Thank goodness I saw your video. My vines were stuck at about 3 feet long. I fertilized them as you suggested, and they took off. Thank you.

Great information especially showing how much to fertilize as I have killed enough plants by giving too much. You have the best information I have seen in a video. Many thanks!

Considering how successful you are in growing muscadines, etc. I believe I can trust you on this. Like you said, I have heard the thing about not fertilizing fruiting plants the first year they are planted. Thanks again for your help. Jesus bless.

Thank you!! Raised on a rice and soybean farm in southern Louisiana, I understand the value of basic and nitrate nourishment for most plants. I had no idea how to apply this to muscadine vines. Thanks again for another great and informative video without advanced terminology and complicated tutorial.

Pay attention to Potassium it is the nutrient that grapes need the most, always add potassium as it does not come back once its gone unless you add it.

I've got two lanes that are super slow growing compared to my 2 Halls. Since I'm in Texas can extend the fertilizer schedule all the way to October? I'd like to push these to Lanes as much as I can. The Halls are already at the end of the wire. One Lane is just now to the top of the wire. thanks and I really appreciate your and Kinfolk Farm videos. Great for a home gardener like me.

We’ve watched your videos and our Muscadines are looking great. Just wondering what product you use to kill grass and weeds in the rows? And when is best to apply? Thanks!

Hi, I’m from Cebu, Philippines and on the fifth month of our grapevine planted it’s around 5ft tall but we have some cuttings that we’ve planted that I thought were dead but now it’s rainy season again(end of May ) wherein we have rain every other day until December, I noticed some cuttings started to have shoots and some which are stunted with 1-2 ft tall started to grow. Can I just follow your fertilization? Out technician gave us an organic way of fertilising and we cannot follow since seaweeds solution were so expensive and burning some weeds or plants like corn as source of potassium will be very laborious on our part. Hope you can advise us. thanks a lot.

Thnx 4 info! Planting 2 grape vines in backyard. Bought a Niagara and a catalba grape plants. I also have some Kiowa Blackberries that are in their second season. I noticed on your pruning/pinching video that there are similar techniques as I have learned for my blackberries.. Ive just been fertilizing with liquid Miracle Grow. To keep things simple, can I use the same fertilizer regiment on both my variety of grapes and my Kiowa Blackberries that you are using in this video?

Last year I planted a grapevine and gave it a little fertilizer, it really did not grow. This year, I poured 12-12-12 and some lawn fertilizer in holes much like tree spikes, the two runners are 6-ft high by clipping off most of the side growth. Have to get the support built asap.. This guy knows what he is talking about and the best advice I have seen on the subject. (I'm growing Concord type table grapes)

Is this recommended for Thompson or any other grapes in their first year?

  • @pointblank1978

I have two plants that I want to put between some large trees. How far apart do they need to be? I might have to put em on the opposite sides of the trees. Is this ok?

    • @stephencarlsbad
      @stephencarlsbad 5 років тому

I'm sure its fine unless they are going to be shaded or the trees roots are going to invade the grapes roots or compete for nutrients which it might.

    Alfalfa

    • @charlesbyrneShowComments4all

Yep. Alfalfa, ground oyster shell and kelp emulsion was the organic substitute for calcium nitrate. Bat Guano, worm compost, and organic vegetable fertilizer was used for the beginning of the month. I also did a single application of Epsom salt diluted in a watering can in July. Instead of 4 oz I did about 6-8oz for each fertilizer until the final month. On the final month I cut the organic fertilizer down to 4oz since it was slow release. So the first year in the ground 2 of 5 (female fry and Darlene) of my vines grew down to each post end. Of the three that didn't make it one female, Supreme, made it down to one post, but the other tendril growth was being attacked by insects (Georgia thumpers and aphids). The self fertile Ison made it 3/4 (reached one post and almost to the other). It had a surge of growth on the side that reached the post, but what I failed to realize because I didn't trim the leaves to 6-8 inches on that side was that it flowered and fruited under the leaves. So I think the berries and not summer pruning the side that reached the post was why it didn't reach the other post and maybe the 4oz instead of the 6-8oz on the final month.
The Cowart was the only one that was a head scratcher. It only made it 3 feet on each side and wasn't vigorous like Ison, Fry, Darlene, and Supeme. It had a healthy fibrous root system and was a 2 year plant like the others when planted and the leaves that grew on it were green and always healthy. It just seemed the slowest. I ordered Paulk(self fertile) this year and I'll plant it just in case the Cowart doesn't grow well or dies. I don't think it will die, but it just doesn't seem as vigorous as the other varieties. Now if only they can get a larger quantity of Ruby Crisp then I'll make room for it somewhere.
If you follow Ison's instructions, use the plant tube the first year and keep grass and weeds from competing with the vines it works and your vines will be healthy. I just chose to go with organic fertilizer and compost because of our sandy soil, rainy weather, leaching and runoff and how it affects our water systems and springs nearby. The balanced fertlizer isn't good for us because we already have high phosphorus soil content.
