's all about emulation which is cool but it's not the same and I cant afford to go ham and just buy most of it back.

I used to have pretty much everything that was out there, but space definitely becomes an issue & lately I've been offloading stuff I'm not overly attached to. It's a vicious cycle, buy new stuff, get rid of some old stuff. You don't have to get rid of everything however.
Good to hear you also had a Neo Geo collection, I used to have an AES & a few games, but after having my fun, I got rid of it all. I guess the nostalgia just wasn't there.
CE's especially are getting out of hand. I was a big CE buyer, but nowadays I'm happy with just the game & a steelbook or a nice box.

Dude, amm... May I suggest something?...
I have the filling you have pass the "hipe" and the hobby meta you had in mind long time a go. I pretty much consider you an OG on games. I'm from 1980, I collect and I have seen this happen a lot with my friends. If you ever get to that point, sell all the games, and keep 3 to 6 of each systems you love. Keep the Consoles and the "ROM cartridges" , I recommend the ones that separates the data in to the analogue chips to get the real deal... so you can keep the experience of the game and release some room space at home. The Sega CD and Sega Saturn games sell them individual on in little combos, cuz those are good sells this days. Get a display rack to put only the consoles there to display and ready to open any time you have the urge of nostalgia. You can always sell most of games in small/medium lots and get more moola. Important games with full art boxes & manual put them in solo sales. This is only a just a suggestion, I mean, If I ever get to that, I'm sure i would keep some games that I can't stop looking for nostalgia or because I never got to had them at the time they came out and I really love them..
Good luck dude! loved your video...

I hear ya, I recently moved and when I was going through my collection of 35+ years, since I was 1! It was annoying to move and pack, so I just got rid of stuff, things of value, I sold, things that nobody cares about, I donated to kids, friends or just to the local used store where all funds go to our Hospital.
I sold my copies of Fire Emblem Fates CE and Catherine CE PS3 and I was surprised to see how much I got for them, over 350 dollars each.
I only kept my favorites mostly.
Like you said, there isn't enough time to play them anymore anyways, you get to a age, you have bigger things to worry about than playing video games.
I had a CRT TV for playing certain games like light gun games still, but I even got rid of that cause it was a huge waste of space at the moment.
I got rid of around 500 square feet worth of stuff. lol
