Neat idea with the teepee/twine. I always do my indeterminate tomatoes in pots. I have a 6’ stake for each pot, and I tie one main growing stem to the stake. Once it gets to the top it is close to the end of my growing season anyway, so I chop off the top and force it to focus on ripening the fruit it has already set instead of more growth that’s just going to die in a frost. Works for me up here in the maritime northwest.

I live at 5,000 ft above sea level in Montana. I use 3 8ft T-Posts driven in the ground with nob covers and run electric fence wire across the top. I put bamboo poles in the 6 containers and secure to the wire at the top. I secure the tomato plant to the bamboo pole with rubberized wires.

I've been growing tomatoes in huge pots next to a West facing 6 ft high cedar fence for many years. I train the plants up the fence vertically and then horizontally when they reach the top. In zone 5 the fence and plants can be covered with plastic or floating row cover to extend the season for a few weeks.

I've watched every video you have put out and I am starting my first garden this year so I will be implementing a lot of your techniques. I can't wait for the harvests. I live in zone 9b so I am learning what plants grow here and work best in this area. Who knew there was so much to learn other than plant seed, water it, harvest. Wow. Thank you for all your hard work you put into teaching us.

I have 48 tomatoes in grow bags that are in three rows. I used three t-post, two pieces of conduit and three PVC t's per row to build a rail. Then I hung the strings and attached them with plant ring clips. I wish I could post a pic to show you

I grew my indeterminate cherry tomatoes last year using the cordon method in a fabric pot. My patio is small but I used a hook on the overhang patio above me and just moved the hook over when I needed to. This was my version of the method you use and it worked great! That tomato plant was at least 6 plus feet! I'm going to try this new method this year. So exciting! Thank you!

What I did with mine was to run a stake from the top of one to the top of another one. I had a row of ten felt buckets with a stake running across the top of all the buckets. I was able to get the tomatoes to grow across the top and run string down and in between the buckets. Kinda looked like a trellis. It did the job.

I'm growing in self wicking tubs I made by cutting 55 gallon Barrels in half and putting empty milk jugs or drainage pipe in the bottom for a water reservoir. Only having to water them once every couple weeks so far. When it gets hot in the plants get big I will have to water maybe once a week. Saves water since it doesn't drain out the bottom

I would also suggest once the tomatoe plant reached the top and turning the hook comes into play. Pay attention to the bottom layer of the plant. Some varieties still have leaves below and i recommend paying attention to avoid and disease buildups and pests.

I use the roller hooks hanging on a 9 gauge wire fastened to 2 T-posts. As the vine reaches the top, just roll out more line. I’m on season 3 using the same roller hooks. The line is UV resistant and has held up no problem.

Great video, Brian! I just today got the t-posts for putting in a trellis system over a grid of grow bags with tomatoes and honestly, I had to wrap my brain around your unraveling the hook/twine to gain space as opposed to raising the trellis and unraveling. That will really help me out, thanks for the tip!

I think you are a mind reader. Just received 40 10 gallon grow bags for tomato seedling starts. Will be placing them in a long cattle panel tunnel with 30% shade cloth on the west side of the tunnel. I was just thinking of how to trellis the plants as I'm done with cages from the garden centers (big hassle) AND BANG, you do this video just for me!!LOL Will tie the hay bale twine to 3/4 up the tunnel to the pot with the landscape staple. Should provide near a six foot grow area for 4 varieties 10 plants each.

I'm doing mine in growbags. I just posted my 'tomato army' in the facebook group the other day! I'm actually planning on doing the trellis method with t posts and either going to do conduit, or pvc. Having a fence put around my property in the next 2-3 weeks. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to build my new garden before the fence or not, so this year its growbags. but I'm pretty confident that by the time my tomatoes need to be supported, the fence should be done and they will be able to sit where i put them the rest of the season. I have 20 plants. if I went the bamboo stake route... that would be so many stakes! this way i should be able to do 3 or 4 t posts and save some money to build the garden of my dreams come fall.

