I've just watch this done by Shirley Bassey, Eydie Gorme and Miss Uggams. This is one of those seminal moments in music when composer, musicians and vocalist come together to
create a classic. I'm and old (65 this month) retired sailor turned cowboy. This makes me cry.
Right up there with Judys' "The Man That Got Away" and Sammys' "Mr. Bojangles".
I strongly agree! It’s an incredible moment when a singer and a song meld so well that it’s almost like the vocalist has just come up with the song in that very moment. Judy no Sammy are also both personal favourites of mine who have that incredible talent like Ms Uggams
Turning 65 this month (Sept 2021), and man, did your comments Nail it!!!
So succinctly!
Thanks!!!
😎😎😎
Oh wow Mr. Bojangles by Mr. Davies jr. makes me gulp down a rock almost every time I hear it.
Well you’re 75 now !!!! Hope you’re keeping well!
And Etta James singing At Last!
This is how you sell a song, its all in the presentation. BRAVO
How have I been over 50 years on this planet and never known of Leslie Uggams!!! Madness. How wonderful :D
The reason that you never heard of her is because she never reached superstardom which is a shame because she's so gifted she has kept work since she was a child star she has to be one of the busiest senior performers out there
@@johnfulton4061 Imagine saying Leslie Uggams never reached superstardom because YOU aren't familiar with her work? Madness 😂
@CeliniacForLife I am very familiar with her work my parents were at the Apollo the nite she won amateur night I've seen her on TV on Broadway movies etc she has a fine body of work she's a talented lady still working in her eighties but she's not a household name she's a legend to people like you and me but I can't tell you how many people that when I told them she was in the film American Fiction didn't know who I was talking about until I mentioned Roots I think she is considered a household name older members of the black community a lot of young black people that I know didn't even know she was a singer(again no name recognition when I mention her)they just know her from Empire she never really got the break she deserved she should be much bigger
There is greatness, and then there is Leslie Uggams singing If He Walked Into My Life. I was lucky enough to meet her once and I got her to sign the sheet music to this song.
Only six words are need for this performance, "It just DOESN'T get any better!!!" WOW!!!
Wow... and I love the way she strolled off stage at the end leaving the entire audience in a state of shock.
Words cannot express the absolute GLORY that radiates around Leslie's beautiful vocals. Absolutely astounding! !!!!!!
I remember her on Mitch Miller way back in the early sixties. Tremendous talent from the git-go. Wow, can she belt!
By the way, that's' Jerry Herman at the end of the video, expressing his appreciation for her breathtaking rendition. Can you imagine how it must feel to see and hear something you've created, performed in such a way it takes your breath away?
She’s just magnificent. An absolute inspirational artist who sets a standard for younger artists to emulate not only In how she performs but in how she lives, comports herself and presents herself to the public and lives her life professionally.
Bar none.....The best rendition of this song. You can see it in Jerry faces......he recognized perfection.
Leslie Lives the song as she sings it.
The African-American Liza Minnelli - this is one of Leslie's absolute BEST performances EVER. Love it!!!!
I get chills every single time i hear her sing this! By far the best!
liljeff2008 until today i feel the same lucky us we can share with newcomers good night
I love this beautiful song and Leslie does great work on it.
I'm stunned at how Great this is 🥰
My favorite Jerry Herman song. We will not see his like again.
Mark Schildberg Edye Gormet sings this, and won a Grammy for it, so wonderfully.
This beautiful performance by Miss Uggams, I would like to dedicate to Dame Angela "MAME" Lansbury, a sad day for the Broadway, Film and Television industry. Rest In Peace Miss Lansbury
Pure gold! I met Miss Uggams after one of her performances in "Thoroughly Modern Mille". She was so warm and classy. I complemented her performance in "Millie", and right before she walked away, I said "You know you're amazing because you made Jerry Herman cry when you sang "If He Walked Into My Life" at the Hollywood Bowl!" She smiled a gracious smile and walked away.
When she replaced Patti LuPone, in anything goes, I was in a taxi which pulled up to a stop sign just as she was about to cross the street at Lincoln Center. I rolled down the window, said “have a great show” and she pulled up her sunglasses, winked at me, smiled, and I thought I was going to die. She was so delicious and thoroughly modern Millie.
It is a shame she was a replacement in Millie and Anything Goes. She was far superior to the people she replaced.
She is playing Mame at the Wick Theater in Boca Raton later this year. I think this is the single best performance of any song I have ever heard.
