Sir, I have a doubt.. Would it be correct to say that Francois Bernier's accounts on Mughal India's economy and society are not completely correct. No doubt there was extreme poverty and extreme richness in the spectrum of society but his perceptions did not portray the actual social reality but instead focussed mainly on portraying India as inferior to Western Europe?
@@rudrakshi_rajput I think most of his writings are correct even though he was doing nothing more than comparing india with the west but as you notice the transition from medieval to modern india the writings of traveller are portraying India as a place of impoverished people, one reason could be the phase of industrial revolution in Europe which maked them advanced as compare to east in the later medieval period. You can observe the writings of Al biruni, marco polo, ibn batuta, samarqandi they all have showed the superiority of India because they arrived in early medieval period when India was actually doing good.
Sir.. I feel there's a contradiction in source 11 and source 13 by Bernier. In source 11, he claimed that most of the land of Mughal empire is barely more than sand and barren mountains. Also, a significant portion from the remaining land is untilled due to lack of labourers. WHEREAS in source 13, he described that the large portion of the land was fertile and contributed majorly to the economic growth of the country
Yes bernier had contradictions in his works.. mainly due to his own biased perspective and his missionary zeal to put down India in every aspect in comparison to Europe

Sir, Was long time investment in the land really not possible in Mughal India? Or it was a false perception of Bernier? Cuz no doubt land was with nobles who didn't hold it permanently. But the land was in turn with big peasants who hired labourers to work on them. Technically, these big peasants could have invested in the land for future output as it was going to pass to their children.. Please explain, Sir.
Nobles never cared for investment as land could be taken from them anytime....big farmers and zamindars never cared because land could not be taken from them... moreover they never worked on their land...it was poor peasants who worked hard so that even after giving a large share of produce to zamindar they may be left with enough for them..
@@rudrakshi_rajput you are talking about mughal India(1526-1709) I don't think so this statement is completely correct, you can read about Akbar's land revenue system by Raja todarmal known as Dahsala system in which there was a uniform system of land measurement based on the yield of land on the basis of past 10 years, there wasn't any concept of landlord/owner but your statement is correct for the policies by later Mughals. Bernier arrived in india during the reign of Shah Jahan so his writings are relevant.
