I've never heard the first 3 or so minutes in such a compelling organic flow. Simply magnificent.

I was there when I was a high school student! From the beginning my heart was filled with colorful and twinkling sounds. At 4:48 you can see the screen shakes. It was an earthquake! The hall suddenly trembled violently and the chairs of contrabassists creaked, but all the players continued to play as if nothing had happened. Fernand Dufrene's flute was soft and marvelous. Buffeted by the wave of sounds I wished this would never end. After I went home my mother asked me how it was, but I could not say anything. I was totally inarticulate.
According to D. Kern Holoman's book "Charles Munch", this tape was televised in France on Nov 14, 1968, two days after his funeral.

pure magic. that man was a genius. a complete control of the sound and music, master of masters with an uncomparable scent of french spirit. no words left for such a man. he must have had a bit of a devil inside :-)

7:30 - 9:10 ..the magic is there; Fernand Dufrene on his Lois Lot. What projection, what tone! Not from power, but from integrity, build from the bottom up . Not just volume, avoiding the foundation of tone.

Agreed. It's funny how tiny his flute looks in his hands:-)

What can one say? MAGIC! He was dead within two years of this, but not before his last and best Symphonie Fantastique with his new Orchestre de Paris recording by EMI. He also recorded this, as well as Bolero,Rapsodie Espagnole and Pavane. In his last recordings at Salle Wagram. Just Magic!

I was there when Orchetre de Paris was etablitch . I studied flute with Michel Deboost, who was the first soloflautist in this new orchestre. A great conductor with a fantastic orchestre.

I like Franck's D minor by Munch and the BSO. It's an old (1960s) but it is better than the other version I have, even though their hi-fi is better. Munch's conducting made the difference.

Incredible - it's obvious he knows and loves this score backwards. But If I were a benign cultural dictator I would insist it is always performed complete and always with with chorus.

from 14;45 to 14:49 you could see directing every note every temp. lower the speed to .75 and you will see.

My God see his good face how different from tje hysterical negations like some modern conductors or even Toscanini...it is impossible to play well and sweet in Orchestra when tje conductor looks at you like a bad dog...it is so soft and free and Deep true!