Well let's not get carried away ...
+Michael K., can you come up with better?
i'm with Nick on this.
I agree 100% with you!
Arthur Raphael Yes .. the late great Eyde Gorme' (who won a Grammy for it). She owns this one. But this is a very close second.
Lena Horne,,,Yesterday when I was young
i heard Ms Uggums sing this on TV as a child about 20 0dd years ago.
I NEVER forgot her rendition. Art, performance, MAGIC really can move one enough to last for many many years...a lifetime.
Wonderful
I watched Ms. Uggams do this song in the original "Jerry's Girls" revue in Washington, DC, when it was touring. The arrangement was basically the same, except that she came down a staircase before moving to the piano and wore a gown with a slit in it which allowed her to sit on the piano and cross her legs. At any rate, it is the lovely, mature treatment of this torch song that makes it so remarkable. And the girl can sang: her alto is formidable, her vibrato is stunning, controlled, clear. The finish- from 4:53 on- is, in a word, gorgeous.
Now those are some serious pipes.
Wow amazing, just found the perfect musical audition song!!! This woman is amazing!
Feeling this particularly tonight! Most will have no clue as to why!
OK, this really reflects a past relationship! I gave too much, got little in return. He's gone now, too late for reprimands or such.
A truly great vocalist. She has class and an amazingly powerful voice. This song suits her perfectly
In my humble opinion, the best performance that has ever been done of this song. And she did live.
I agree with you I didn't think anyone could do this song better than Eydie Gorme who won a Grammy for this song but I think Leslie Uggams owns this song now
She has the most beautiful, expressive voice!
Truly a singer's singer!
I remember when I first saw Leslie. It was 1958, and this white boy, just 7 years old, fell so madly in love with her. To this day she still does magic to my poor old sole. She looks and sounds as good as ever.
Leslie Uggams--the Incomparable, the Inimitable!!
If I could give this a 5 star rating I would. What a rush when Ms. Uggams steps off the piano to a well-deserved thunderous ovation. At the Hollywood Bowl, for goodness' sake. She is REGAL.
I've never been a fan of lyric singing or most current musicals, but Miss Leslie could make me a believer..a true maestra..
By far THE BEST version of this song! POWERHOUSE!!
What a gift to have such a magnificent voice as this elegant lady. Thank you Miss Uggams for this wonderful rendition.
When you're this damn good..
Absolutely fantastic version. 2024.,
Leslie Uggams is tops here! This is the best I've ever heard this song sung. She did a fantastic job with the feelings here. Made me weep as well.
Awesome voice, Ms. Uggams is truly an amazing singer. I love her.
This lady has graced the world of music with unrivaled elegance for several generations, and will remain in our hearts forever.
@vbplayer49 Wow that is about 30 years longer than me. I stumbled on to Dame Shirely Bassey just last year. She is so very talented, she just draws you in with the power of her voice. Even at 73 years old she is still going strong, and looks fantastic. Take care!
Leslie understands the emotion Jerry Herman put into this song. It's literally award winning. And she makes sure you understand it. Excellent.
One of the few things I will regret is that I was not at the Hollywood Bowl that night to witness this performance live. Thankfully I
have it in UA-cam to enjoy anytime I want to experience greatness!
STUNNING!!!!!!!!!! WTF?
Wow! I'd almost forgotten what an awesome set of pipes Ms. LU had! I watched her show
so many years ago, and loved her since then. What a TALENT! Wish she'd made more movies...her sensitive portrayals were touching and deeply emotional.
This song is the best example of beauty, intelligence, deep emotions and a lot of truth; it can only be written by a extremely sensitive heart and a strong but warm mind... and it was not 'till Ms Uggams took care of it that the music was heard like the comrelposer have imagined it, like The Theory of Relativity... another genious creation!
STUNNING
SPEECHLESS!!!!......XXX
BRAVO ❤
Don't forget Jerry Herman's role in creating this tune. Who are the great composers to continue this kind of magic? I can't even think of one from the current bunch of songwriters. We reward too much mediocrity today. To much of the everybody's a winner philosophy taking over everything that made the USA so great.
Breathtaking....
ah the sweet memories of my youth. This lovely lady was always a favorite going back to the early 70s.
Extraordinary!!!
Miss Uggams . . . you go girl . . fab performance.
Leslie is so incredibly talented. Such passion and commitment when she sings.
BRAVO!!!