I really like your presentations, subscribed! (edit: I just watched your Apr 7th 2020 vid after writing all this :)
Here is a method to try if you have say 3 or 4 tomato pots. It is a blend of post and wire support. The latter being a commercial greenhouse technique. One strong post is required for each plant. When inserted firmly into each tomato pot they should be as tall as you comfortably want to reach to be able to lift the string hook off the support, unwind the hook 1/2 a turn and to slide the hook along while the string is holding up a loaded tomato plant. You place each pot so that each post is approximately 45cm to 60cm apart in a circular arrangement. Lash horizontal poles between the tops of each successive vertical pole to prevent the poles from leaning over when the plant is hanging in between from a wire tied off to each post. Alternatively if your horizontal poles have a means to and can support the heavily laden plant hook you need not string wire between the vertical poles, just hang them from the horizontals. Now the whole purpose of this structure is so that as your tomato plants reach the top of the string at the hook you unwind a half or full turn of string from the hook and move the hooks either clockwise or counter clockwise around the structure. You don't want too tight of a circle or a vine might snap as it goes round and around the three or four posts. Be sure to trim off the lower leaves so that they never touch the ground and potentially rot or get diseased. Also allows for air flow through the vine stems. In a greenhouse I worked at the support wires were at 2.4M and 3M but unless you can safely get up to that height without potentially off your 5th floor balcony I suggested you keep to some height you can reach while firmly standing on the deck!

Going to grow in my Earthboxes. I live next to the open space, so gophers are always an issue. Earthboxes have an optional trellis that goes over the center of the box. For my tomatoes I am not planning to use those. I have 10’ garden stakes that I put PVC Ts on top and run 8’ metal conduit along the tops. I can then start doing the whole “drop and shift” as the plants grow higher. I have a different version of the tomato hooks, (with the little roller), to keep them going all thru the season.

I've done several varieties of tomatoes in large shrub pots (from the recycling dumpster!), cordoned up a single metal rod in the center. By securing a crosspiece of wood, side to side, slightly below the rim, and then placing the rod through a hole drilled in it's center, it is easily held in place with the help of the soil.

I’d like to see the plant in action. Very interesting.

Last year I grew some in 5 gallon buckets. I tied the bottom of the string to an anchor in the bottom third of the bucket (handle of a jug). I tied the top of the string to my pergola and secured the plant along the string with tomato clips. The cherry tomatoes grew quite tall. I did not have hooks, but since I saw your previous video, instead, I knew to leave extra length at the top and just moved it over, tying to a new piece of lattice for extra string to grow on.
I also have one section of my raised bed garden that I built a structure over with hail proof mesh. Over there I just clip the strings wherever it is convenient. My cherry tomatoes in the raised beds outgrew the ones in the self wicking buckets astronomically. I think I will use the buckets for tomatillos this time, and plant my other tomatoes in the ground. But, the difference is the buckets won't be self wicking, they will be irrigated, leaving room for more soil where the water jugs were before.

What is the minimum container depth for Indeterminates? I always thought they had a root structure that can extend 2 ft. or more.

I’ve got most of my toms in grow bags on concrete. I wanted to do Brian’s lower & lean trellis system. I came up with after finding shepherds hook bases at Joanns. I’ll post a photo on the FB group as I can’t include a picture in the UA-cam Comments. I have high hopes!

I’m trying the grow bags for the first time this year. I’m just not able to do a huge garden this year. That’s for the trellis info. I have 2 tomato plants in a 10 gal grow bag. I’m thinking about taking one out. What do you think? Thank Bryan and happy gardening?

I have been gardening for three years now and I use the prune and stake method I get about a 6 foot bamboo stake and just keep tieing them to it. I make sure to prune the chutes or suckers like you call them

I grew 3 different cherry tomatoes in 7 gallon Pots and used tomato cages and then bamboo pole once they out grew the caged.. they got to be almost 8 feet tall. Only challenge I found was that I had to water daily, sometimes twice a day.

I am in Zone 5B (ontario Canada). So I have a shorter growing season.
