  • Hello Folks,
While this episode was filmed before the invasion of Ukraine, I wanted to acknowledge this event here. My wishes for everyone's wellbeing are stronger now more than ever. It can be very difficult to put words to how these types of events effect us, and I think my own response, and sometimes feeling of helplessness, has been more physiological than psychological. For the knitting community, many designers and yarn distributors have committed sales to organizations supporting Ukraine, and I encourage everyone to support financially if you are able. However, it is also important to remember to reach out to and support nearby family, friends, and acquaintances who are especially affected by these acts of violence. These quiet and non-financial acts of support are still meaningful.
Always remember that you may not be able to do all the good that the world needs, but the world needs all of the good that you can do.
I hope in this content you find some comfort.
Wishing you health, safety, and happy knitting.
    Emily

My first pair of socks was knitted from a thrift store knitting project that had been abandoned, bright pink acrylic. I wasn't afraid of making a mistake and I am still proud of that pair of socks. I have made hundreds since. (Using nice yarns!)

Love the tips! I’m a super thrifty person, I hate spending lots of money on things that are just for me. Most of my clothes come from thrift shops, and I find lots of other great things there too. I’ve found lots of yarn for cheap, not really super nice stuff just box store yarns but it’s so cheap and I can feel guilt free about using it. My parents have also found giant grab bags of knitting needles (circulars!) and crochet hooks, which really helped expand my tool collection without me having to go out and buy as many new tools, since buying interchangeables or hook sets were not an option for me to splurge on at the time
Ooh! Forgot to mention the 2 vintage knit and crochet booklets I found! They are so awesome. I love vintage fashion and patterns. The booklets showed how to knit, crochet, and even had a bunch of projects, plenty of them I want to eventually make. I don’t remember if I checked for a print date but I suspect they were from the 60s or 70s. Definitely my favorite fiber-related find

Great subject. I was *gleeful* to score two skeins of Noro for a pretty low price... At a thrift in NM while visiting. So awesome to get to feel and use this fascinating yarn without paying full price!

These are all great points! i also do photography and read a book once where the author limited himself to one single photo per day for 30 days, it was very enlightening and led me to spend 30 days where I only allowed myself to shoot from at least the second story since I have a fear of heights! Applying this to knitting is a really cool idea, especially if you have a stash to knit from, or a thrift store nearby!

What a cool self challenge! I haven’t imposed such a rule on myself yet, but I’m fascinated by the concept!

Hi Emily. I love thrifted/gifted/vintage yarns. It's a fun challenge to figure out how to make something cohesive out of someone else's bits and pieces. I often search Facebook market for yarn ( I too only use Facebook for yarn anymore). I once got 3 hanks of beautiful red wool - worth the price of the entire haul. It's like finding treasure.

I grew up near Greenville, SC! I didn't even know there was a yarn dyer there. These are some great tips, Emily. I will need to look into more thrifting because it seems like such a fun project with high reward!

Almost all of my sweaters have been thrifted and have been in my closet for years. I’ve recently started looking for yarn and knitting notions as well, which is super fun. Excited to check out some other platforms!

I love love thrifting for jeans and skirts... it never really crossed my mind to think about yarn. How fun! side note about Old Soul Fiber co. I knit MJ a sweater out of her yarn in an awesome pink color way called "mellow mermaid." I felt the same way that it was such an interesting color. Well, it turns out she is no longer dying yarn.

Thanks for the tips! I've purchased a lot of yarn on Mercari. Similar to Poshmark.

I think we have to many knitters in my local area as there is very little yarn ever available in the thrift stores.