Wow!! What a singer !The real one! What a powerful voice, wonderful vocal tecnique, what astonish stage presence .I didn't know her, marvelous singer. From now on I'm a huge fan of Ms Uggams.thank you so much for share this wonderful performance with all .
Rest in peace Jerry Harman. Thank you for the music.
This still gives me goosebumps! Leslie Uggams will be performing in San Francisco with Bay Area Cabaret on Sunday - November 2, 2014. This will be her first concert in San Francisco in over 25 years! I can't wait!
Thank you BestArtsBroadway for posting this classic from one of my beautiful yesterdays because Leslie Uggams helped make it so. Here's to a real lady with her class and style intact.
So moving and a gorgeous melody!
Amazing performance. Her vibrato is gorgeous
WOW! She is a fantastic performer!
WOW!
I have this DVD and I love this. She is wonderful. I also have Song on the Sand by Davis Gaines. I love them both. She has a very powerful voice. I didn't know at the time I saw this on PBS. Leslie was also in the minseries, Backstairs at the White House. I ordered it from Amazon on DVD. She's not singing in that, but she's great.
Thoroughly moving!!!
Love d her for years. One of the best performances…
very few of today's "singers" could match Leslie's talent.
sang it sitting on the piano. brilliant!
The best.
Awsome performance!!!
Uggums was radiant that night when San Francisco clothier Wilkes Bashford moved his fashionable store to another location, the name of which I can't seem to remember. Anyway, the affair was attnended Mary Martin, Carol Channing, and of course, Uggums. As I stood outside listening, Uggums' voice carried beautiful, and she was in voice, as usual. I loved what I heard even standing outside. I never knew how Bashford's new digs turned out for him. I was later to be stunned to read something, I think, of a bankruptcy for this fabulous clothing icon!
Hallelujah, Leslie.
What an energy !!
This was from an excellent Brilliant musical " Mame" All star cast @ The Winter garden NYc.
My Favorite track.
An amazing song sung by an amazing songstress you wanna talk about not a dry eye in the house when Leslie sings this song she made Jerry Herman (the songwriter) cry when she sang this song at a tribute given for him
About 20 years ago I saw Gladys Knight in Vegas she shared with the audience how Sammy had schooled her and the Pips when they opened for him as a tribute she sang Bojangles while her brother Bubba in Fred Astaire attire did a slow beautiful tap dance under a blue light it was exquisite and yes I cried
BRAVODO PERFECTION
agree wholeheartedly.
magnifica interpretacion en un homenaje a un grande como lo es jerry herman
Perfection...
My fav song
BEYOND!!!!!
Yes!
LESLIEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Wow that was amazing!! A powerhouse vocal. My favorite version is by Eydie Gorme....she had both power and subtlety.
lillas white
Eddie Gorme's version was the best.
Yes I agree. till i heard this version.
This is wonderful, but I prefer Edye Gorme's version.
Both. Great
I have always loved her. so much that I wanted to see a production on HBO of her playing Lena Horne.
From a distance in the early 80s, I saw her enter a fashionable San Francisco men's clothing store owned by fabulous Wilkes Bashford. She smiled at me lightly as she walked by. Outside later, I could hear her singing Angela Lansbury's "If he walked into my life." That was the night, if I remember rightly, that Janet Gaynor, a dear friend of Broadway's Mary Martin, lost her life in an automobile accident.
I ALWAYS FELT ONLY EYDIE GORME WAS THE ONE FOR THIS SONG BUT LESLIE CAN HOLD HER OWN ON THIS ONE ALSO !!!
THOSE DAMN LOOOONG PAAAAAANTS
I love her performanc on this song
Leslie Uggams is fantastic and what a thrill to watch...favorite version is Ann Dee underground GREAT singer on Capitol Records "Free Again" containing killer version of "If He Walked In To My Life" (here on youtube) yet do love this one too!!!
Magnífica!
This is what it looks like when you immerse yourself into a song.
brillante magnifica perfomance
I've never heard this rendition before this evening.. Leslie does it every bit as good as Eydie Gormet.... The emotion is captivating... she feels it.. Eydie, I like this one better, but only slightly..
I met Jerry Herman in Malibu, summer 1976.
WOW
She kind of looks like Shirley Bassey now. She has a beautiful voice like her too 👍
She is THE one.
Jerry Hermann was just overcome with emotion and joy! I though gurlfriend was gonna need a stretcher!
4:35-the end is just sick
