Legend has it that Herman single-handed ripped the wagon wheel off the getaway carriage as the bank robbers were fleeing the scene. He quickly broke the wheel with an epic headbutt and crafted a mallet with the pieces which he then used to smite the evil doers and bring them to justice. I know this to be true! Outstanding video Bruce! Very well done!
Part of me was waiting for you to say "hanging up the mallet for the first time" Kidding, looks great, Bruce! I think your great grand father would feel honored to have his mallet displayed like that, after he said "what? Just use the damn thing."
Thank you! Yeah, I bet he saw a whole lot of change in his lifetime. Can you imagine how he would react to how disposable things are right now? This from the guy who cut up a broken wagon wheel to make a woodworking mallet?
I really like the thought you put into tying the display case to the new mallet you made with the peened brass. There's now a tangible connection from old to new through the case.
Great project , and execution Bruce. Love the dynamic video style. Rebecca does an awesome job shooting for you. Makes my static video shots look so 1980´s. Good job Sir 😀
The brass is just the right amount of contrast against the walnut. The design is so versatile it can be recreated for many things. I was going to do a video on different wood joints not you added another to the mix, thanks man. Oh, btw I researched "The Legend of the Wagon Wheel Mallet" for my wood school thesis paper at The Norm's Abrams University of Woodiology and found a book with the same story as fisher's shop did, guess that confirms it. And who in their right mind would dislike this video? Not Cool, Mr. Thumb down, not Cool!!
I’ve really liked what you’ve been doing adding brass accents to pieces lately, such a neat way to add to a project. Also great job putting together this video, I loved the edit job, it flowed nicely and was fun to watch!
It's hard to know where you're going without knowing where you came from. This is a good way to keep that reminder handy. I also like your use of brass accents and growing and learning as a maker. Great job!
Absolutely beautiful display and what a way to honor the mallet's history! So many nice details and I agree, just the perfect a mount of brass accents!
This display case turned out awesome! The walnut and ambrosia maple gave a really nice contrast! And I like how you tied in the brass like in the mallet you made. It’s cool that you could pay homage to your grandpa with this project and the mallet you made! Great job!
Man I love this! I've got a couple mallets with cool stories. One is the one you made me and the other is my very first mallet. I need to make shadow boxes for both for in the shop!
I really like this project. I especially like how you can still access the mallet. A normal display case with a glass front would not have been appropriate for this display. Thanks for sharing with us.
Super cool, and you are really starting to get the hang of peening. Just out of interest, did the Odie's Oil react with the area of the brand on the back where you sanded to get rid of the extra burn mark?
Thank you! Now that I have the hang of peening, I don’t have another project for it. Ha ha. No, the branding iron was just held on there too long...operator error. ;)

That's exactly how I recall reading about him and how this mallet was born! ha ha. Thanks, Drew!
Look at you making a Shadow Box.. Makes me PROUD!!!
That’s you’re territory, isn’t it?
@@BruceAUlrich It is! You did awesome. I need to try the brass peening detail now!
@@DadItYourselfDIY Brass is pretty inexpensive, and it adds a nice touch.

ha ha...oh man...missed opportunity on my part! I think you're right...he would have liked it, but he would have wondered why I wasn't using it.
Nice! It’s definitely worthy of an awesome case 👌🏼👌🏼
I hope it hangs in this for another 100 years.
Great job Bruce. Man, 1891 to 1971, he sure saw a lot of innovation in that time. Wonderful project and great way to honor your great grandfather.
Thank you! Yeah, I bet he saw a whole lot of change in his lifetime. Can you imagine how he would react to how disposable things are right now? This from the guy who cut up a broken wagon wheel to make a woodworking mallet?
He was ahead of the repurposing game for sure.
I really like the thought you put into tying the display case to the new mallet you made with the peened brass. There's now a tangible connection from old to new through the case.
I was hoping that through line was evident with the brass that was hammered on both. Thanks for grabbing it!

Ha ha. She’s getting really good! I shot some of it on a tripod. The challenge was mixing the two so it looked good and coherent. Thanks!

Great video Bruce, I think it's a wonderful tribute to your great grandfather and brings a good sense of history to the shop👍
Thank you very much! I will definitely like having it in there.
Awesome . Your grandfather would be proud
Thanks so much! I hope he would be!
Great video turned out awesome
Thanks so much!
the new case and the ware and tare of the mallet go together well, nice touch with the brass
I never even thought about the juxtaposition of the new and old really. Good point!
What a great idea to showcase family treasures. Enjoyed the video Bruce.
Thank you very much! It's important to preserve this stuff.
Another great video, Bruce! Love the addition of the brass plaque.
Thanks a ton, Dan! I really like seeing his name up there.

Thanks, Stephen! Yeah, it’s definitely important to look back at history. It helps inform our future. Well, that got deep. ;)
That's such a nice way to showcase that wonderful family heirloom. Hopefully you can pass it down yourself!
I would love to do that! Hopefully, one of my kids will take interest in it and want to own it.
Nice build! Very classy and cool way to display something special. I love the peened brass pins.
That brass is just so classy! Thanks for watching and for the kind words.
Real nice tribute to your Grandad Bruce, excellent job. Regards Jim UK.

Beautiful job. The hammered over brass is a really nice design feature.
Well, thank you! That's very kind!
Love the project and the sentimental side. Great looking walnut too.
Thanks a bunch!
Great job on the video!! What an awesome tribute to your great grandfather!!!👍🏻
Really appreciate that!
Looks great! That engraved tag turned out great too. That's an awesome ability to have!
Appreciate it, Josh! It can really spice up a project.

@@BruceAUlrich Absolutely - and you nailed it!
That's a great looking display, Bruce. Great work. That's a project to be proud of for sure with a great story.
Appreciate it! Thanks for following along with the story. It’s a fun little piece of history.

I really like this project. I especially like how you can still access the mallet. A normal display case with a glass front would not have been appropriate for this display. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks so much, Chris! Yeah, I wanted to be able to grab the mallet. It’ll get a little dusty but that’s ok. ;)
13: 54 love that finish! 🍯
The stuff is awesome!
@@BruceAUlrich I should look for a local source, the lazy source ( Amazon has it for $100 Canadain... )
