Unsung - If the Earth Could Sing is a multi-movement environmentally inspired choral work for SSAA choir, percussion, and cello with music by Katerina Gimon and text by Lauren Peat. This work , commissioned by Myriad, centers around the question “if the earth could sing, what would it tell us?”. The environmental crisis has been called the “biggest threat modern humans have ever faced” (United Nations, 2021) and Unsung aims to shed light on its impacts on Canadian landscapes, using choral music as a form of advocacy and a voice for change.
Mountain Range highlights the relationship between climate change and mountain environments of the West Coast. With this release, we acknowledge that Indigenous Peoples have inhabited the land we now call Canada since time immemorial. In doing so, they have developed meaningful relationships with the land, including the mountains. Some examples of these connections include the Squamish People weaving ceremonial blankets with mountain goat wool and the Vuntut Gwich’in People recognizing peaks in the Tetlit Ddhàa (Richardson Mountains) as sacred places for caribou herds' refuge. The impacts of climate change threaten these relationships as well as the maintenance of Indigenous People's cultures by making traditional food sources less available, and harvesting and animal migration patterns less consistent. Collectively, we can slow the impact of climate change and empower Indigenous land stewards by increasing support for Indigenous-led conservation initiatives in (and beyond) mountain environments, and prioritizing long-term research funding support. These activities give weight to diverse ways of knowing and protecting the mountains - an important step toward reconciliation.
