Had that exact motor on my Gheenoe and IPB 14. Great motor, I ran a few 100+ mile trips on it and never had an issue. In the end, I sold it with the IPB 14 but hated to see it go at the same time. The next skiff came with a newer 30hp Suzuki 4-stroke and it ran wonderfully, had electric start, power trim built in and was super quiet. Since I filmed a lot while cruising the lower noise level of the 4 stroke was well worth it. Tomorrow, I'm taking the 30hp off and swapping it with a new Mercury 60hp ;) My thoughts are it's a great motor but noise and trim might sway you towards a newer 4-stroke. I would run it though first and see what kind of speeds you are getting with it as well as how the boat handles the weight back there. That will help you determine if you want to go up in hp and weight with the new one.
Keep it! I have a G3 with a 25hp Yamaha 4 stroke that I ran around the bay. The major downside are top speed and weight carrying ability. The positives are AMAZING fuel economy, easy maintenance, quiet (relatively speaking), VERY light compared to larger outboards. Most 4 cycles are considerably heavier than a comparable 2 cycles anyway. But add on the extra size and you draft deeper, and start adding lots of expense for marginally better gains unless you go big. I'm guessing you'll get 25mph with the right prop. With a 50hp you'll probably get 32-34mph. My suggestion is getting manual trim tabs, lithium battery (save 35lbs) and a micro jackplate with a stainless 3 blade prop. Something like a 10x13. The boat will plane easier, gain a mph or two, have amazing economy and get even shallower. I did exactly this and had four different people with me fishing over a weeks period in the South Padre area. Everyone was blown away by the flexibility and fishability of the boat. By the way, most new 4 cycles that are over 20hp are now fuel injected. This means you probably can't diagnose problems yourself. Unless you get an older model of course. But even a 50hp Yamaha bcan fetch $3-$4k used. Lots of mulah! Tight lines!!!
Keep it Ty! I am sure the J16 would be a great addition to the guide service. We love our center console J16 ,Tohatsu FS 30 My wife and fishing partner found it for sale in Galveston 2 years ago. Power tilt on the motor and Nauticus brand trim tabs seem to give our set up the best balance and control especially in moderate chop where skiffs don’t particularly excel.
When you go to buy a new one bring us along and walk us through your thoughts and picking a new plz? I've been wanting something like that but I was thinking about get a Honda 25.
Personally I think it’s a bit underpowered with a 25hp. I had a j16 but mine had a center console and I ran it with a 50hp and I think that was the sweet spot. It could get squirly and slide from under you if you didn’t slow down on turns, but once you knew how it handled it was a great boat
You guys would be fun neighbors.
right back at ya cuz
